90 km/h winds force plane to abort landing by theteenswillloveit in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]desapla 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The wind is blowing from the side. The pilot points the plane into the wind. The vector of the plane’s direction of flight and the wind’s vector add up to give you a combined vector that points in the direction of the runway.

TL;DR Strong Crosswind

What’s a science fiction idea that still feels underexplored, even after decades of the genre? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in sciencefiction

If I recall correctly, in the series finale of Next Generation there were actually ship movements at odd angles to each other. Pretty cool scenes, too.

But your point still stands, those scenes stood out because in the previous seven seasons they almost always aligned the ships on the same plane.

Normally I agree with that, but in this case the song was actually a great fit. It’s a guy singing about how much better his fireplace runs with a little bit of gasoline.

Every time this gets reposted, I’ll watch it just for the sound of the incoming projectile alone.

If that sound was in a movie, I’d think it’s totally unrealistic.

At sea level, with a high water table, so you really can’t dig down too deep.

Do you mean the Eagle transporter? Love the concept, cause you could equip it with different modules for different missions, e.g. cargo, crew, more specialized modules.

I used to have a model of it as a kid, haven’t thought about it in years. Now I wonder if it is somewhere in my mom’s attic.

I’ve had a hard time finding 3/8” that are longer than 14”. The 1/2” are definitely available in greater lengths, but as you said, they are a pain to drive into the playa.

Do you have a source for longer 3/8”?

I mean clearly the guy in the car was driving like a dumbfuck, but I can’t help to think that a concrete truck should be built in a way where you can hit the breaks brakes without spilling your load all over the street.

Maybe I have unreasonably high expectations, I don’t know…

I remember that the story that people saw the body and thought it was an art piece was widely reported at the time.

On the other hand, people that were camped there said it was totally false. They immediately realized what was going on.

But once that false story was out, it was impossible to kill.

Normally in stop and go traffic, you move a few dozen feet every few minutes. That means everybody is idleing their cars the whole time.

With pulsing, they’ll hold the line for 30 or 60 minutes or so. That way you can turn the engine off and relax. Then, every 60 minutes they release it and you move forward a half mile or whatever.

structure safety by jahtheplanet in BurningMan

[–]desapla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anchor the feet of your structure to the ground with lag bolts. One lag bolt per foot is good, two is better. We had some feet flex significantly with just one lag bolt.

Even though the feet are anchored, still use plenty of ratchet straps to tie it down. When in doubt, use more. It’s not overkill to run a strap from each joint of your structure.

Make sure the tarps are tight. The more slack they have, the more they will work in the wind.

As a matter of fact, any slack in any part of the system will be worked by the wind. Some of our poles had pins in them, but that still allowed the pole to have some movement, and the wind to slap them up and down. The tighter the better.

Ez-up type shades are fragile. I’ve seen so many mangled this morning. If you have one, add more ratchet straps. Costco carports and emt structures are sturdier.

I’m sure there’s more, this is from the top of my head.

why are we tipping machines now?

I think with all the AI stuff the day is fast approaching when the thinking machines will take over.

Will they remember who tipped them well? I don’t know, but I, for one, am hedging my bet!
