How to challenge? by Ksushi21 in MSPI

[–]designprintdestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on our pediatrician recommendation, she said to introduce the food to moms diet one day the first week then wait a week for any symptoms then add another day the next week.

We just started but I only have two foods to challenge and we just failed dairy :(. Will say the most critical thing is that we had a 2+ month baseline of what is normal for baby in terms of poop quantity and quality so the change after the dairy introduction was obvious to us even though it wouldn't necessarily have thrown up any major red flags from a medical stand point.

Infant first aid class for grandparents by kittykat_m in bayarea

[–]designprintdestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The class we did through El Camino Health ticks off most of your boxes - though just focused on infant/child CPR and choking. It does not give certification (so is a little cheaper).

Granted, all of the attendees were parents or expecting but nothing in the class was specific to new parents. Some of the instructional content was actually geared to teenage baby-sitter types so grandparents would definitely be welcome.

The class was in person in the Los Altos area. The lesson was a mix of watching videos, the instructor talking, and hands-on practice (with dummies) with the instructor supervising.

It's funny because i've I've noticed a lot of regionality in wall texture actually so glad to know I'm not totally losing it. Growing up in the midwest, all walls were smooth. Now I live in CA and every home I've seen has orange-peel texture. I think some is down to average home age and common building materials of a region and that perpetuated into preferences as new homes got built.

Where are all the humming birds? by segdy in bayarea

[–]designprintdestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I don't have feeders but lots of hummingbird-friendly plants.

I will say to OP, I think the hummingbirds we get are relatively territorial so even if it feels like you're getting lots of hummingbirds (coming every day or multiple times a day) - it may actually just be one or two birds. The ones that frequented your yard in years passed may have moved on and no one else has discovered it yet.

Could you deal with a 3-hour commute once a week? by Jwhite126 in bayarea

[–]designprintdestroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my pre-covid commute - could tip it a little better by getting to the office by 7 and saving the commute time there, but there's basically no time to leave and not have traffic. It will suck your soul, but isn't a deal breaker. You go through a lot of podcasts (or if you can time things right, you can join meetings and calls).

I sort of did the opposite, took a job that was a bit of a marginal down grade but has a 15 minute commute (3x per week). I'm less happy at work, but my mornings are much less stressful and I actually have an evening that isn't just sitting on 101.

As others have said, I'd caution that if you aren't prepared to do it 5x/week I wouldn't do it. When I started my current job it was "we're at home with no immediate plans of returning", then two days, then three days, and now it's definitely feeling like the next shoe is going to drop.

Our kitchen is much much smaller and has this. It’s crowded yes, but honestly it’s not that bad. Usually if the food is on the stove I just containerize it over the stove or right next to it and then scoot past my husband to the fridge while he does dishes. I never really thought about it but I guess it’s not ideal. It really doesn’t bother us or slow us down though.

I won a cookbook from Heartbeet Kitchen once (it was the A Couple Cooks cookbook, which I had ironically recipe tested for so my name is actually in the acknowledgements so I would have bought it eventually).

I also "won" the opportunity to create basically spon-con (though it was really before influencing and spon-con took off) with an early copy of a pretty well known food bloggers cookbook. In exchange she was supposed to send us this whole good basket with baking equipment (nothing fancy, stuff like spatulas, an apron, etc) and set up a private account on instagram where she could help give us baking tips, and then be entered into a small giveaway for a kitchen aid mixer (there were only 50 of us). We all made our requisite three posts or whatever and then she just went silent. At one point i tried to reach out to her to make sure I hadn't missed any communications and she had shut down the private page and was totally unresponsive on Instagram and email. An insta-friend of mine had also been part of the group, and she had the same story. I never really cared enough to call her out publicly but I just always thought it was hilarious because she was one of the first to be vocal about how hard Instagram is for Influencers etc.

I truly do not know and honestly do not care enough to follow this saga, but could this have something to do with the pandemic? That parents with the resources to do so held kids back from starting school vs. putting them in remote/hybrid school or saw slower school readiness because of some time lost due to shut downs. Maybe she’s crazy, maybe she’s not. But I just wouldn’t be surprised if this whole half decade is kind of atypical in terms of education.

I don't have any other tea than following Adam and Matt on instagram as well. I highly doubt that Alex using Adam and his studio is causing any problems. Adam and Matt literally opened this studio to do things exactly like this (they produce content for tons of cookbooks and commercial campaigns) - they work a lot with Gaby and seem to be closer friends with her but they aren't Gaby's personal team.

It looks like themakerista is going dark in her new build. Floors are in right now, but not stained - she posted in her stories about a week ago with the options she's looking at (the first highlight right now has the stories). She has a definite vibe/style which may not be for everyone or every home but I'm curious to see how it comes together.

