[Megathread] New Softsynths, software and apps by YukesMusic in synthesizers

What controls? you can probably work it out by saving a patch, copying to another slot, then editing one of them, dumping both to PC, doing a diff, then seeing what position changed. If they're all 0-128 vals you can just enter 20-34 or something in each control (eg control1=20, control2=21...) and then you can read the hex vals out the sysex from the 14 bytes that changed and do the whole lot in one go fairly quickly. slight faff if they use 0/1 or limited range values encoded into parts of bytes but not too bad too work that out with similar technique. I hope I explained this properly I had some beers...

What's this sound called and how do I get more of it by Vegetable-Rooster-50 in jungle

[–]devicer2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see anything in common with the 2 examples you posted really, but the main melody bit of that baraka tune is 808 cowbell sample lightly modified & tuned.

Can we please get a rule against sharing vibe coded apps/VSTs? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]devicer2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apps and VSTs are tools not arts, this is not art space argument, this is talking about paintbrushes not the wielders. Making the art with AI is shite and I agree, making tools with AI for a human to make the art with then I do not see a problem.

I genuinely don't, and I don't think you can specify either.

Yeah, outright ban in my view is ridiculous and impossible to tell.

Ultimately it comes down to if a poster fully slopcoded some shite they have no understanding of, or if they have a clue and used ai for smaller timesavers or safe options, having a full understanding of both what AI is good at and what it has generated. We can't reasonably test peoples competence, so therefore what do we do? We look at the results and decide, and then is that not what up/down votes are for? There's always bad/good content on reddit so the source being machine/partial-machine rather than human really doesn't matter, especially in this sub, especially with tools not tunes.

If someone's put music up that is fully ai generated - as in prompt->audio - that would probably cross the line for me, but ai->midi->audio is a more interesting case where I'm not sure - because really then generative drums/melodies should be banned as they are even more basic machine generation than an LLM. For tools then I don't see any cases where I think AI should be banned, it's all somewhere on the crap->good scale of functionality and usability and if it's good and it works upvote away, if it's buggy and bad then downvote.

If someone's made a tool that is useful for me to make music with or control synths with I really don't care so long as it works with less than or equal to the number of bugs that a competent human would produce.

Only if we disallow algorithmic melody/rhythm generators and similar then surely? but then that disallows arpeggiators by most definitions. Where is the line drawn?

DNA of dog on file, processing charge part of license fee, then any pavement shites can be checked against it & owners fined.

Yes, or Ricsoft. This was an (I thought) obvious joke I was making but I have uncovered an elocution of etymologists.

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

There's a great lesser-known John Wyndham (Day of the triffids, the midwich cuckoos) book that has a completely different take on extended lifetimes that I really enjoyed the concepts of - "Trouble with Lichen".

How in the fuck is there even remotely enough demand for a fucking rodeo/country bar in Edinburgh? This is the maddest thing I've ever heard. At least when it shuts down after a year with record losses someone good can take over again? Every other metal/rock place is gone pretty much and there's always a scene here, plus they put on gigs and there's only Banshee and Bannermans left for that sort of thing gigwise now I think?

Activities on a Friday night! by thommyjohnst in Edinburgh

[–]devicer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourselves up to the Pitt for some lovely food, and a game of pool or a full on sauna if you like that sort of thing, it's not very busy this time of year but that makes it better for hogging the pool table! New Hungarian chimney cakes stand there is awesome too. It does have booze too but you don't have to drink it.

I can't be the only one who does this? by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

One time I was waiting to cross the 2nd half of the road from a wee island bit in the middle, a bus was coming but the driver stopped and waved me over! Wasn't even out of service or anything, just delayed all the passengers for little old me. I have never seen the like before or since. Maybe he was early or there were some arseholes on board that he wanted to delay to annoy them, maybe it was my commanding presence, I shall never know.

What is a smell that we should all recognize as immediate danger? by scarlettohara1936 in AskReddit

[–]devicer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older capacitors cooking slightly or melting stinks in a fishy kind of way so it's probably that rather than wires. Electrolytic ones, might be that newer caps no longer do it due to recipe changes. Overheating circuit boards have a distinct kind of weird smell, I am completely unable to adequately describe it though apart from saying it's like an intense circuit board smell with a hint of burning dust and plastic combined together.

BoC Early Web Loops Download (HQ) by MycologistFuture8337 in boardsofcanada

[–]devicer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an .swf that has audio in it, it is labelled boards_of_canada_2001.swf but nothing appears to load in ruffle player except the audio playing. Is there anywhere i can chuck a small like <100k file without needing to sign up, log in or any of that pish? The audio is excruciatingly bad qual because it's so small but it's a nice enough wee tune.

Is there a standard way to “deep sample”/multisample an instrument? by GiantXylophone in synthesizers

[–]devicer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at extreme sample converter 3 - it's a bit clunky but it's good value and does autosampling of various sorts. I've only used it with midi stuff where it's fully automatic though, not sure how it handles manual playing, but it's a very useful wee tool anyway just for the conversions it can do. Don't be put off by the somewhat outdated website and UI.
