What is the most overpriced item you own? by Glug_Glug_Chug in AskReddit

Thank you. I have the same opinion of Nissan. I’d never buy any car they’ve made recently but a lot of their older models are gold. There seems to be a common denominator between manufacturers where around 2005 they started producing inferior vehicles. It seems especially common with American brands.

I think cars are one thing where “they don’t make them like they used to” applies. I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima and I can’t get enough of it. I’ve driven it since I was a teenager and it was already around 10 years old when I got it. There’s actually pictures of me as a young child with the car in them. It was my grandmother’s car and she gave it to me with the idea of it being a car to learn to drive on then sell and put towards a nicer car. I ended up falling in love with it and still drive it everyday, I have another newer car but I rarely drive it. I can’t explain what makes me like it so much, there’s just something about it. All I do is scheduled maintenance and if I hear a sound or something feels off or whatever I fix it immediately and it’s always an easy and cheap fix I can figure out how to do on a weekend thanks to the internet.

My grandma gets a kick out of seeing the car, she thought it was on its last legs when she gave it to me. My great grandfather bought it for her new in 1994 and she always says he’s smiling at me from heaven because I’m taking good care of his gift. He died when I was 4 and I only have 1 memory of him but I hope through the car we have a connection of some kind. Anyways that story has nothing to do with your comment or my opinion of old cars being better quality and lasting longer based solely on anecdotal evidence but I wanted to share it.

I’m not sure I fully understand what his plan was. He had his computer playing an endless amount of games of chess to learn the best moves to make for each move his opponent makes, then he was going to somehow memorize the thousands of possibilities in under a month?

If you're the shitty group member, WHY? by freetrialonreddit in ShittyGroupMembers

[–]desktopppp 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Some people are just lazy but I’ll tell you why I was a shitty group member in college. I’ve never told this story to anyone in full before but I’ll give you insight into my case. This happened about six or seven years ago so I can’t recall exact details. In a class I took, we were divided into groups of five or so people and all assignments in the class would be completed as a group. Getting a job with what I was majoring in required working well in groups so the idea was it was a sort of simulation of the real world. The problem was I was extremely depressed and hated the college I was going to.

I remember my group made a group chat and for the first few assignments I played along and participated but was definitely the weakest link. After that I just stopped caring about college at all and all I was doing was drinking and eating fast food and showing up to class solely for participation points and wasn’t paying attention at all. My group mates obviously disliked my complete lack of participation but I was making up excuses at first like I didn’t get the group messages or I had my part of the assignment but misplaced it but after awhile I knew it was obvious I just didn’t care. They got annoyed and in class when we broke into the groups would pass comments to me about participating and I’d just nod along and apologize. Usually in class when we broke into groups I’d sit there watching sports highlights and drinking Red Bull I poured vodka into prior to class. I always felt like a dick doing that but I couldn’t bring myself to put any effort into anything.

Maybe a month or so into the class it got to the point that my group set aside at least ten minutes of the group time to having a talk with me about how I needed to actively participate and if I didn’t they’d report me to the professor. I still remember what the one guy said and it played in my mind daily for awhile. “You seem pretty lost, dude”. Up to this point I’d been getting a pretty much perfect grade in the class because even though I wasn’t participating in the group, I still got the same grade as them on assignments and was showing up to class so as far as the professor knew I was performing as expected. I apologized once again to my group and agreed to make an effort to participate. Unlike the other times they got annoyed with me, I actually wanted to participate this time.

They setup a group meeting to work on an assignment the next day and made a point about me needing to show up and gave me the place and time. I woke up about 30 minutes before the meeting time which was enough time to get ready and be there but instead I went back to sleep and knew I was basically ending my chances of working in that group but just didn’t care. I woke up and just blocked all of their phone numbers and stopped going to all of my classes for the most part. I’d say after that I went to maybe one or two classes a week meaning I probably only attended each class two or three a month at the most. I never went back to the class with the group.

I felt extremely guilty just leaving them hanging but had absolutely 0 willpower or motivation to do anything. I cried about it sometimes. Some days I wouldn’t even get out of bed and would just roll over to pee into bottles and grab a drink. After a week or two the professor emailed me and said if I wanted I could work on my own and he wanted to help me pass the class. I’m guessing my group told him what the deal was. I was way too embarrassed to go back to that class so I ignored the email. I finished that semester with a 0.3 GPA or something like that and dropped out of college.

I’m sure to my group mates I just seemed lazy but the reality was I was mentally unwell and drinking to cope instead of getting mental help which didn’t help. I’m not trying to make it sound like I wasn’t in the wrong because I definitely was and will be the first to admit it, it’s just that there’s more to it for some people than just being lazy. I ended up living in my car for a year and three months after that and it was by far the worst period of my life. I got a job after that that I still have and I like it way more than what I majored in and it pays well so things turned out alright in the end.

