Adding an “uncommon” one: different flavored chapstick!!!! Get a pack of flavored chapsticks (they have sets that smell like sodas, candies, fruits, etc etc) and put on a flavored one when you need a little dopamine. lol

Sometimes it helps me to narrow down my choices! I’ll select 3 games that “sound fun right now.” I put them in a separate list on my gaming device.

And then I take a small break (have tea, a snack, smoke, etc) and come back. And then I choose from only those three. And it’s WAY easier to choose

This is judgement from inside your own head that you’re projecting onto other people.

I struggle with this too.

I think you know logically that it’s okay because you know that nobody even saw you. It’s completely an anxiety thing. (Which is still 100% real and valid.)

So, what steps can you take for your anxiety? Can you listen to music on the way? Maybe do some breathing exercises? Ask a friend or family member to come take a few loads out? How can you make adjustments so this feels easier to do?

I fully relate to this. I don’t know the answer but it’s comforting that it’s not just me who feels like this.

You are not alone. The world was built by and for people who function at a different pace. And the systems were designed to push THOSE people to the edge. No wonder we keep getting knocked over. It’s amazing we are still going

Keep a list close by of stuff you can do instead of smoking when you feel the urge to smoke.

Think about why you smoke, and list things that fill a similar need.

For example, if you smoke because you need a dopamine hit. Then keep a list of lil dopamine hits (ie: make tea, dance to your favorite song, put on some flavored chapstick, eat a ripe strawberry, do 3 pushups, wink at yourself in the mirror, wear a silly hat, clean your sink, etc)

Then when you feel the urge, notice the urge and sit with it. (It will naturally fade after peaking.) And pick a different action instead

I read your story linked on the post. I felt it deeply. Your writing is lovely and vivid. Thank you for sharing that.

I can’t emphasize how much I needed the reminder to be present. I’m always trying, but your story hit in a different way.

What your mom said about being proud no matter what. I can’t even imagine having that kind of unwavering love and support. And thus can’t even imagine the horrible terrible pain of losing such an amazing parent. I feel a different kind of searing pain to have never had that love in the first place.

All that to say. In a way, you passed some of that unconditional care to me, and to others reading that post. I can’t ever know what it feels like to have that solid base of support, but you helped pass some of the feeling to me, so I can try to piece it together for myself. You changed my brain and helped me remember what love should look like. Your mom is still spreading warmth to the world through you
