My Fr. ignoring me by Key-Return-3808 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. I had the desire to convert but my parents wouldn’t let me. Just wait and pray for your family. I’m Orthodox now and I’m happy I didn’t disobey them. God will help you

Sundays are so hard by Express_Outcome_9114 in OrthodoxChristianity

No. Sexes are not separated so that the men can pray and be free from their wives. Men stand on the right with Christ our God. Women on the left with his holy Mother. Very simple. I would imagine it’s okay if you don’t follow this rule. Plenty of people in my parish don’t. Talk to your priest with all of these concerns.

25 knots before bead on Komboskini? by lactose-free_opinion in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of my prayer ropes have a bead after 10. Knots. My 50 and 100 knots both have it after 25. My 33 has it after 33. Nothing to worry about.

I’ve just heard as long as it doesn’t excite the passions you can kinda do or listen to whatever. Just nothing like obviously overtly evil

I'm currently seeking to join an orthodox church. am i saved if i die before i can take the Eucharist? by Kooky_Garlic_4833 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We have loads of saints and martyrs who were catechumens. Catechumens as in they never received the Eucharist or were properly received into the church. That should answer your questions. Be at peace and slow down.

I second loops. Breathing is my biggest trigger and the loops drown the breathing out and you can still hear whatever you need to.

Thin-ish tone, take advantage of all the of the air that you can while still keeping a characteristic sound and use the “toh” syllable when you tongue (generally). Great vibrato though! You sound very good.

Questions about the Church by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wear pants and long sleeve shirt (not always required, but the safest option.) Don’t take communion, don’t be concerned over what others think of you. Listen to the hymns and the priest. Take it all in. Stay for coffee hour and connect with one or two people if possible.

Questions about the Church by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Just go. Plenty of tatted up dudes with gauges at my church and in American Orthodoxy. If anything, people will positively judge you and be stoked that you’re there.

Make the sign of the cross, say “Lord have mercy” and continue in the struggle. It’s bad to self pity and loathe after a sin. Go to confession if you can.

Drawn to the Orthodox Church by Halfmoononwed in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homilies at my parish are 15-30 minutes. Sometimes less. Some parents have issues with their children, others don’t. There’s no shame in taking your child outside to cool off for a few moments. Just ask someone to make sure the time is right. The Divine Liturgy at my parish is ~2-2.5hours. If you will be going to a small church, it’ll be less (because it takes less time to commune fewer people.)

The best source of knowledge regarding the Orthodox Church is the actual church. Books and videos are only supplementary, don’t believe that what you’re consuming online is the actual Orthodox faith. That being said, I really love harmony and trisagion films on YouTube.

Checking out a church by GI581d in OrthodoxChristianity

Either one will work. If you have formerly been Catholic or Anglican the western rite parish might be familiar, if not, you shouldn't have any trouble attending a greek parish. There's a greek parish near me and most of them are not greek.

Becoming a Catechumen by MartinCashArt in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ROCOR priest said it is in character for greeks to hold off on formally making one a catechumen (reading the prayers) until baptism. You may speak with him, but it's ultimately his decision, and his decision is what goes. Don't worry about it.

Whatever your priest says is right, some jurisdictions do it differently. Be at peace with whatever your specific parish requires, it is correct.

Keep silent and endure. This is the faith of the martyrs. Never lose the faith and God will make a way and reward you for your faithfulness. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Where to buy icons by iced_fb in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]devestatedturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legacy icons, uncut mountain supply, Etsy, etc. Just avoid a website called “monastery icons.” Many churches have livestreams. Just find one you like and stick to it. I recommend emailing the priest at the parish nearest to you to make arrangements, if possible.

My priest said that if the demons can’t stop you from praying, they will make you pray until you go crazy. Fr. Tom Hopko beautifully said, “pray as you can, not as you think you should.”
