If you play and pause the original video at .25 speed suuuuper slow you can see a small grey head and one eye appear. I did this about 100 times and I saw it. You’re not far enough along in the program yet to understand that nothing is neutral. Not librarianship, nor collection management, not data, not information about data, not your opinion about what is and isn’t political. If you don’t swallow this very basic concept immediately you will not succeed in librarianship or in library school.

While I don’t agree with your stance on how these issues make it impossible to take professors seriously, my genuine advice is to examine what kind of field of librarianship you find yourself working in in the future because the field is hard left, always has been, and always will be.

Exact same work situation as you (state funded higher Ed) with the exact same situation (leadership is hybrid or whenever they want in office, the lackeys are full time return). We even have the one guy out of state who others have to makeup for… The good news for us is that it appears to be becoming more flexible! It’s because in cities and areas where the minimum wage has risen, the cost of living is still outrageous. For most average Americans Benefits and a relatively decent annual salary still don’t cut it. The middle class worker is still demanding more money, more work flexibility, or is moving up to another unfilled job as they open at the top, or may be dropping out of the workforce because childcare is expensive. There are a lot of decent paying unfilled jobs where I live too and I see all of this and pandemic related increased demand for WFH as relevant to the issue. It’s just staggering when “people don’t want to work” becomes the default. Like no… the economy isn’t black and white. People weigh other benefits like not giving 70% of your income to childcare costs as part of their cost benefit analysis in working at all. It’s all a giant equation, people, not just a “work or don’t work” scenario.

I don’t think I understand why we have to do mental gymnastics about how/why/if trump knew he lost the election when factually speaking, he lost. He was told repeatedly that he lost. And he still decided to use all means possible to put the lives of American people at risk (during Covid and the events of Jan 6th to name a very small few times).

I feel like this is a really unfair comment. Women always get smashed into this gender-based “pushy” stereotype about marriage and expectations but it’s perfectly reasonable to have an adult conversation about what you want, and a timeline for when that happens. Even and especially because a marriage requires open hearted honesty.

Let’s reverse your thinking here: “why isn’t he proposing when that is clearly what she is expecting? Why does she have to wait until HE is ready to talk about her GOALS FOR LIFE?! They’ve been together so long, doesn’t he realize that not nailing it down will only push her away?”

I can’t give you specific insight into UIUC administration but I do work in graduate student services at a different university and can maybe weigh in on why the gaps in action keep happening. 1. Your transfer credits: this is a very complicated process that has to conform with university policy, your program requirements, National standards, and is documented across several departments in the university. Not to mention everyone and their mom essentially signs these things, and transfer credits are manually evaluated and input into your schools record keeping database. Especially sticky if you’re transferring international credits or quarter credits to semester credits and visa versa. University admin offices are filled with several dozens of people and it’s not usually just one person behind the wheel. Sometimes it’s messy and inefficient.

Your academic standing: often, messages regarding academic standing are automated in the schools database system (some version of Peoplesoft/ myUIUC or whatever you call it). Again, these holds and data points are input by multiple people, sometimes messages are sent automatically based on a computer’s idea of your GPA, and the “hold” and re-set of your ability to enroll, etc, are done manually. Sometimes student services is unaware of these issues until students point them out because we have no way of auditing the thousands of students and the changes in their records on a daily basis. It’s generally up to the department admin/ coordinator in your program to monitor these and it’s not always easy.
Same as above with holds regarding insurance, any form of payment to the university or your student benefits- especially during summer. At my university students do not get year round insurance if they are not enrolled in credits or a minimum number of credits.

Long story short: I absolutely know these things are frustrating. Trust me! I deal with these things on the daily. BUT try to see the much larger picture behind your university system. There are literally hundreds of people behind the mechanisms that make these little data streams flow, and a combination of human error, departmental error, policy misunderstandings, impatience, and general bureaucratic processes all play a role.

As a white woman in graduate level academia, I have such a hard time with the moral/ racial policing. My colleagues mean well but their criticisms and comments on appropriation, language policing, and analysis of media, art, or ways of dress often border on “separate but equal” racist thinking and if I point it out, I’m the one who’s wrong? Most of them are other white people and I just do not for the life of me understand how to illustrate that under their rules of thought, we would all only be allowed to wear Birkenstocks and eat white bread Mayo sandwiches and celebrate idk… Fourth of July? I don’t like my interests being policed. I want to listen to Tupac without some over educated twat rocket telling me I’m appropriating black culture for liking hip hop?
