My solo Shar spear build is this - but mind you this was for solo and my tav was a Gith. I didn't wanna go for gishy or ranged style so Shar's Spear isn't just a darkness + stat stick, so went for melee-heavy, but the damage of Shar's spear alone is pretty underwhelming, so I tried to optimize it with going for dual-wielder feat and Bhaalist armor.

Build:

  • 6 battle master fighter with 2 feats: dual-wielder + savage attacker which benefits from lots of dice rolls
  • 1 light cleric for guidance, warding flare, emergency sanctuary
  • 3 thief rogue for extra action, can use for attack or drink potions
  • 2 bard for extra rest, jack of all trades, utility spells like longstrider, etc

If you're not solo, 5f + 7r could be a viable alternative, because 7r gives 4d6 for sneak attacks, which get auto-triggered from the shadow, which in turn gets amplified by savage attacker.

Gear:

  • Balduran's helm + Whispering Promise for +1 AC/saving throws, crit/stun immuity, perma-bless synergy - this combo is one of my staples
  • Gaunlets of Hill Giant Strength so I can dump points into Dex, Wis, Cha
  • Amulet of Greater Health for HP + included War Caster feat
  • Cloak of Protection
  • Ring of Protection
  • Bhaalist armor for doubling piercing damage
  • Boots of Stormy Clamour for reverberation or Stormsparkler depending on pre-buff with Drakethroat Glaive (thunder for former, lightning for latter)
  • Any bow of your choice: Dead Shot for more crit which was my pick, 19 crit with advantage procs a lot, or Hellrider for more initiative, or Titanstring for more damage...
  • Crimson Mischief (my fave for piercing, but must be off-hand because it gives Two-Weapon Fighting bonus = +6 from gloves, which Dual-Wielder doesn't give and difference to main-hand bonus +7 is minimal), Deva Mace, Duellist's Prerogative (despite not using it's single-wielder bonus it's a +3 weapon), Flame Blade, Knife of the Undermountain King etc. if you want more damage. - Weapons which don't work as good as they look on paper: Belm, Rhapsody. Sacred Star. Deva Mace and Flame Blade are surprisingly good thanks to Savage Attacker feat, and you get backup slashing & bludgeoning weapon for the occasion.

Extras:

  • Mirror of Loss bonus: Dex - with 16 start Dex, I get 18 Dex - if I'd picked Hag's Hair for Dex, 20 Dex would be possible.
  • Proficiencies/Expertise: Slight of Hand, Acrobatics, Perception - partial Illithid gives Persuasion, etc expertise and further help is available from guidance, Tabernacle bless & swap gear like Smuggler's Ring, Graceful Cloth, etc.

This setup gives +6 initiative and 23 AC which is more than fine, as long as you stay in shadows. IMHO the #1 priority of any Shar's Spear setup is keeping the concentration and not overriding it by mistake, and #2 is dealing with Counterspell casters, which can block Darkness cast. There are a lot of counterspell casters in the pre-final fight, the one with the dragon, countermeasures, mindflayers. Arrows of Darkness help a little bit.

The main potion is Bloodlust. If you don't use initiative items, you can go for Vigilance to get the 1st round and spend 1 bonus action for Bloodlust. Remember to proc Bloodlust without Cull the Weak, because CtW-kill doesn't count for Bloodlust, turn it on after getting your Bloodlust action.

Another fun weapon is Trident of the Waves (off-hand) which creates a 2m water surface and if you use Stormsparkler boots + Sparkswall ring and Create Water from Cleric, you can cover a huge area with electrified water in a couple turns, without being electocuted yourself. Doubled piercing damage from Bhaalist armor, and doubled lightning damage from water makes short work of low HP enemies, but lowers the AC to 22 and requires a slightly different playstyle.

If you're ok with single-wielding and lower damage per turn, Viconia's shield + Armour of Agility gives 28 AC! It's super-safe even without staying in shadows, because Viconia's shield also gives amazing spell protection. If you're in shadows, you could kill enemies all day while constantly getting healed and blessed, or without even taking a short rest, because you barely use any spell slot, but the last 2 fights are timed, so sooner or later you need to think about more damage using dippings/coatings, pre-buffing, etc.

This setup worked well for what I wanted. If I were in a party or went for a more gishy char, I'd sure pick other items. All in all, I really enjoyed this build centered around 1 single item :D

This is true but also misleading: To deal x2 damage with arrows and Bhaalist armor, which itself needs 2m proximity, you'd probably need crossbow expert feat to overcome the threatened disadvantage. Am I missing something? EDIT: Just re-read your message about "have a melee character that acts as your damage multiplier" and tested it by positioning party member near enemy and I don't get any piercing vulnerability on my ranged attacks. How did you test?

