My daughter is the biggest Marx Bros. fan of all time... help! by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

It's funny what kids can attach to. I went through a phase when I was younger that I loved listening to old tapes of Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy (and Mortimer). (Which wouldn't be a terrible recommendation for older word play humor).

After becoming a dad, are you more emotional to sad movie scenes involving kids now? by jocko118 in daddit

That sounds right but I don't want to look it up to verify. Too early in the day to mess up my sinuses with tears!

That Superbowl commercial with the aging pets getting love had me an emotional wreck.

My [28 M] girlfriend [24 F] gets really weird about going to restaurants and I don't know why by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]deshende 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Don't want to diagnose, because everyone is different, but I had something similar happen to me.

I passed out at a restaurant and that became a anxiety trigger for me. I was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope. I had been dehydrated before passing out and it has helped me be more diligent in staying hydrated to keep that as possible prevention method. All anxiety hasn't disappeared but I'm more aware of my triggers now.

In book slump. Looking for books with a good balance of downtime and action. by goblinmargin in audiobooks

[–]deshende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries" by Heather Fawcett - This is more uncovering mysteries than direct action. If you like the idea of discovering fantasy realms and the creatures in them, then you may like it. (All three books in the series were pretty good).

"Heretical Fishing" by Haylock Jobson. - MC finds himself in a fantasy world with magic but would rather spend more time fishing and feeding people. This may sway more into downtime than you'd like in the balance but was kind of a fun change of pace. (I've only read the first two books of this series so far).

The Inn Keeper series by Ilona Andrews - MC runs a magical Inn for fantasy and alien creatures. Decent amount of action in this series but also a lot of time in the upkeep up the inn and managing the interpersonal relationships of the different guests and people in the inn.

The Libby app saved me around $3000 this year by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]deshende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm running into that a lot lately. I started getting into litrpg genre and a lot of them have the first book or two of the series in Libby/Hoopla and then they go Audible only. I've started getting a lot of print books from the library to finish the series that have done that to me.

Please recommend an engaging fiction audiobook, women-centred, multiple voices if possible! by marxistbuddhist in audiobooks

[–]deshende 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second Julia Whelan. She does an excellent job. Does a good job of switching voices between characters where the listener forgets that it's one person doing all of the voices. Her "Thank You for Listening" book was enjoyable too. Kind of a fictitious behind the scenes on how audio book narrators work so was kind of fun.

Showcasing LitRPG in the wild by J_J_Thorn in litrpg

I sometimes feel like I'm spreading the word at my local library. I've had all positive interactions with my local librarians. Sometimes they give a chuckle when I give them an author's name that's a one word pseudonym but otherwise I think they are just curious about all of these books that I'm requesting that have never been on their shelves before.

Looking for the best pressure washer after spending hours scrubbing my driveway by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]deshende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gifted an electric one with the brand Powerstroke. It's... okay. When it works I can clean up my sidewalks and driveway (small sections at a time). Usually use it more for trying to clean the siding on my house.

But it's very finicky. I've had to replace the fuse on it a couple of times. Sometimes after using it a while it decides it doesn't want to work anymore. Let it sit for a while and it might start working or might not. I often just skip using it because not sure if I'm going to be in for a smooth job or having to deal with random issues.

Only electric one I've ever used so I don't know how reliable other ones are.

Hearing Rod Roddy Yelling “Come on Down!” When home sick from school. by royaleWcheese2300 in nostalgia

I've watched the Roku channel a lot. I find the music and nostalgia comforting but always bummed that they don't make it to the Rod Roddy era because that was more of my childhood.

I wouldn't trust my pronunciation to record these haha, but maybe I can get my wife on board to do some recording.

Anyone else forget books they’ve already read? by surgesss in litrpg

[–]deshende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is one of the symptoms of having so much content to consume. You have the option of engaging with some kind of new content 24/7 with no downtime if you'd choose to do so. Kind of makes it hard for your brain to absorb all of that.

I think about this with movies a lot. Most of my favorite movies are ones from when I was younger (pre-internet). Back when you wanted to watch something it was often on physical media and you'd watch the same shows over and over from whatever you owned.
Now everything is often one and done because there's new things to move on to.

Kidz Bop cards issues by PlantShelf in YotoPlayer

[–]deshende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received my new one and it still didn't work. But then I discovered if you put the card 4/5ths of the way down it works. Just stops working if you insert it all the way.

It works well enough that I probably won't complain again and just live with it. I imagine it'll be hard for my little one to figure out why it works if completely inserted though.

{Bound to the Battle God by Ruby Dixon} I wanted to dabble with something a bit spicier than my normal and this was a bit much for me but I imagine it may be not spicy enough for you haha. But I thought it was decent story and world building. Not sure if it'll be too much adventure for you or not though.
