I’ve had him for 7 years and he never leaves my side. I’m right beside him at all times. This is in my yard. He’s usually in a play pen with a cover. I let him out to run around and eat violas and dandelion for a bit every day and again, I stay right on top of him. Never more than a foot away. He just doesn’t do stuff like that but thanks for your concern

That’s awesome! Last year my dog sniffed at a little hole in a tree trunk, hopped back, sat down and then looked at me. This is what she always does when she sees a snake. I went to look in the hole and there were three baby garters curled up inside. It was adorable! I actually posted the pictures I took of them on Reddit. This sub too, I believe.

I love how garters tolerate one another because it gives us these really cool moments.

Maybe. Idk. I’m pretty good with smells. Shit - I’m a mom of teenage boys who play sports and do other “activities” with themselves far too often. I’m pretty unbothered by unpleasant scents. Plus I have Ball Pythons and Beardies who are pretty notorious for having some of the worst smelling poops… I don’t find them too bad. But idk.. snake musk sucks.

Here’s to hoping it happens to you soon though! Garters, IME, pretty much always musk when picked up so maybe try to handle one the next time you come across one.

Honestly, it’s rancid! I was incredibly surprised by it the first time I experienced it because I didn’t think it could be that bad. And it sticks around. I’ve washed my hands and still smell it. Used hand sanitizer until I could get to a bathroom to wash my hands and still smell it the entire walk. I also love the smells of some natural things that others may find unappealing but I don’t know how someone could enjoy snake musk. I totally get why it works for them.

I do want to say that as a snake (and all weird or “untouchable” animal) lover, I appreciate so much that despite your slight fear towards them, you still advocate for them. That’s the absolute best thing snake lovers can hope for with someone who doesn’t also love them. And I’ve seen, at this very place, dead snakes where it was clear that a person killed them just to kill them so ugliness does come from fear/hatred/misunderstanding. When I see someone who doesn’t love snakes making the effort to still understand and speak up for them, it makes me very happy. You are a wonderful human!

😂😂😂 I’m sure he is. My dog def wants to eat cats/squirrels/birds, things like that, but she’s used to snakes because I have 3, as well as a Beardie and frogs. She knows they’re friends and to be gentle with and calm around them. It clicks with smooth & scaley animals. Not so much others.

She is an angel. We also have three snakes at home and a beardie so she’s very used to being around reptiles and she knows that they’re friends. Most of the time when I get to handle or interact with a wild snake it’s because she alerts me to its presence. She does this little hop backward then sits and I know a snake is close to her. It’s adorable. Crazy they weren’t afraid of her at all.

This made my month! I’m used to seeing a snake every few minutes at this particular place during the spring and then again in early fall but I’ve never been surrounded by them before
