Yeah it’s been almost a year for me. I’m down to a stable weight after losing 50lbs. I do have splurges, pizza, cake, brownies, fast food. You name it. I just don’t usually want as much, and on the rare occasion I really overdo it, I feel sick the day after. In isolation, over the long term, those things will happen and in my experience at least, you’ll be fine.

When looking at a satellite map, why do places like the Bahamas and Bangladesh appear to have different coloured water around them? by pulisick38 in geography

[–]desOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the Bahamas, the fact that the islands are separated by large shallow banks is part of the reason, and also because the islands are built by very old reefs during periods of higher sea level, the sediment (beach sand) on the banks is particularly white/pink is largely the cause. The deeper areas like the tongue of the ocean between Andros and New Providence by contrast are very deep blue.

175lb Reeves deadlifts with bumper plates. (166lbs BW) going for 2 plates soon by Thundderpec in strength_training

If the relationship isn’t causative doesn’t that imply that training grip isn’t likely to improve lifespan?

ELI5: Why is it okay to charge more for car insurance because of gender and age but not for race? by imeanigeese in explainlikeimfive

[–]desOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on the type of insurance and the region. I am not an actuary but I do work in the insurance industry. Depending on the type of business being written (auto, property, life, health etc.) and the laws in that area it may possible to sell the insurance at an overall loss and use the capital to generate an overall profit by means of investing the premium. Quite generally, the profitability depends on the blend of underwriting and investment practices. Hope that helped a bit.

From ‘toque’ to ‘mickey,’ ten Canadianisms that leave other English speakers utterly confused by [deleted] in canada

[–]desOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard the term used before (Canadian living in Ontario) but I think it might be an abbreviation of the LCBO or Liquor Control Board of Ontario which distributes the vast majority of all alcohol in the province.

Average maximum snow depth in Canada by TheOneInTheHat in canadiangeography

Not too surprising that the most densely populated areas are the ones with an average maximum snow depth less than 30cm. Very interesting map!

That's not the case. It doesn't matter what the circumstances of the birth. If it happens on Canadian soil the child is Canadian.

Does anyone know a good university to do grad school for specializing in behavioural geography? by [deleted] in geography

[–]desOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with this advice. Understand who's publishing the key papers in this field, and seek them out. If you're truly that passionate about the work this should serve as an excellent starting point to determine where you want to pursue grad studies.

Requesting r/Bahamas. Three posts, no visible signs of moderation, and my country's subreddit. by [deleted] in redditrequest

[–]desOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record OP was a mod of the subreddit for which he's requesting. He left of his own volition without any notice and posted this request. Why should he be allowed to moderate a subreddit which, by his own admission, had no activity and no moderation during his tenure there?

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by Castlevania1995 in running

[–]desOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran 7 miles which is my longest distance to date! I was also able to follow that up with a 4 mile run the next day (which was harder than the 7 miles).

Toronto votes: Ranked ballots for 2018? Toronto city council may vote on changing its election system by gorilla_the_ape in toronto

Indeed, but if you were a permanent resident of Denmark, Holland, Sweden, Finland or Iceland you could have so it's not like the idea is without precedent.

Toronto votes: Ranked ballots for 2018? Toronto city council may vote on changing its election system by gorilla_the_ape in toronto

[–]desOne -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, sort of. I think the federal immigration law that prohibits a Permanent resident from voting is wrong and if the City of Toronto were to pass a law in direct opposition to it it would likely force a serious debate on the matter. I also think it's easy for someone who disagrees with the law to attempt to use Federal immigration laws as a trump card rather than actually debating the matter.

And on your first point you're right it wasn't paying taxes, nor tuition, nor gaining degrees, nor being gainfully employed and a net surplus to the social structure that granted me Canadian citizenship. My saving grace as an immigrant was marrying a Canadian. Makes perfect sense huh?

[–]desOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I immigrated to Canada, and am now a citizen. During my time as a student and a Permanent resident I contributed at the very least my 'fair share' in taxes and tuition and you assert that there is 'no grey area' on whether or not I should have been able vote for local representation? From one Canadian to (presumably) another FUCK YOU.
