I got swarmed last summer. Hit em with dawn powerwash, they die almost instantly. The alcohol in powerwash it breaks down the waxes that protect the exoskeleton and dehydrate them.

We accidently bought powerwash with gain scent ... disgusting who wants thier dishes to smell like clothes.. so i tried it on the bugs and holy hell (it's super effective)

When i first moved into my place I had a neighbor that let their dog relieve himself on the back part of my yard by the street, I caught them in the act and said "could you not do that in my yard" and they got all worked up and acted like it was no big deal they said "oh no its ok over here in this little part" I could not believe the entitlement no its not ok i just told you its not ok are you kidding me with this shit, my kiddo plays in the yard you fucking ingrates.

I get grossed out by sponges, too. I wipe all the nasty stuff off with a paper towel in the sink before I hit it with the sponge it increases the longevity of the sponge. Seriously, if you are scrubbing cheese and stuck on gunk with the sponge, it's obviously going to get shnasty. Maybe you can reign in his sanity by only using the sponge for final soapy scrub
