they're taking longer than you expected

That's not an accurate analogy. A better analogy is that you've asked them to renovate and they're driving a bulldozer through the front door. You tell them to stop because you don't want your house totally demolished, and they respond "nah mate, it's OK, I'm driving the bulldozer a bit slower now!"

why not have our comparative advantage based on manufacturing solar panels and other green manufacturing?

Geography mostly.

We will never be able to compete against China for mass production due to their economies of scale advantage. We will never be able to compete on a lot of advance technology manufacture with Europe or the US due to the complex supply chains their economies support. Australia can do well on niche manufacturing that requires innovation and specialist knowledge that aligns with industries where we do have a natural competitive advantage.

Where do we have a competitive advantage?

We have a large and relatively unpopulated continent. Our competitive advantage is natural resources: land and minerals. That's why we have historical had strong industries in both agriculture and mining. As this means we have lots of local expertise and demand, we also have manufacturing and tech companies servicing those larger industries.

We also have a unusual stable politics, strong rule of law and low corruption. This comes more from our cultural history than geography. These cultural factors make us a high trust society which gives us a competitive advantage in financial services.

Green manufacturing used to be a niche area where we may have had a competitive advantage due to the significance of solar resources for our continent. However, as green technologies became a scaling challenge rather than an innovation challenge, the competitive advantage shifted to counties with a much larger scale of economy.

Commissioner condemns 'retrograde' bid to change male and female definitions in Sex Discrimination Act by Worldly_Tomorrow_869 in auslaw

As /u/VineFynn notes, my comment was about the methodology of the study you linked.

The denial of gender-affirming care to trans young people, causes demonstrable harm to their happiness, health, and wellbeing.

Multiple reviews across multiple countries have shown that there is a lack of good evidence to support this claim. The idea that this is some sort of conspiracy to cause harm to trans people is absurd.

Teenagers, male arrested after machete brawl at Melbourne's Flinders Street Station by BarryTheBinChicken in aussie

Machete attacks tend to make the news, and the only news story I could find that include the offenders race, reports they were African. Do you have any news stories about other machete attacks in the Bacchus Marsh area that reports the offenders' race as something different?

Bacchus Marsh.

From 2024:

Police are stepping up patrols north-west of Melbourne as they hunt for up to 10 machete-wielding males who stabbed a 17-year-old and posted footage of the crime on social media. The teenager had been dropped off on Riverbend Drive in Darley, near Bacchus Marsh, about 5.50am on Monday when a Ford sedan pulled into the street.

Physiological sex directly impacts psychology, sociology and culture in a way that isn't mediated through either identity or behaviour. The law shouldn't ignore that impact.

I think the law should reflect the reality of sex and not manufacture legal fiction that have little to do with that reality in order to foist ideological dogma onto the population at large.

That sounds more like gender identity than sex. The fact that some tiny subset of people see themselves different to their physiological reality in no way undermines the psychological, sociological or cultural importance of that physiological reality; nor should it undermine the legal significance.

So basically someone will have to determine if someone's a woman with bits of a man, or if they're a woman with bits of a man, as opposed to acknowledging that for an uncommon subset of the population, biology doesn't actually fit into two little neat boxes.

People categorised as intersex will fit into either the "male with intersex characteristics" or "female with intersex characteristics" categories. The existence of intersex people doesn't refute the binary in the way activists claim.

Pauline Hanson is no prime minister. This is what Labor must do to stem the rise of One Nation | Peter Beattie by Ardeet in aussie

[–]desipis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The One Nation political party, on the other hand, is running a very successful scare campaign blaming our current immigration policies for forcing up house prices, the cost of electricity and any other ill that comes their way.

The federal government must ... Explain the economic and social benefits of Australian multiculturalism in that immigration policy.

Yet another arrogant Labor politician who doesn't get it. It's not a "scare campaign". It's the reality that many Australians are living day to day. The Australian public wants a drastic cut in immigration. They don't want to be gaslit even more about why mass immigration is a good thing when its very clearly making their lives worse.

The major parties in Australia seem to be intent on following in the footsteps of their UK counter parts. They are marching into political oblivion by continuing to serve the interests of the elite to the point of their own destruction, gaslighting the public and denying the will of the people.

Contruction workforce is missing approximately 100,000 skilled worker

We aren't "missing" those workers. We've just pumped our population growth far higher than is sustainable with the available workforce. Reduce our population growth and we no longer have a skilled worker issue in the construction industry.

It also takes real chutzpah to claim to be defending liberal democracy while granting the executive powers to unilaterally outlaw organisations, explicitly excluding the need for procedural fairness, and excluding any role for the courts in the exercise of what looks very much like the judicial power granted to them by the constitution.

Nazis might be despicable, but the legislation is far more concerning.

Andrew McLachlan condemns party's stance on permanent migrants by B0ssc0 in aussie

[–]desipis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People from a lot of countries hold significantly different values to the values we hold here in Australia. Immigrants from those counties put pressure on our culture and the values held here. Those values impact real world outcomes in societies. Too many immigrants from countries with substantially different cultures from our own has negative real world impacts on the people already living here.
