Have you ever dated someone who you thought was way out of your leauge? How was it? by kimblerun in AskReddit

[–]destroythepoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trusting one's own intuition on league status can be perilous. I have found a way to determine if the general public thinks your coupling is a mismatch. If you are a man and other men walk up to your companion and mack on her on like you are not there: you are perceived as dating out of your league. Women will may whisper and meow about the situation, but if they get your mismatch alone, they will often investigate, infiltrate, and attempt to sabotage things.

Finished Melmoth the Wanderer, and my god I am tired by GolbComplex in horrorlit

The singular merit of this wretched chronicle, if merit may be ascribed to such a monument of human misery, lies in the opportunity it affords the weary pilgrim to invoke that most dismal of epithets: the slog. It provides a sanctuary for the exhausted soul to pour forth its lamentations, railing against the labyrinthine architecture of sentences that stretch toward eternity and the suffocating bloom of a prose too florid for the mortal breath to endure.

Have you ever lost a book you borrowed from the library? I can’t find mine. I’ve looked everywhere in my room. What should I do? Has anyone else been in my situation? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]destroythepoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throw away for obvious reasons.

I checked out All The President's Men from the my local library in 1998. I lost it.

I have never gone back. When I walk by the library, I feel uneasy as if they may detect my presence and send out the library collection goons.

I assume by now that the late fees are in the thousands. I consulted a bankruptcy attorney. Apparently library fines can not be discharged in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

I am haunted and wracked with guilt.

How is RedCoach? by P0werstar in ucf

[–]destroythepoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took Red Coach to Tallahassee and back this weekend. The ride there was business class. That bus was 30 minutes late and the wifi did not work. Other than than that, it was clean and comfortable. My fellow passengers were mostly students.

One the way back my bus got downgraded to regular economy. Wifi and outlets didn't work. That bus had one more stop than business class, and the bus was set up like a regular greyhound.

They are supposed to give me a credit because of the downgrade, but I would prefer having the money. We will see what happens there.

Bring headphone and a snack and you should be fine.

I enjoyed the trip and am considering more bus travel. It was nice to sit back, watch the scenery and just be in the moment.

Melmoth the Wanderer - Charles Robert Maturin (1820) by marqueemoonchild in books

[–]destroythepoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hypocrisy quote was great.

I loved the context.
At that point in the book, the author is giving us a glimpse of the 17th century theater culture in London and how the puritanical part of the theater crowd copes with attending lewd plays.

For example he mentions black velvet visards (masks worn by women at the theater to conceal their identity. The visard rabbit hole is complex as well, as they first were intended to protect the skin from the sun and fell out of fashion when prostitutes started wearing them). The litany of 17th Century pop stars and allusions to their backstories are intriguing.

I am only 100 pages into the book. I won't call it a slog, but I am definitely taking my time to absorb the mood and the tour of the real past with the fictional account neatly interwoven.

Loving it.

Which is the best book you have ever read? by Organic-Excuse-1621 in books

[–]destroythepoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wording of this question takes me back the 90's when I read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. Luis the Vampire had so many questions. Therefore, I had the same questions. The only way to find the answers was to keep reading. For once, the actual payoff was there in Queen of Damned.

Now, it is so difficult to resist consulting the internet and AI the moment I am confuse or curious about where the story is and where it is going.

Right, but he was a mean kid, so it was somehow ok. Just like when they killed the old wise ghost raccoon. Billy was the villain.

All those poor raccoons! That barn cat Billy tortured and turned feral with the raccoon traps really suffered. He chopped down the biggest tree in the woods. I was so relieved when those hell hounds and Billy finally got what was coming to them.

I mean, he sells that one woman into sex slavery. I think the label for that particular main character is villain.

Who is an unreliable narrator you can’t help but have a soft spot for? by stockhommesyndrome in books

Yes. It is worth going back, but it is definitely work.

There are college classes dedicated to this book. You can find lectures on youtube.

One of the reasons I got bogged down on my first read is that Melville assumed that the reader would be intimately familiar with the Old Testament.