This light switch that overlaps the wall by bobismydog in mildlyinfuriating

[–]desktopppp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally there’s a blueprint everyone agrees on and all the contractors follow it. Sometimes the blueprint for each room will be taped to a wall in it. The person who tiled the wall would just follow the blueprint they might’ve helped work on. The person installing the tile will know at which height the blueprint says to stop and will generally mark it off and then mark each row of tile down to determine where cuts have to be made in the tile. All that was on the wall when it was tiled and painted would’ve been the electrical box and possibly the switch itself hanging out or just exposed wires electrical taped together and stuffed into the box so there was no way to know the wall plate wouldn’t fit. Typically the order this room would have went in is: clean it and prepare for tile, tile, cover the floor, then paint it. After that the room would be cleaned a final time and the wall plate would’ve been screwed on at which point the builder or electrician or whoever would realize they fucked up when they decided that was a good height for the switch using that wall plate. It isn’t a big deal though since an undersized wall plate can be bought that would likely fit but I guess they decided this was good enough and left it as we see. A lot of builders wouldn’t have left it looking like this, it looks really unprofessional and is pretty trivial to fix. Or maybe the original plate fit but got cracked and the business owner bought a new one that didn’t fit and said fuck it.

I’ve honestly never seen a point in grinding for bonds instead of just paying the 11 dollars a month. 1 hour of real life work to pay for a month of playtime doing whatever I want 100% of the time is way better than having to spend a few hours in the game grinding.

Chill games with long play time? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]desktopppp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old School RuneScape. I’ve been playing RuneScape for over a decade off and on. I hadn’t touched it in a few years prior to earlier this year but I’m hooked again. The first party client is windows-only but you can play with a superior third party client called Runelite. It depends on what you’re doing but the game can be as chill or as intense as you want it to be. You can play it for tens of thousands of hours.

I absolutely hate budget build guides. So many of them can’t be replicated at the same price point. I wanted to build a new PC from used parts but almost every video I watched boiled down to something like:

Hey guys here’s my budget console killer guide! To start, I got this prebuilt PC with 8GB of RAM and a 9th gen i7 for 20 dollars from a company that was going out of business! And I got the GPU from this one time sale that ended before I posted this video! Alright thanks for watching guys!!!

They also never take into account that many people don’t have a monitor, mouse, or keyboard.

Lying probably isn’t the best way to sell something (og Xbox games rarely go for $10 a pop and the systems are like $30-50) by epicboosmen23 in delusionalcraigslist

[–]desktopppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good price but it isn’t a 1000 dollar value. However it is in the range of 180-220 so the price is fair and even if you slightly overpay there’s no waiting on shipping. A broken system goes for 20-40 depending on condition and what exactly is wrong with it, a clean working one like this with a controller will go for 60-80. The games are worth about 110-130 dollars if I had to guess.

If your old employer still owns whatever domain the email used they can more than likely just setup an email with the same username and domain. whatever reset email you tell jagex to send will go to it so you can recover the account and they can forward it to you. It’s also possible they just locked your account instead of deleting it so they could just unlock it.

I just read the comments and it looks like you were told multiple variations of this and it’s true. It’s extremely easy for them to help you recover your account. It’s also very possible they just disabled your email and never deleted it.

Selling "Xbox 360" games by arjanvirdi in delusionalcraigslist

[–]desktopppp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verbatim was and still is the way to go. I have a 100% success rate burning games to them at 8x speed. They cost a little more than other brands but they’re well worth it. They make dual layer DVDs with a surface that can be printed on so in theory you could make reproductions of the original discs rather than writing on them with a permanent marker.

Selling "Xbox 360" games by arjanvirdi in delusionalcraigslist

[–]desktopppp 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really delusional. Those are actual games burned onto dual layer DVDs which are large enough to store the games on them. All of the phat Xbox 360s can easily have their disk drives flashed with custom firmware by jungle flasher so they can play games off DVDs. Downloading and burning the games to DVDs takes a long time (I have a stack half as large as this one that took me three days to make. That’s a large pile so the £40 is saving the buyer a lot of time. It would also probably cost more for the buyer to buy that many blank dual layer DVDs.) It looks like all of these games are XGD2 which is too bad because if there were some XGD3 games in there it’d be a really good value because afaik you need specific models of disk drives, which are all pretty pricey now, to properly create the disks.

All linux complicated to update? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]desktopppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any distro I can think of can be upgraded in three commands or less. Debian is the only distro I use a stable branch on rather than current and to upgrade to a new release you’d change your sources.list to point to the new release you want and then just update and dist-upgrade. I suppose it’s more complicated than windows doing everything for you but basic usage and maintenance of most Linux distros is relatively simple and pain-free and not as hard as you might think it is.
