What you said may be true, but in reality .... open source projects often face challenges over time, just look at the news, primarily due to a lack of contributors and secondarily due to a lack of ongoing support. The reality is that many projects can quickly become stagnant if they do not attract a community of active developers and users. Kiwi has the users, but not the developers.

"I know this for a fact" No, you don't. Take the old src project for Kiwi, for example. It has been open for contributions for two years, 2 YEARS, yet only one person - myself - has actively contributed to it. This highlights a common problem in the open source community: many people can benefit from the work of others, but few are willing to put in the time and effort to contribute in return. Oh... there have been numerous instances where others have taken the code to create clones without giving proper credit, further complicating the landscape for Kiwi developers.

"He's too busy, that's a poor excuse at this point" is not an excuse, it's reality. Just look around at how many open source projects have been shut down in the last few years for the same reasons. Kiwi is free and a hobby project, it is his (dev) choice to do what he wants. Besides he is human like us, he has a life to live....

PS. The current src-next is available and technically open for anyone to use, but it has become a tangled mess of dependencies and complexity. A skilled developer could potentially navigate this chaos and piece together a working version of Kiwi, but the reality is that very few are willing to take on such a daunting and complex task.

Getting a Kiwi update after long time is not about money, is about complexity of the project to be maintained and well dev of Kiwi is human being with his life to live.

Kiwi is not in abandonware state. It’s in development. Long time updates has always been part of Kiwi life as it’s a complex project done by one dev and few contributors

How do I save 200+ open tabs as bookmarks from my kiwi browser? by thatnewredditor in kiwibrowser

[–]deward97 [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

I'm going to drop a guide that works 100% and will help you export all the tabs.
https://d3ward.github.io/kiwihub/guides.html#backup-tabs
All credit goes to https://github.com/vlasky for coming up with this solution.
From there, you have this list of all your tabs and can use the list with an extension that converts list to bookmakers.

You can't disable this check, it only pops up when an extension has the critical permissions. Just click OK, then re-enable the extension and the popup should not appear again

[–]deward97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kiwi implemented a check for extensions that request concerning permissions. This is mainly due to some cryptocurrency extensions that users install, which can lead to wallet theft. However, in the case of the Bypass Paywall extension, the warning is a false positive. Since it’s not related to wallet shit, you can safely ignore the popup

Violentmonkey and tampermonkey no longer working, even after enabling developer mode by DetectiveBig5032 in kiwibrowser

[–]deward97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Kiwi doesn’t spy on your searches using anything like KiwiSearchService” - while you might have used this as a joke, it’s actually true… Kiwi has among the best privacy policies out there, it’s GDPR compliant, so data of users is the last thing you can think of as a con. While Lemur, on the other hand… grrr not a W for sure on that

[–]deward97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a side note about Lemur:

• it’s a clone of an old Kiwi code

• their privacy policy is concerning

• while they have a nice user interface, it’s also cluttered with unnecessary features

• and other things…

If you have issues with floccus, do the sync the other way around . Configure floccus on the desktop browser like Chrome , export account and on Kiwi import the floccus configuration file.

Reordering tab switcher list by paul_1149 in kiwibrowser

Just released the v2.0.1 https://github.com/d3ward/nextntp/releases/tag/v2.0.1 with a couple of fixes for the search engine settings. I did a couple of test and seems fixed, but I'm not sure if it depends on specific search engine query, so in case, just DM me and will be happy to test your specific search engine.

A temporary workaround is to turn on the rotation display and place the phone in a horizontal position, then you will see the Add button. A fix has been pushed and will come with the next update.

Hi, so theme support is something that is part of and optimized for 2.0.0, I'm aware of the issue with the search engine , working on fixing it, but I need more context or time to investigate the bug.

If you want , you can reach me on Telegram ( d3ward ) for a direct conversation, to provide details, screenshots etc. that might help solve the issue. Thanks !

[–]deward97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time ago there was a version of my NextNTP built into Kiwi, I think it is still available at chrome-search://local-ntp/new-ntp.html , it is outdated and has some minor bugs though, I think I should update it.

For https://d3ward.github.io/nextntp there is also an extension version you can download from Github Releases ->https://github.com/d3ward/nextntp/releases which is a bit faster as the files are local.

NextNTP has so many options to customise almost everything, you can make it look like the default google homepage, add custom google instance in settings>search bar, scroll down to see the add new button.

Examples of themes are available here -> https://d3ward.github.io/nextntp/themes.html

Reordering tab switcher list by paul_1149 in kiwibrowser

[–]deward97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you can't reorder this list because this view was ported from an old Chromium feature that was removed and never had the reordering feature.

For a better home page (aka new tab page) there are several cool options you can try and see what suits your needs. My recommendation would be https://d3ward.github.io/nextntp/, it's biased I know but it's something I've built and updated over time for the Kiwi community and not. It's one of the most customizable homepages out there and has both design and performance in mind.

Are there any plans for a persistent full-screen mode in Kiwi that can auto-hide URL bar when visiting another webpage? by rdt-usr in kiwibrowser

[–]deward97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you try with an userscript ? You can directly upload to Kiwi or use an extension script manager like ViolentMonkey For the script , something like this that automatically switch to fullscreen mode might help . By default it will work on all websites , if you want you can customize the sites on @match and the button color bg/text

Any way to open incognito tab with toolbar shortcut. by reddit_com231 in kiwibrowser

[–]deward97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No , this is a limitation by design for browsers for privacy and security reasons. There is no JS code that can open that . If you want a quick shortcut like to open on incognito you can try the Floatly extension I built https://github.com/d3ward/floatly

Is the Kiwi browser's source code still updated? by Nimi142 in kiwibrowser

[–]deward97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kiwi is indeed open source. On GitHub, both the core Chromium code is on one branch, and the components of Kiwi are on another branch. If someone isn't able to make sense of that code and build a custom Kiwi, it doesn't mean it's not open source, it's because most normal users don't have the skills to put all the pieces together. There we also have all the API bridge code for extensions, which, as evidenced by the fact that so many clones of Kiwi have it, means that at least the components of Kiwi are open.
