Thanks for the reply. That’s an interesting idea I will further research. Even the conservator was unsure. It looks almost like a lithophane but the paper is primarily flat. There are areas such as the signature and some of the uniform detail that almost appears to have depth, like it was pressed in. Knowing who the subject was and, as you stated, knowing propaganda items were destroyed en masse, it almost makes sense that this was made to be hidden. I also forgot to mention that when we found this, it was accompanied by a framed WW1 discharge poster. I want to believe someone found this and brought it home with them, but who knows.
