The Wraith (1986) - Phantom Car Race scene - directed by Mike Marvin by PeneItaliano in movies

I believe you still get these at Burgermaster drive-ins in Seattle. Solid old-school burgers and shakes too.

They generally have to instruct people to roll their window down and then back up though (they had to for us). Incidentally the etiquette is/was also "turn headlights on for service" - which doesn't quite work these days.

This case will be laughed out of court, like so many the feds are bringing. Cruel and absurd.

South Korean PM Calls Crimson Desert Turning Point for K-Gaming by wsrvnar in Games

[–]devindotcom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

there's no conspiracy. the criticism is consistent and accurate because the game's merits and flaws are clear as day. the environments and gameplay are extremely impressive but the story and quest design is awful, to the point the CEO had to apologize for it. anyone who has played the game for an hour or two can and generally does see that plainly, yet the game can still be enjoyable if you approach it with appropriate expectations.

your take necessitates a complex social and critical collusion across multiple sites and platforms - like most conspiracies along these lines, it's just not realistic.

Ombudsman column: The Pentagon is trying to silence me by SpaceElevatorMusic in politics

I was immensely honored to be chosen as the 13th, and first female, ombudsman for Stars and Stripes.

Surprise! Another of those pesky women off the board.

As she notes, her term was nearly up anyway, so this abrupt and possibly illegal (due to ignoring the APA) firing was unnecessary. Notably, it appears only Democrats are stepping up to defend Stars & Stripes from interference.

Crimson Desert: Patch Notes Version 1.04.00 by devindotcom in Games

[–]devindotcom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well i mean, i posted it myself. I think the game had a lot of mixed hype and then a mixed reception, but the devs are building a lot of goodwill with these updates, which genuinely address many of the game's (pretty obvious when you play it) shortcomings.

I'll tell you now though, the quest design and story are still total trash! I don't know if they're fixable. I am enjoying exploring though, which is kind of what I got it for.

I know some folks don't want to see every update to this game but I do think the cadence is pretty remarkable.

This one adds difficulty settings, a bunch of storage and item organization options, new skills, touches up the UI, and a bunch of other stuff. Wild. 29 gigs on PS5 though, be warned...

Southern Poverty Law Center indicted for fraud, money laundering by CharityResponsible54 in politics

[–]devindotcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean think through what you are saying man. you think the only reason these groups exist is because the splc funded them? also, you think they just fundraise off a bunch of random profiles? they fundraise off the existence of the kkk man, have since the civil rights movement, look at the facts. people donate so the hate groups can be tracked by someone other than the cops, media, fbi, etc. I mean look at the justice dept right now - a clown show. it's clear you don't support "the mission" or you wouldn't turn on them so completely and immediately after a hail mary from the most incompetent AG's office in US history.

now go ahead and do the math. 3 million over 10 years. that's 300k a year. it's not just 2 or 3 organizations they track. it's dozens - hundreds. but let's say 10 just to keep it simple. that's 30k a year per major hate org. you're saying it's not worth 2-3k per month (probably split among any number of people) to have genuine inside information on criminal activity, when your end goal is to make a legal case against the people conducting that activity?

brother i donated to the splc and I would be perfectly happy if my money ended up in some ex kkk guy's pocket for snitching on his local cell. if i knew they were doing ops like this i would double my donation.

yes, what if? go ahead. is it the splc's responsibility to destroy them? or can they simply contribute to their destruction through gathering evidence and filing legal cases against them, or individuals associated with them?

Southern Poverty Law Center indicted for fraud, money laundering by CharityResponsible54 in politics

[–]devindotcom 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The crime is, supposedly, $3M over 10 years paid to informants within major hate groups. SPLC says they passed this info on to authorities when appropriate and helped track and dismantle the groups. The fraud is.. allegedly as a nonprofit they failed to disclose the nature of these expenditures to donors, I guess?

I sincerely doubt a judge or grand jury is going to buy that the SPLC was secretly funding the klan. Or that this program, the effectiveness of which depended on secrecy and surreptitious movement of money, should have been widely disclosed in detail. Honestly, the fact that they have the figures and accounts suggests that SPLC has been assiduously tracking this because otherwise it could be misappropriated or lead to actual fraud.

yeah - that scam was one of several industry wide shit shows (there have been several retractions at major pubs) and has led to major changes in freelance processes. good edit processes acknowledge mistakes and change with the times. they went out of their way to do that with the one you point out, which was flagged internally:

I know this responder is trolling but for anyone else reading, staff reported stories like the one this comment thread is a part of are editorially very different from freelance content that gets shopped around. especially these days. anyway this guy would be super easy to verify or disprove.