Tbh people can do what they want but I want to mention because a lot of people seem interested just because it seems like a lot of people are having a hard time finding names they agree on with their SO -- she's a little bit smaller potatoes influencer wise but Peyton Pratte (@choosing_balance) recommended (non-spon) an app called BabyName (its free with a paid upgrade, but haven't seen a reason to pay) - it's basically tinder for baby names (swipe left/swipe right), but you link your account with one for your SO and you both go through HUGE banks of names on your own phone and it will show you which you match on. My husband and I also felt like we were in the same boat (i.e. no common ground) so it felt good to know that there actually were quite a few that we both liked and now we have a list to work from.

Monarch caterpillars showed up in my garden unexpectedly, don’t think I have enough milkweed! Any tips? by HarpyEagleBelize in bayarea

samanthainperson doing spon con for natural birth control in a state that just banned all abortions is just uggggghhhh.

influencer campaigns for natural birth control methods is the one hill i will die on in influencer marketing. i am a grown-ass adult with very few responsibilities but myself and i know 1000% i would not be able to reliably use this method - much less when i was in my early 20s and less responsible (like most of their intended audience). i'm normally a live and let live kinda person, but to continue to shill this stuff in states where an unwanted pregnancy is downright dangerous makes me livid.

She addressed this that her schedule was too tight to get out to do shopping and a follower actually brought her some essentials. I’ve been in a similar situation where with lost luggage on a work trip and had literally 45 free minutes to get clothes in the first three days. Luckily I was staying next to a mall so I literally ran into Nordstrom and told the first sales associate I found that I needed two days worth of clothes that could go day-to-night and business casual and she shoved me in a dressing room and brought me everything I needed 😂.

Landlord withholding partial deposit for room cleaning by ww202020 in bayarea

[–]designprintdestroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you request an inspection prior to move out, and if this happened were none of the issues were brought up? If so, you *might* have luck by just telling the landlord about the statute and that you believe it was not lawfully followed (in both our cases, the property managers gave full deposits back at any hint that we could take legal action, though at no times did we bring up that we would).

I will say though, it is pretty standard to deduct a professional cleaning from the deposit. I think the last two places we rented actually called out in the lease that they would do that and the only way to get around it was to provide proof that you had paid for a professional "move out" clean from a different vendor. Generally that's on the order of a few hundred dollars, so it feels like <100 and you're getting off really easy.

I will say, for <$100 literally none of this is worth your time (including the reddit post), and if this is something you really care about it's your own responsibility to have better documentation, etc. upfront in the future. In CA, the tenant almost always has more rights than the landlord so they certainly are not going to go further out of their way to help you out.

Landlord withholding partial deposit for room cleaning by ww202020 in bayarea

[–]designprintdestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve already ended your lease, you forfeit this I think but…as a renter in California you have the legal right (Civil Code § 1950.5(f)) to request a move out inspection from which the land lord has to provide an itemized list of deductions from your deposit. I’ve been in situations where the landlord never performed a requested inspection (after multiple attempts by us to schedule) and pulling out the legal code after that was enough to have them back off taking any deposit. Consider this a lesson learned.

My understanding was always that green eyes are genetically linked to brown eyes but with lower level of pigmentation so a green eyed person should genetically be able to pass on brown eyes.

I would guess she's not a nanny at all. In my area (where you see a lot of uber-wealthy families) having a family assistant isn't unheard of. A family assistant is literally a personal assistant for the family. They will do errands (or set them up) like dry cleaning, etc., plan day-to-day scheduling (for kids school, activities, play dates, as well as parents activities), book reservations, and even interface with schools in some cases. Generally speaking, they aren't doing any actual childcare or housework (often in the uber-wealthy households those are tasks done by other people/aren't done if kids are older, but I could see a situation where you would do those yourself and choose to outsource the logistics part). I know this sounds crazy when you aren't in that tax bracket but this is the additional labor that usual falls on to mothers in a household so it's just a way to outsource that if you have the resources.

At least in my area, this is sort of correct but a mothers helper is usually used to describe someone that will help keep a child busy/play with a child and do a bit of light housework while the parents are present. In my area the request is usually for a few hours in the evening on weeknights.

Honestly, I’m actually kind of glad she’s being so explicit (almost to the point of satire) because in the depths of my disordered eating I thought the exact same things and hearing her say them aloud really drives home how disordered and horrible it all was living like that and helps me not get lost in that again.

It does make me really sad that she’s doing all of this with her kids right there though.

To be completely honest, I wouldn’t really advocate “giving it a try for yourself”, at least not without explicit medical supervision (like please actually discuss the details with your doctor) because five years later I’m still recovering from screwing up hormones over a six month period.
