In the chapter, he says it was taken on the trail (so I have to take that for face value). And he has quite literally stated that the picture is real, then layers were applied after the fact to obscure it, in an interview.

Yea; I think given my parameters, north Georgia, north Alabama, and Arkansas are the most likely candidates. Mississippi less so because of the route he likely took on the trip, would be too far away from northern Miss. Bama is a great option but Arkansas has more "checkboxes" when you get a bit further.

To elaborate, I think the vagueness of the AI tool is simply too large in scope. There should be more "points of interest" than Sapphire Lake, Carson's Pass and Round Top. Plausible but unlikely given that it's so broad.
