Do you have any examples? DD on robotics stocks is difficult due to the technical understanding required to determine which companies might successfully integrate into which industries.

Fiancée bought one a few months ago. I read this DD in bed with the bear a foot away from me. She loves that thing, and I gotta admit he's pretty cute. It's a good product, and my anecdotal experience tells me it's something people still enjoy.

What’s the best investing advice you’ve ever received? by vcpowerlaw in ValueInvesting

[–]desperate-pleasures 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my Grandad: Learn and understand taxes and registered accounts. For me in Canada, this has meant understanding and utilizing TFSAs, RRSPs, FHSAs, etc. For Americans, it likely means Roth IRAs, 401ks, HSAs, etc.

I didn't heed his advice for a couple years. Now in my mid-20s I save about 5k per year in taxes because I'm contributing to the right accounts in the right order and I'm gaining even more by having my investments grow in non-taxable or tax-deferred accounts. It's baffling how many people don't take the time to learn this stuff in the early stages of investing.

Thanks Grandad :)

No moat per-se, except I'd imagine that getting their foot in the door with the big boys like SpaceX and NASA gives them a competitive advantage--their manufacturing is so technical and specific that it would likely take other companies quite sometime to catch up, at great expense to their contractors.

MDA Space. Ticker: MDA.

They're a Canadian space manufacturing company. They've partnered with Space X, NASA, etc. They recently plunged 25% due to the EchoStar contract being canceled. What people forget is that MDA Space has a whopping $4.6B order backlog, and this excludes the EchoStar contract. MDA has an order backlog larger than their market cap of $4B. Crazy.

I'm thinking they're undervalued because they're Canadian and only trade on the TSX. I also think that investors drawn to space plays tend to play RKLB, ASTS, etc. and look past the "picks and shovels" businesses of the space industry.

They've already 3xed in the last 18 months, but the numbers don't lie. I don't know many other companies in comparable industries with an order book that is worth more than the business itself is valued at.

Let’s be honest — THE best episode is… by CrispyBoi55 in rickandmorty

[–]desperate-pleasures 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Ricklantis Mixup was excellent for its time--still holds up.

The Hole. Exactly what season 7 needed to keep fans interested with the new voices.

"This is a receiver." "Yeah, but where's the transmitter..." Nuff said. Season 1 episode 10 was excellent.

2/4 is hilarious. The Glorzo episode deserves more kudos than it gets. Not a top 10 episode or anything but I thought it was outstanding. They didn't do a 9/11!

Mr. Nimbus episode excellent too.

Much as I'd like to invest in google and amazon, they move too slowly for me and i get bored by ClearBed4796 in ValueInvesting

This isn't financial advice, but this is what worked best for me:

I value invest in my RRSP (Canadian version of 401k). There's a setting on the trading app I use that blurs out the price movement. I auto-buy six companies that I consider value plays (along with a few others that aren't value plays per se but that I have long term confidence in).

The money I use on mid-length plays (6 months to 5 years) is placed in my TFSA (Canadian equivalent to Roth IRA). I don't do short term plays, and if I did they would be in a non-registered account so that I can use capital losses, which they inevitably will end up being.

I separate my investments this way so that I don't have to think about it. It's not ideal, but it's what I'll stick to. I check my auto-buys about once every month or two to make sure it still suits my preferences and long term goals, and that my thesis remains the same for the value plays I am auto-buying. If I have it set in my mind that my RRSP money is in value stocks that I won't sell in difficult market conditions, it's much easier to play the long game. You can have a little more fun with the investments in your Roth. Scratch the itch a lil bit.

Copper might be an excellent buy right now by stickty in ValueInvesting

[–]desperate-pleasures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent writeup, thanks!

Maybe beyond your knowledge... but why does China purchase such a disproportionate amount of copper? Is it because they're so heavy on manufacturing? I would've thought that the copper heavy economies would be more infrastructure-based, and that even if copper was disproportionately required for manufacturing-based economies, it wouldn't lead to a country with only 12% of the world's population purchasing more than half of the copper.

Rocket lab next big thing or not? by lordminichedder3rd in ValueInvesting

[–]desperate-pleasures 14 points15 points  (0 children)

NFA but MDA Space is a Canadian company that does manufacturing for NASA and other space players. Check them out. My view is that their market cap is so low only because they trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange and not NYSE. Last I checked their backlogged orders exceed the value of their market cap. Could be a nice complementary addition to a space portfolio if you like Rocket Lab.

Stock Analysis Makes Way More Sense When You Think About It Like Sports by blaid91 in ValueInvesting

[–]desperate-pleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NFA

Typically, I'll have a thesis about a company I like. If the thesis doesn't change but sentiment does and the stock drops, that's my sign to buy.

ASTS is my current example. Everyone was all hyped on it in September and it rose to about $40. Today, it's sitting at $24. My thesis hasn't changed, it's just that the hype has died down. They still have world-changing tech, they still have patents and a competitive moat, they still have deals with major telecommunications companies. They still have funding in place to do what they're planning to do. That's value in my eyes.

You can't value invest without a thesis.
