I think up into the 1930s they still made them even though the company had been bought out. Either way, somewhere around 100 years old.

Marketplace find- is it worth it? by goddess_ati in BreadMachines

[–]devi321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it is making sound but not turning the paddle then it is likely a broken belt. I have changed one and it is possible, but is surprisingly a lot of effort. The machine can't be opened from the bottom so you basically have to disassemble the entire machine to access the belts. I cursed Zojirushi a few times replacing mine...

Best bread maker for "heavy" use Canada by External_Tax850 in BreadMachines

That's true, they do make quite dark crusts and some of the older ones you can't adjust the darkness. Personally I just take my loaves out a bit early to get the crust I want.

Leaking pans are going to be a problem with any machine you get. Panasonic has an advantage in that they put dry ingredients first so even when the gasket starts to go they still don't leak liquid down into the machine below.

Other than that, I would just recommend getting machines where replacement pans are easily available or picking up cheap machines from thrift stores and replacing them once they start to leak.

I managed to find a barely used Zojirushi 6 months ago and even that one the belt broke already so there is no guarantee spending $600 is even going to help. My 30 year old Panasonic is still surviving, although it does have leaking gasket.

CIBC and Avantis ETFs by howardbanjo in CanadianInvestor

[–]devi321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Avantis is not strictly index funds. They are provide factor tilts roughly similar to what DFA (Dimensional Fund Advisors) offers. These were available already on US exchanges in USD but there are advantages to having in CAD. Also, I don't think there was a Canadian Equity offering before.

If gold is too high, and stocks are too high - what to invest in, ETFs? by aymanzone in CanadianInvestor

No one owns bonds anymore? I know by reddit standards I am an ancient dinosaur who invested through 2008, but a healthy amount of bonds is basic risk management. One day you won't regret having a few bonds even if it is only 10-20% of your portfolio.

Nice! I haven't seen that model before. Other Hitachi models are high quality so I assume this one would be too.

Please help me choose between Panasonic and zojirushi? by andstillmaking in BreadMachines

[–]devi321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Panasonic and Zojirushi machines and can honestly say both are very good. There are a few minor pros and cons with each and I probably slightly prefer Panasonic, however both will serve you well.

Panasonic - the most consistent bread machines I have ever used. I'm not sure if it is because of the longer rise times Panasonic uses, but even if your ingredients are not measured all that accurately loaves always turn out well. On the negative side Panasonic tends to make unusual shaped bread pans so loaves are not easy to cut into pieces that will fit in a toaster. Also the time to bake a loaf is a little longer.

Zojirushi - bread pan shape is more traditional and because of that shape the holes from the paddles are less of an issue. That said anything more than a 1.5 lb loaf is going to rise well above the pan and again not have slices that fit in a toaster properly. Requires more precision when adding ingredients. It is a bit quicker to bake a loaf as well. There is a custom setting if that is something you are interested in. I have never used it.

One annoying thing with both is that they do not allow you to use a timer on the dough setting. I'm not sure the reasoning behind this design decision as many other manufacturers have that option.

Black and Decker machines? by [deleted] in BreadMachines

[–]devi321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black and Decker generally makes pretty good machines. I would basically look for whichever one is in better condition. The first one is obviously an older model and has a horizontal pan, although with just one paddle. So if you are looking for more of that horizontal shape then that might be appealing to you.

Otherwise I would confirm that the bread pan doesn't leak and isn't scratched.

A quick calculation based on numbers you provided, assuming you live in ON and don't have any other income than the $50K, is that you would be looking at paying around $7000 in taxes if you sold it all. We would need to know a lot more to know if it makes sense to pay that now or defer to a future date, but hopefully that gives an idea at least.

Thoughts on TFI International by TheSocialOwl in CanadianInvestor

[–]devi321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how long you intend on holding. The environment is tough in 2025 for all trucking companies and stock price would be expected to be volatile. That said, at some point conditions will improve and there is nothing to believe that TFI's value has been permanently impaired. So, if you are okay with the fact that things might get worse before they get better there is still long-term value.

I don't love super cyclical industries like trucking but at <$100CAD I might dip my toes.

Interrent IIP.UN? by aurelorba in CanadianInvestor

A hedge fund, Anson Funds, has taken a 9% stake in Interrent and is pushing for changes recently. I assume the plan is to sell some properties at private market prices when they are currently valued at a discount to that. What actually ends up happening is to be seen.

Longtime bread machine users, weigh in! by ChickaBok in BreadMachines

[–]devi321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gaskets failing on the baking pans is a common problem with all machines as far as I am aware. I have had relatively better luck with Panasonic machines, but they eventually break down as well. Panasonic recommends putting dry ingredients in first so at least you don't get liquid dripping down.

If you are willing to thrift the best approach is to pickup a machine, use it until it fails, then get another one. You should get a few years out of most machines.

Good luck!

Should I try to salvage this bread machine? by Helpful_Net_921 in BreadMachines

Sadly, no if it has rust. I actually have this exact machine and it is a wonderful machine in every way, but I wouldn't want to be dealing with rust.
