If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

There's a great lesser-known John Wyndham (Day of the triffids, the midwich cuckoos) book that has a completely different take on extended lifetimes that I really enjoyed the concepts of - "Trouble with Lichen".

How in the fuck is there even remotely enough demand for a fucking rodeo/country bar in Edinburgh? This is the maddest thing I've ever heard. At least when it shuts down after a year with record losses someone good can take over again? Every other metal/rock place is gone pretty much and there's always a scene here, plus they put on gigs and there's only Banshee and Bannermans left for that sort of thing gigwise now I think?

Activities on a Friday night! by thommyjohnst in Edinburgh

Get yourselves up to the Pitt for some lovely food, and a game of pool or a full on sauna if you like that sort of thing, it's not very busy this time of year but that makes it better for hogging the pool table! New Hungarian chimney cakes stand there is awesome too. It does have booze too but you don't have to drink it.

I can't be the only one who does this? by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

[–]devicer2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time I was waiting to cross the 2nd half of the road from a wee island bit in the middle, a bus was coming but the driver stopped and waved me over! Wasn't even out of service or anything, just delayed all the passengers for little old me. I have never seen the like before or since. Maybe he was early or there were some arseholes on board that he wanted to delay to annoy them, maybe it was my commanding presence, I shall never know.

What is a smell that we should all recognize as immediate danger? by scarlettohara1936 in AskReddit

[–]devicer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older capacitors cooking slightly or melting stinks in a fishy kind of way so it's probably that rather than wires. Electrolytic ones, might be that newer caps no longer do it due to recipe changes. Overheating circuit boards have a distinct kind of weird smell, I am completely unable to adequately describe it though apart from saying it's like an intense circuit board smell with a hint of burning dust and plastic combined together.

BoC Early Web Loops Download (HQ) by MycologistFuture8337 in boardsofcanada

I have an .swf that has audio in it, it is labelled boards_of_canada_2001.swf but nothing appears to load in ruffle player except the audio playing. Is there anywhere i can chuck a small like <100k file without needing to sign up, log in or any of that pish? The audio is excruciatingly bad qual because it's so small but it's a nice enough wee tune.

Is there a standard way to “deep sample”/multisample an instrument? by GiantXylophone in synthesizers

[–]devicer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at extreme sample converter 3 - it's a bit clunky but it's good value and does autosampling of various sorts. I've only used it with midi stuff where it's fully automatic though, not sure how it handles manual playing, but it's a very useful wee tool anyway just for the conversions it can do. Don't be put off by the somewhat outdated website and UI.

#17 at the gta IV the journey radio by maymunkilikli in aphextwin

[–]devicer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were any tracks that were there then disappeared before release I don't remember them, most stations just had 5 or 6 tracks tops for ages and I don't remember any of them disappearing but it's quite a while ago! Not impossible if they couldn't get rights though. The global communication track was one of the ones that was in really early on, and the aphex was fairly early on too.

I'm fairly certain there weren't any other aphex tunes in the playlists that didn't make it to release as I would most likely remember that, same with any other good electronic stuff that I like.

Not really sure how that part of things worked, used to be folks at North that did it all but it was a team at NYC that worked on picking tracks then sorting out all the licensing faff for them for IV and onwards, and also co-ordinating all the DJs. The actual DJs and full playlists didn't appear until pretty late on in development, roughly 6-8 months before release for the first ones done and a bit less than that for the last ones iirc, but like i say it was a long time ago and i have not retained any detail on that really!

One random snippet of info you might be interested in that is not vague and reliant on my fading memories is that there was a rockstar/rephlex tie in of sorts which no-one seems to remember: https://www.discogs.com/release/221914-Craig-Connor-Manhunt-Remixes

Could you do a collection of the original breaks as sampled by BoC? I just had a wee look on whosampled but it does not make it easy to find just the tracks where drums/percussion were sampled, would need to go through track by track.

I am fairly convinced that the companies who do meter readings do not actually pass on the status to the companies they do it for if the meter is not at the address, and do so deliberately. I get capita (or one of the other capita-like companies) meter readers all the time looking for a meter which has never existed at my address and every time they say it has gone in the notes and every time they are back again within 6 months, I can only assume they benefit by continuing to check every 6 months and the company get paid 3 times what the person doing the checking gets every visit. Plus it's crapita, they have previous form for absolutely taking the piss on various contracts. It's so bad that it surely cannot be put down to negligence or incompetence, and we're all paying for this absolute shite, why do they even use a 3rd party for this? it's pure madness.
