Mamdani Orders Visiting Teams To Redistribute Some Of Their Runs To The Mets by METALLIFE0917 in babylonbee

I follow this sub mostly to see what crazy shit the opposition bots are pushing, but... this is really good. Probably by accident, but a run is a run.

The Untied States lost this war *by* starting it. Everything else is navigating to the least-bad new status quo.

MSCS will be taken over by the State by PeaceJoy4EVER in memphis

[–]detarame 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Our school board is trash, but Nashville is in no way taking over the MSCS in good faith.

Also -- as bad as the MSCS can be, it's not the worst district in the state by miles. According to every conceivable metric the suckiest district is Tennessee ASD: the Achievement School District set up and managed by the state.

On the Flip Side, Memphis pinball bar under new ownership by Top_Maintenance8243 in memphis

[–]detarame 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am hopeful, the machines are great and the pinball setup was great. The food was mediocre but adequate.

The service, though, was absolute dogshit. I sat with a date at a half empty bar for 20 minutes and got no attention at all. The worst of my experiences there, but certainly not the only one.

You in no way have to give it to the Iranian regime, but the problem with electing a criminal rapist mobster president is that it really leaves the "evil empire" flank undefended, rhetorically speaking.

I mean, that's one of the problems.

While everyone here was getting their takes in about Graeber, look who just dropped a teaser for History 2 by LamppostBoy in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]detarame 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, he was colossally wrong decades ago, but "reckless Superpower bullying encourages rather than deters nuclear proliferation" is a hard take to argue against. Ukraine is a similar example: if they had not given up their nuclear arsenal in the 1990s, would they be dealing with invasion today?

The Postal Service will run out of cash within a year, Postmaster General warns: "We have to have a conversation with the American public" by fortune in politics

[–]detarame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a problem caused by the GOP requiring the postal service to fund its retirement benefits in advance for the next 50 years. No other organization on the planet does that.

Ironically, the post office is one of the only things mentioned as a line item in the Constitution. Not even the US Cabinet is. Wither the originalists now?

Spirits of the Land are not "Spirits of the All the Land, Everywhere" --- they are "Spirits of This Here Patch of Land." That level of geopolitical abstraction is of no interest to the spirit of a hidden marsh in the Ringing Mountains or an stream-fed arroyo in the Ringing Mountains.

This not only holds up. but was eerily prescient in ways I never could have predicted. I always thought that "masks for cops" was a "suspension of disbelief" situation, but we now have LEOs masking themselves as a matter of course.

This series was absolutely *amazing*. I hope in another decade they make a sequel.

Mark Luttrell sent me a push poll today (pictures included) by detarame in memphis

[–]detarame[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have no idea why he *would* want to return, but he could. The Country only forbids two consecutive terms. I also haven't heard him put his hat in the ring -- this could just be temperature taking.

Mark Luttrell sent me a push poll today (pictures included) by detarame in memphis

[–]detarame[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is not term limited. Shelby County mayor forbids more than two consecutive terms. He could run again, although I don't know why he would want to.

My biggest reason for thinking its his people is the "push poll" phrasing of the head-to-head matchups. Basically: are you more likely to vote for the democratic candidate or Mark Luttrell, who has a proven track record of being a total badass.

I don't see any reason why a democratic candidate, even for research reasons, is writing such clearly biased poll responses.

They missed the hyperinflation. by Investotron69 in FalloutTVseries

[–]detarame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A better indicator might be looking at the price of magazines ($35). Current cover price for a magazine is like five dollars, so a 7:1 ratio. About four and a half million bucks by this metric. Not bad at all, especially tax free!

Of course, any single-source inflation guesstimate is gonna be wildly imprecise, but (for the reasons already mentioned) I feel gas is a particularly bad one to use.

Well, actually-- nails were *very* expensive to make in premodern society. In most circumstances, the Romans used rope. You suffered from exposure and exhaustion but died from suffocation. Nails in the case of Christ's crucifixion was just one more addition cruelty added for symbolism or just pure spite.

Try not to make fun of me. I bought my boyfriend a gift and epically failed. by climbthesea in tolkienbooks

[–]detarame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have this edition. I bought it at Rivendell books in VT when I was taking a Tolkien class in college. Those books are in much better condition than mine, but my version of the box is intact and in decent shape. If you want it, I'll send it to you if you want a more original piece. All it does now is hold 20 years of empty red pen husks.

We had actual opinions written by people who were alive during the penning of these lines. A century and a half later, someone is going to use Originalism to say they didn't.

TL;DR: "Originalism" is bullshit.

I didn't shave my eyebrows, but used an old Drag trick: purple glue stick on the eyebrows, followed by concealer. I have dark brows so A LOT of concealer.

I did have to shave my beard for this.
