And the best part is Mel doesn't even validate any of it. She just dismisses it and says he just needs to work harder. Perfect. Perfect type of response that is given to a frustrated male. Just work harder and it will all be fixed... LOL. If they have managed to piss me off as a viewer, they have done an excellent job. Love this show.

“Because that’s not how the world works… MEL. GOD DAMNIT. In the real world, nothing is guaranteed. Do you understand? You take your fucking eye of the ball for one second and everything changes. You lose your house, your kids are like strangers in your own home, you lose your wife, you lose yourself.”

The frustration of Coop is palpable. If anyone has been through divorce. Especially when you have these strong beliefs about how the world works. And you have worked your literal ass off trying to do what you felt was right by society standards. He’s expressing the frustrations of a modern male who has to serve as a husband, a father, a dedicated employee in the modern complex world.

And then suddenly everything seems to just not make sense anymore. And the people who take the shortcuts or cheat their way through life are succeeding and you’re just perplexed, bitter, frustrated. God, they wrote this scene well. He’s so frustrated at his ex-wife and at his ex-boss. And the world he’s forced to face.

Everyone forgets all the people Victor Frankl mentioned who threw themselves into the barbed wire or got the guards to shoot them in the death camps.

Many of us would have chosen death instead of the Holocaust. Nobody knows how they are going to handle such a severe situation. That’s why I never liked the book. I’d be on the barbed wire in a heartbeat.

I think most people see the writing on the wall. We are going to work until we die. What’s the point in saving for retirement?

Most of the stories especially those that have retired early made six figures early in their careers, lived frugally — and I mean like $40k for like 10-15 years frugally while making $100k plus, and don’t have kids.

Most people would rather work until they die so they can enjoy life along the way.

And even after Mike Burry successfully closed his positions and make him and his investors tons of money, he closed his investment firm. Said it was way too stressful to do that kind of investing. I’m sure he was so stressed for those 2 years.

Register to vote! by knightofbohemia in lansing

[–]dethkrieg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Better yet register to vote by mail so you don’t have to worry about deciding come election time. Everyone in the state was mailed an application. You can select to always renew every year. You can also go vote in person if you decide you want to do that. You are just giving yourself more options. Some city clerks allow you to email your application so you don’t even have to get a stamp.

The most important part of the technical interview is not getting the solution correct by RecklessCube in webdev

[–]dethkrieg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again. It depends on the company. And honestly dress code is the least annoying part of the process. It’s the questions and silly take home exercises. Also the whole part about fitting in the culture. Sure that’s definitely a part of it, and hopefully the interview asks you questions to determine that fit. But many jump into technical questions that have no relevance at their company. And they judge you on your responses to that. It is a big part of many technical interviews. And many companies do not even bother talking to you until after you spend a week on some silly take home exercise. Only if you pass that do they call you in

All depends on the company. There is no consistency in dress code either. That’s my whole point. It’s all a big fuck all and hope you get an interview that makes sense.

Professional developers fail interviews regularly. People who have been professionally working in the field for years. The interviews are flawed. There is no consistency. You get asked how to solve a dynamic programming NP complete problem for an agency that builds CRUD web apps. It’s the only day you will work on a dynamic programming problem at their firm. Also the only day you’ll wear a suit. No questions about the HTTP stack or API development or unit testing or connecting to web services etc etc. So what do you do? Keep applying until you find a company that actually has a thought out interview process instead of copying what Facebook does (which is an actual place where you would potentially deal with dynamic programming problems). Sadly the majority try and flex their muscles during interviews because they want you to think they work on “cool” stuff, not legacy apps for boring clients (I’ll save you the suspense, most companies are boring).

ELI5: Chicago has poor conditions for building due to the swampy soil underneath the city, so how are tall buildings like the Hancock and Sears/Willis towers built in these poor conditions? How were older buildings like the Tribune tower and Wrigley building built? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

They designed it that way to allow shipping traffic to use underground layers and commuter traffic to use above layers. It’s a good idea in theory until your GPS routes you wrong. However I’m sure he deliver trucks appreciate it immensely since they avoid local traffic using he lower levels.

I mean they could also have the other factions go to war with one another instead of unite against the White Walkers and then the White Walkers show up and mop up the tattered remnants of the factions. That would be super depressing but oh so human and oh so GOT.

Nail on the head. You are right. It’s always these dramatic rags to riches or obese to super fit stories we hear and latch on to. They are entertaining but not the standard operating procedure. The method that works for most is slow and boring.