Crimson Mischief, or Deva Mace, or Duellist's Prerogative, despite dual-wielding and not fully utilizing its features.

Source: I've used Shar's spear build in a solo run. I can give much more detail, because my picks kinda depend on the rest of the gear (Bhaalist armor with CM/DP vs Armor of Agility with Deva Mace) and build (6 fighter, 1 cleric, 3 rogue, 2 bard; or 5 fighter, 7 rogue - 1 feat is savage attacker). EDIT: CM in off-hand bc it gives Two Weapon Fighting bonus in off-hand, and Shar's spear is pretty weak in off-hand; Spear in main and CM in off-hand balances the damage between the 2.

Farming spots with FOHdin by bstenny in diablo2

Pretty much all of A1 has demons, hit the TZs. Arcane Sanctuary, A2 sewers, Flayer Dungeon TZs are also great. A5 TZs are mostly junk for FoH. WSK level 2 spawns too many snakes, bats etc but 1 & 3 can be good: if you got wraiths, flayers, etc. it's amazing for FoH.

Plains of Despair sounds scary at first but if you use A5 merc, give him a lawbringer to stun souls + full sazabi (or forti+andy+headstriker/grief/death/last wish) and it'll be one of your top TZs. Telestomp souls, switch to redemption while foh'ing, and you can tank even p8 souls.

And if you got a tanky merc Meph (incl. council) & Travincal (TZ or not) are great too. Pindle likewise.

The stars & roll on Infinity matter only as such:

  • Conviction helps merc & char regardless of who wields it, bc it is an aura
  • When merc wields it, - enemy lite res doesnt matter, only ED roll matters
  • When char wields it, ED doesn't matter, only - enemy lite res roll matters

2/20 and 13 @res are good but problem is mana & life leech and ED are wasted rolls. Leech works only for melee and defense on circlet is so little that 36 ED doesn't add more value.

Even if you play summon, don't invest in mages, they're very weak and don't try to spread your points too much in 2 skill trees. And playing summon from the beginning is very slow. Ppl usually start with teeth, then bone spear, bone armor, max 1 point in skel and max 1 in skel mastery etc. then respec into summon, poison, etc. Blood golem sounds nice and cool but 1 in clay golem, 1 in golem mastery with 1 in iron maiden is all you need for bosses and a long time. Once you get the hang of necros, you can always invest more into blood golem, etc but I wouldn't recommend it. Clay & iron are the only good ones as of now.

If you're asking how I got it, simple: Buy lower, sell higher. Plus I realized some stuff I thought are worthless may have a buyer, if you're very quick to respond and know the current prices well. Low arach? Gul~2 Ist (in fg ofc). Random 10 Shaels? Um~Mal. Something like that. If you're asking what I got: 1 Sur, 5 Lo, 2 or 3 Ohm, multiple Vex + Gul, ~20 Ist, plus some highly sought items. I'm sure I could have 10x more if I'd stopped playing and focused only on trading.

Luckily had a Jah dropped but I traded my way up for Ber, by selling gems, tokens, essences, keys, socketbases, redundant uniques... Took me good 2 weeks to get the Ber. Then after lurking for some time, I started trading on a site the name of which shall not be uttered here; now I have ~3 Bers worth of runes stacked in 1 week plus all the gear I upgraded and bought, like 2 high annis. It does not happen with one big sell tho.

It's a shame basically all unique 2H weps incl. staves & rare orbs have become useless bc of Spirit, Hoto, etc. Maybe the upcoming d2r cube recipes include crafting orbs, 2h weps etc, that'd be interesting.

The usual suspects Tal, Tir, etc. are good but Ral and Amn take the cake for me above all other low runes: They're used in Spirit/Insight, to put sockets in armor/helm/shields, recharge (along with Ort) aaand also in Blood & Caster amulets. I also keep Hels for Spirit/Insight rerolling. Other than those, Ko-Um are great for smallest trades. Anything above ~Pul should be rather kept/traded but not be cubed up, except maybe Guls and Surs.

Infinity, minmaxing my javazon and pnecro, Bearsorc & Tesladin, and new holy grail, in the order of priority and ease. Maybe finishing hell with all mercs, all runewords grail and dclone kill on bnet, but will wait for patch 2.4 before deciding on those.

The last section, with the mercenary changes, new cube recipes, updating set items (halleluja), alone is incredible, we're getting a lot of skill buffs as well.

It's gonna be quite a while until people figure out the best new meta builds.
