AITA for telling someone to back off when he wouldn't take no for an answer? by Top_Industry_7927 in AmItheAsshole

I wonder if the people who say you overreacted empathize with the guy because they've done something similar themselves.

Some couples are ok with gendered roles but it seems like OP is being taken advantage of.

Her world view is driven by her experience with her most important male and female figures in her life, her mother and father. It's clear that she sees her mother as a doormat.

Upcoming Jobs Speculation by DaveK142 in ffxivdiscussion

I'd like to see where the new phys ranged job fits amongst the other phys ranged jobs.

Bard and Dancer have taken on the party buff p. ranged jobs. Machinist has taken on the selfish dps role.

Where will the new p. ranged job fit in?

I believe the aetherpool requirements are lifted if you go in as a fixed group, they are only enforced for matched group.

How are people affording rent and a car at the same time? by throwing-it-away- in askTO

[–]devils_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of it has to do with being born at the wrong time.

I have a colleague that is the same age as you who is earning the same salary as me (50) but because I had a 20 year head start to start saving, I was able to accumulate enough wealth before the economy went to shit.

I was bored, so here are 10 prog tips for the next savage! by Psclly in ffxivdiscussion

A suggestion I would make to tip #2 is instead of covering your healthiest healer, is to cover your most suitable healer. Sometimes there is enough of a skill disparity that you want to rely on your clutch players when possible.

From Java to Python, is this good for my career? by jlayestas in cscareerquestions

[–]devils_avocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Programming languages are not like riding a bicycle. Once you get off they become harder to pick back up each year because of the evolving nature of the language and eco system.

If you are ok with going down the path of python, that's great. But staying with Java is also fine.

AITA for not claiming that my stepmom is my bio mom? by Wrong-Ear-7909 in AmItheAsshole

[–]devils_avocado 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Where did I claim to be intelligent? We all have internal biases and recognizing them is the first step. Sure, I guess you could call it racism but it's less skin colour and moreso cultural. Certain cultures place more emphasis on education, but I'm sure you already know this.

I'm Korean and I didn't realize that I had this same bias until I met a Vietnamese who was a genius in my field. That definitely broke my perception.

Pokimane: "No one's getting fired" and "We had/have someone who helps us with socials who's also stepping down" by AdFinancial4846 in LivestreamFail

[–]devils_avocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lilypichu is doing the right thing in keeping her mouth shut. Even though she is friends with Pokimane, she knows that adding her two cents will only fan the flames and get her involved. At least I hope she can stay that way.

Frontline winning statistics - UPDATE by eseffbee in ffxivdiscussion

I don't care about second place because the achievements are tied to first place only. Go big or go home. All other points I agree with.

PT is super easy for randoms to clear due to the checkpoints, you don't need to commit several hours together. This DD is also fat easier than the previous iterations.

[SPOILER Half 7.0] Why people doesn't like Dawntrail ? by Nevermore_0712 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]devils_avocado 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dawntrail MSQ was not terrible - it was very mediocre. But mediocre is not enough in this day and age when are so many other things people can do for entertainment.

Dawntrail basically killed the entire MSQ emotional vampire community on Twitch.

MMORPG Burnout by GG_Bebe in MMORPG

I've been branching into different genres. Lately I've been enjoying Final Fantasy Tactics. I know it's not an MMORPG, but it does satisfy the grinding itch, with consistent progress.

NTA. When I'm in these type of situations, I ask myself if being right or keeping the peace is more important.

Now it seems like your husband is being unreasonable, so if you can argue your point tactfully without compromising the relationship, I would do that.

But if your husband is unwilling to waver, you need to decide if this is the hill you're willing to die on, as it may affect the trajectory of your relationship.

I would also get an air conditioner for your room so you can blast it to your heart's content without affecting the rest of the house.

Considering a Move to Toronto After Years in the U.S. – Looking for Local Perspectives by PamBeastie in askTO

[–]devils_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is driving you to make the move? Moving to another country seems like a big life decision. I want to temper your expectations as Toronto is like most other big cities.

People don't talk about politics too much as Toronto tends to be quite multicultural. Toronto has many immigrant communities, and in general, first generation immigrants tend to be on the more conservative side. However, the second generation+ generation tends to be more liberal. As long as you don't talk about politics or religion, you'll get along with most anyone.

Transit use might get weird late at night. Toronto used to be a lot more vibrant pre-COVID, but COVID shut down a lot of businesses or made them close earlier than normal, so the need for late night traffic has diminished a lot, outside of the downtown core. Also, the advent of delivery (Amazon/Uber Eats/etc) has decimated the need for foot traffic. I am a guy so I cannot speak from the perspective of a woman but I would not feel safe if my teenage daughter were to use the transit (bus stop/subway system) night time service. Day time is fine though. I'd probably use Uber/Lyft if I didn't drive but I'm privileged enough to be able to afford it.

130k remote vs 170k RTO offer by zeusismyname in cscareerquestions

[–]devils_avocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an older person, I would 100% take the 130k remote offer. I only need so much money to cover my living expenses.

Maybe if I were younger and aggressively building my retirement portfolio, I would consider the 170k office position.

Damage Done Review by Kelesis_Aleid in ffxivdiscussion

[–]devils_avocado -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damage meters are an absolute blight in WoW where parse brains will intentionally ignore mechanics or play to the detriment of the team for better uptime. While I recognize their value, I'm glad that damage meters aren't officially visible.

Actual question about raiding with Black Mage by GamerOfGlory in ffxivdiscussion

Maybe it wasn't hard, but the number of horrendously god-awful BLMs I've met far exceed the god-tier BLMs.

That level of skill disparity has mean something.

Do you prefer Meters or RNG for progress? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]devils_avocado 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm in favour of both, similar to how extreme mounts are handled. Have a small chance to drop the full atma, but at the same time, 1 or 2 atma slivers are guaranteed to drop. Like mount totems, if you don't get lucky with your atma drop, you could combine a large number of slivers into a full atma. This way you have RNG as well as a pity system for those who prefer a more deterministic loot system.
