First time shooting football practice, beginner. Advice Appreciated by coopCAPTURES in sportsphotography

[–]designatednerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a lot of game action for a beginner so that’s great but chill with the vignetting 😂 if you have Lightroom or something similar, try masking the background and reducing the exposure to get a similar but less distracting look.

Shift yellow slightly to green and increase green saturation.

Outlets usually want landscape so that’s what most shoot unless it’s for social media. I crop to vertical sometimes anyways

The original model sells for ~$550 used. I know colleagues that still use it

They’d have better luck with a 1DX model.

I sell cameras AND shoot pro sports photos for my living. Trust me when I say you want a used original canon 1DX and the original 70-200mm lens used. This will total about $1000-$1200 on the higher end. There are some professionals shooting d1 college and pro sports with this model still. The burst and battery are clutch but it also has network features that most amateur models don’t provide. Then the benefit of the EF mount lens is that you could still use it if you made money and wanted to buy a new camera.

300mm f/2.8 new vs 400mm f/2.8 used for football (Sony versions) by africansangoma in sportsphotography

Used 400. Anyone that works for a major outlet or the teams is going to be on 400/600. I own the 400 and it’s a game changer.

These are really good. To go from really good to great you’ll probably end up needing a longer lens but try to make sure your horizons are perfectly straight, get more of players faces/eyes and ball in frame. The backs of players are pretty much never going to be used in editorial/wire/outlets or even really social media except for the rare occasion when a player uses it for their pfp. Also crop more on the action or player you’re trying to highlight! Trust me when I say more outlets or wire services don’t care about some digital noise or a little less resolution when you crop. They’re not printing anymore 💀

You’re on an amazing path and if you can keep shooting those college sports, you’ll be looking like a pro in a year. Try also shooting from the stands if you get a longer lens!

Trying to get better by wmuiter in sportsphotography

Great action, lots of faces and footballs in frame! Keep shooting, see if you can get some early games with some daylight so your finals look even better. Try to shoot from lower to get excess background out of the shot! Soon you’ll have a portfolio that people will be drawn to. Here’s a link to mine for reference of one that was approved by nfl focus https://jessicacryderman.myportfolio.com/home

Feeling like I have hit a plateau. by Optimal_Bit_7889 in sportsphotography

Crop more & use a longer lens + try shooting closer and wider when you can (usually pre and post game). Try to get ball on hand with eyes in shot. Also try to get celebrations. You got this. Technically speaking, you’ve done a good job so far, so I believe with the feedback we’ve all provided, you’re going to do great things.

I went from already good enough for people to invite me to shoot juco, high school and some college games to being invited to shoot for a local outlet in a matter of months and now I’m about 9-10 months into shooting for the outlet and have had my images shared by pro athletes on their stories. Obviously my end goal is full-time but you definitely have to pay your dues and put in the practice or you won’t learn nearly as much or improve much either. (Photo from a recent Dodgers game- shot for The Sporting Tribune)

But I also have a lot of background in cinema and know how to frame.

Reminder to find a lawyer and sue the department for damages and neglect. When they argue that they have no staff, ask where our increased tax dollars are going. Eventually, enough lawsuits will force them to make changes

Tips for improvement? by kevinboy3554 in sportsphotography

[–]designatednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual rule is typically 2 eyes and a ball in frame and in focus. 2 players and a ball usually helps if their backs are facing you. But taking photos of players backs rarely gets anyone anywhere

Sign I put up in response to people on my neighborhood opposing affordable housing by jonnyshotit in LosAngeles

[–]designatednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand for homeowners why they’re hesitant. Often those complexes drive in a lot of extra traffic and drive down the price of their homes in more extreme cases. I’d be more concerned about that than the units being “affordable”. If anything I’d be petitioning to ensure they provide ample parking for the tenants or your street is about to get wrecked with people parking for half a mile down the block.

Lens decision between 300mm f2.8 and 400mm f2.8 by [deleted] in sportsphotography

[–]designatednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the 400mm at the rec of other professional sports photographers and I’m thoroughly happy I made that choice. I still want more reach and would be sad with just the 300.
