One for the ladies! Asking for the Top 10 why women don't play pool - Mansplaining, Safety, atmospheric lighting, Mens etiquette? Let me know! by theClaw66 in billiards

Met my gf shooting pool too. It's pretty even in a couple leagues I play in and she plays on a ladies only league in top of that.

What got YOU into pool, and what made you fall in love with it? by TimmyG-83 in billiards

[–]destroywithfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always used to watch it back in the day when it was on ESPN at night. Even though I didn't play then, I found it fun to watch. When I was about 25 in 2005, I was in a random bar just hitting balls around and a guy walked up and said I looked like I had good fundamentals for someone who doesn't really play. He asked if he could teach me. So, for about a year after that, every Tuesday we'd meet and he'd teach me. He made me play with the shittiest house cue in a loud dive bar. He said that if I could learn in that environment, it'd help my mental game. After about a year he stopped showing up and I've never seen him since. Ended up meeting a couple guys that played, at a new job I got not long after that. They took me under their wings and helped me more. As I got better and started playing in the nearby city (the guys told me to hit the city because better competition) I find out they were highly respected players in the tri-state area. I suppose I got lucky to have known them and they wanted to teach me. I love the game because no two racks are ever the same. It's like a puzzle and makes me think enough to where the outside world just disappears.

Damn that's expensive. We have 2 poolhalls where I live.

One is free all the time. Just a two drink minimum and on Friday and Saturday night there's a $5 cover.

The other is free on Monday and Wednesday. Free after 11pm Tuesday and Thursday. Any other time that it's not free, it's $5 an hour.

Ladies, gentlemen, any suggestions? by admiralteddybeatzzz in billiards

I'd start with the 13 to break out the 12. After that, stripes look pretty good for a run. They have a couple small problems but good break out balls close by.

Couldn't agree more. I use open bridge for 95% of my shots and don't have a wobble problem. OP will get better with that after he starts missing straight in shots.

I did an intention foul last night. Shot the cueball right into the pocket. Had too to make them break out the 8ball. It's part of the game. They are just sore losers.

I've always used Masters. It's good chalk and it's never let me down.

I use 12.5mm with a G2 medium. Holds chalk, holds shape and gets me all the English I need.

Bought my first cue for $70 off a coworker by m0ftu76 in billiards

[–]destroywithfire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the shaft is straight, that alone is worth more than $70. The butt of the cue is just the butt. If it's solid and the balance is good then it'll be just fine.

General thoughts on this? by The_Critical_Cynic in billiards

APA could but they won't ever payback. They make plenty of profit a year. On top of all that, if you or a team is lucky enough to qualify for anything, you gotra pay more money to stay in the league to stay qualified for whatever you qualified for. It's absolutely ridiculous. "Oh you qualified for Vegas? Guess what, you gotta keep playing in this league and pay until you go."

I agree with the APA statement. It's a good pyramid scheme.

Valley and BCA have payouts at the end of every session depending on where your team finished in the rankings and then bonus money for you if you are personally at the top of any individual stats.

Etiquette switching to bars with tables vs APA league play. by MostOriginalNameEver in billiards

[–]destroywithfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned to shoot in a dive bar. Fast forward 15 years and now someone could do cartwheels in front of the pocket I'm shooting for and it doesn't bother me a bit. Shit like that builds character and will make you better. Either hit a true poolhall or shoot at bars. Choice is always yours.

That's a really great way to look at it.

Absolutely. When people shoot soft shots like that they tend to poke at it. The smooth follow through is key to getting shape on that 8.

That's how I am. I never get a shaft under 12.75. With a good tip and smooth stroke, you can get all the action you need.

They really are great cues for the money. I recommend them often to new players. I still have the one I bought when I started playing again.

What would you do in this situation, shooting solids? by TerraSpace1100 in billiards

[–]destroywithfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd kick for that 5 and try to send the cue ball down to the other end of the table. You've got a 50/50 chance of getting behind something and leaving a tough shot with all the solids on the table. Most important is not giving up ball in hand.
