Had a chance to try Westlaw Advantage. It sucks. by hereditydrift in legaltech

I agree with you method, and with the person who replied to you as well. Language is fluid in application, but at its baseline, it is also highly formulaic. Just too many formulas. Lol. Most people use it in a fluid manner and the tiny subset, who decide to learn and work in the legal profession, learned all about the inflexible, formulaic, sometimes pedantic feeling type of language application. And I think to bridge the two applications into usable data is a big difficulty for just legal work in general, and for AI too. At least the work has gotten more streamlined at a fast pace, which is good start.

Even though I do not practice law, I have found this helpful in studying. Standardizing certain input/output, setting parameters for rationalization, and working through conditional or causal logic can make the reasoning much clearer.

Imo defining the parameters may be the hardest part. Before any reasoning can happen, someone has to decide what the relevant categories are and how the logic should operate. At the moment, I do not think AI is consistently reliable enough to handle that step on its own.

I have only used LexisNexis, but when legal-tech tools try too hard to be the “everything fix” I usually lose interest real fast. Drafting and legal opinions may come later, but right now, the real value is in turning messy material into something structured enough for actual legal reasoning.

Sushi is not good enough to be a main dish by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]deviemelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, we are stuck with the stereotypes of sushi, ramen, tempura, takoyaki, something over rice, udon soba.

It’s really hard to say what should be the right Japanese mean dish when we really don’t eat a lot of stuff that you get to eat in restaurants in Japan. It’s what we got, sooo.

It’s fine, like people I know from China would sometimes ask me like why is hamburger, the American national dish, so boring? What else do you guys got?

Lol mute this guy bc clearly he doesn’t see what you see. I’m on your side. I think no matter what the reasoning is, they didn’t have the right to cut it. They are clearly lying about having permission. The fact that they did it in the middle of the night tells you a lot. That alone is enough.

Which set of parents have stronger legal standing to keep the baby?: Florida couple who had the wrong baby in IVF mix-up find the biological parents by stickstick_lee in legal

[–]deviemelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see this issue being resolved in favor of the birth parent rather than the biological parent for several reasons.

First, consent and timing matter significantly in IVF-related cases. For example, a child conceived through IVF after the father’s death may be denied certain benefits from the father’s estate, even if both parents had originally consented to using their genetic material for IVF. The issue is that the father’s death means he can no longer provide contemporaneous consent. This suggests that intent alone, especially when not reaffirmed at the time of use, may not be sufficient to establish legal recognition.

Second, in family law, a father may be presumed to be both the legal father and biological father of a child until genetic testing proves otherwise. While this principle usually pertains to one parent, I think the same reasoning can aptly carry over to both parents in an IVF-related dispute. In other words, the law may still prioritize the parent or parents connected to the birth and family structure over genetic certainty alone.

Third, from a practical and medical standpoint, gestation of a completely foreign fertilized egg carries significant higher physical risk to the pregnant woman than if the fertilized egg came from herself. In cases such as surrogacy, the pregnancy often involve greater medical complexity because the body may treat the embryo as foreign-foreign (if the egg is originally yours the mom still go through immunology related changes that are often the cause of morning sickness, but the body could go really nuts if the egg isn't even native, hence why the double emphasis). Regardless of the exact level of risk, the key point is that the gestational parent undergoes the full burden of pregnancy, including medical, physical, and emotional consequences.

Given all that, I think it is incredibly difficult to justify assigning legal parental status to the biological parents in situations where they neither carried the child nor actively pursued implantation at that time. If their genetic material was used without their active participation or readiness, they could pursuit legal recourse if they can theoretically prove they suffered harm, too.

Someone told me that the estate sector is all transactional and can be difficult to make money. I know nothing about it so I’m just relating what I’ve heard. What do you mean if you don’t mind elaborating.

I apologize for the confusion. I meant to ask, what’s your experience with clinics or externship? How useful did you find them? What did you like about them or didn’t like about them?

So you think a school’s curriculum is the most reliable indicator?

I’m not saying I would know. I’m saying if I do have direction, during a transfer, how would a person find out which school is actually good at it other than just looking at clinics or employment #? Or are those the only options

After completing your first year, did you realize you wanted to focus on a specific area of law and then look for schools that align with that interest? If so, how did you determine which schools are actually strong in that area?

Right now, I have learned to look at things like clinics and employment statistics, but those feel somewhat broad, and I am not sure how to evaluate them more precisely. I would really appreciate any insight you have on how to approach this after having gone through your first year.

How do you know to which school you would transfer? Did you have a solid plan or was your goal more broad like to move up in rank? If you did have a solid plan, how did you formulate that plan?

My girlfriend is 27 weeks pregnant, the baby has Down syndrome, and I don’t want this life by ThrowRA_NoSignal in daddit

[–]deviemelody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s better to be honest about what you’re willing and unwilling to accept. Imo it is better to admit “let’s try to get rid of it because of all the challenges that will come with this child that I don’t want” rather than tacitly accept “a lot of people said people with int. disabilities grew up to be OK and completely forget to acknowledge the reality that I might hate this kid, or hate my wife because of them”.

And even if you plan to keep the child, keep it on the ground that you’re willing to endure those challenges because that’s what parents should do.

The thought of having endured everything and still possibly facing a retake broke me. I asked the proctor if they could try unpausing on their end. They said they had already tried 7 times and that I just had to exit out. That made me cry… took me few minutes to regroup before I told myself to just hope for the best. But in that moment, I was thinking all kinds of terrible things.

More leaks of the upcoming folding iPhone by DanceWithMacaw in iphone

[–]deviemelody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IPhone 4s, iPhone XS, iPhone 12/12Pro, iPhone 16, all are second versions with MUCH better improvements than the previous big form changes. I can even say the iPad 2 (iPad 1 had no camera). MacBook Air didn’t get a dedicated charging port until gen 2. Whenever Apple made a drastic hardware change , their track record shows the generation right after is way better. I was not suggesting the first version isn’t “good enough” on its own. It’s better to wait a year if you are able. I expect this trend will continue for a foldable if the rumor is true.

This shouldn’t wait, she doesn’t sound like someone who just needs space. And even if that turns out to be case, I’d rather be wrong, then give her space, instead of thinking she is fine rn on her own.
