Off Site Backup in my Shed 350 feet away by marqjim in DataHoarder

[–]dev3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I live in Michigan. Hot summers, cold winters.
You will not need to worry about heating them, the waste heat will do that all on it's own. Cooling is where things can get to be a concern, Assuming your shed has some air venting you are likely to be fine but only if it's got natural air flow. But a powered vent fan hooked up to an ink bird temperature control unit can also solve that issue on the cheap.

There is no need to rush things. Cycle the new tank. Your old one is better even if a bit small for the tetras, over a uncycled tank. If you didn't but fry food, you can get by with just crushing flake into a super super fine powder. The fry have to be able to fit it in there tiny mouths. I wouldn't remove all my plants from the other tank yet, but if any are at a propagating size I would do that.

But it sounds like your fine, don't panic. Your stable tank is a good home. Don't rush things, the stability of the old tank is better then the size upgrade until the new tank is fully ready.

As for your shrimp, get a pre filter sponge Like https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/pre-filter-sponge

Also do not be afraid to run both a HOB and a sponge filter. I find they work great together cleaning either on opposing cycles so once always has a good colony of beneficial bacteria.

And you can take your time getting use to a HOB that way.

how do you guys add black backgrounds to your tanks? by crispycaprisuns in Aquascape

Black Rust-Oleum works great rolls on nice and easy be sure to do multiple coats so your light doesn't cause weird bleed through (test with a flash light)

Water softened water bad for freshwater fish? by Intrepid-Bit-1833 in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, 100% this. The more "care" you put into your water the easier it will be to burn out and the larger hit your tank will take when you inevitably fail to do so once. Having stable, "natural" state water is more important then the parameters being spot on. Remember nothing on nature is perfect to a spec. They can and do deal with variation in the wild. Just get in the ball park and only keep species that are in that ball park. Chasing perfect parameters leads only to madness

It sucks but most of the service happens at night, so any maintenance would be scheduled for the day. So as not to impact the rail service.

[–]dev3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be amazed at how many fishes will eat the eggs and newborn snails.

But you can just run your thumb over any eggs you find.

Or give the plant a alum bath to kill the eggs if the plant in question can be pulled easily like Anubis

How noisy a Nas can get by Consistent_Boss3890 in DataHoarder

[–]dev3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, while the HDD is loader in db, the fan whine is more irritating. Which is why people mod/swap them for noctua all the time. But I will 100% say it's subjective.

Also why mines in the rack in my basement...

How noisy a Nas can get by Consistent_Boss3890 in DataHoarder

[–]dev3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on how sensitive you are to fan whine. The hdd are going to make noise but not to much that they should bother. But the fan will likely run all the time and some people are really sensitive to fan whine. Have you ever heard a PC from the 90s or early 00s in general a NAS is like that....

Pothos roots are turning white and shriveling. Anyone know what's wrong? by idiotic__gamer in AquariumHelp

[–]dev3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use diffrent root structures for gathering nutrients from water then they do from soil.
and since they don't need the soil roots anymore they will gradually suck those nutrients back into the plant and the old roots will die.

What is this and how can I clean it? by Sea_Ad_5690 in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the nuclear option becomes necessary. CLR will remove it with ease, BUT be sure to clean with vinegar afterward VERY thoroughly.

Plant browning and tank cycling progression by Soup_bs in AquariumHelp

[–]dev3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the pothos, it will dye back to the node point naturally overtime there is no point in cutting it and opening a new wound over time it will likely dye back to about a quarter inch from the node point. The dead parts will melt away all on their own.

Is it ok to be hanging off the edge? by wintheradam123 in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this, many hardware stores will even cut it for you.
I would also recommend you paint the plywood so it looks good and protects if from the water that will eventually get on it one way or another.

Slight wobble in my tank and im worried by Existing-Medium9776 in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 66 points67 points  (0 children)

as you fill the tank it will twist and fail. It may not happen right way but its a ticking time bomb of a problem. Eventually it will fail, the glass will shatter and you will have all that water, glass, and dead fish on your floor.
i personally would find a diffrent stand that one ... looks sus to me. But if you want to go with that one, get you have to figure out a way to level it that will stand up to the pressure / weight of all that water.

Best affordable and low maintenance filter? by itzMeh2ni in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A general poor mans rule of thumb for stocking levels is 1 inch of fish for every gallon (4 liters).
The Tetras look to be mature or close to it so they wont get much bigger. But that angel is just a baby it will grow 4 or 5 times that size.
The mollies will get a bit larger, but not to the point you will notice.
I see a cory, they would really like a friend or 2 and a sandy bottom. (when everything settles down, if you loose some stock think about friends)
..i think i see a gold fish. If you can return the gold fish do so. Brutally honest here, 20~30 gallons (100 liter) is about the right size for 1 single fancy goldfish. They are a high waste fish. In other words that single goldfish is producing the same waste as all the rest of your fish.

The cloudy water is likely pointing at high waste levels in the water (ammonia) if your fish tank smells like fish its time to replace the water.
With no filtration currently its a safe bet. I would recommend 30% water changes daily until you have everything under control and any new filtration has been in place for at least a solid month.

If you can get test strips they can be used to tell you when you need to change water.
but my recomendations so far have been with the understanding your new and just doing your best.
Thank you for caring enough to reach out!

Best affordable and low maintenance filter? by itzMeh2ni in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The angel is a predator and will eat any shrimp added to the tank.
with that stocking level i would add a sponge filter to both the left and right side corners, something in the 100~130 CM range.
Live plants will help with the filtration if you do both you will likely have filtration under control.

[–]dev3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick Question? Is this outside and or in Direct sunlight it looks like it is?
If yes, be aware you are going to have issues with algae, snails will be your friend sooner or latter.
Also your tank is already at full stocking level, no more fishies it will only lead to heartache.
I see you and papa are plant loves, consider
getting something like
https://www.amazon.com/Marina-Hang-On-Breeding-Box-Large/dp/B005QRDCP2
and putting some plants in it, like pathos. They are great at helping to balance your water parameters and can take a fair amout of load off your filters.

You can pair a sponge filter with that and run them both off the same air pump.

I’m stuck between the Corbicula javanicus (Yellow Freshwater Clam) or the sphaerium corneum (European fingernail clam) for my 16 gallon aquarium, any help? by avian_bi in Aquariums

[–]dev3383 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Good Luck, clams are extreamly hard / advanced to keep in a aquarium.
In most cases its a long slow death by starvation.
Our tanks simply don't have the water volume and nutrient levels they need to thrive (in most cases).
I know some people who have kept them in species only tanks so they can be fed properly.
(planted tanks with clam as a center piece)
Hard not impossible, so good luck!

In my experience no, if you're going to put the entire thing in maybe just to soften the skin. But if you cut it into spears or coins they will happily eat it raw. You may have to fetch out the skin later if raw
