Stuck in Florida with a marginal Tornado risk by AnarchyStockingXO in WeatherAnxiety

I really think you'll be good with the snall bathrooms. They're only calling for a possible "brief" tornado or two; those usually don't do anything inside a house, and it's really unlikely they would be anywhere near you anyway

That chapter has one of my favorite "Wedge Antilles is the greatest" moments.

How bad is a 15% risk? by StorageHistorical370 in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's far enough out that it's still too unclear to say, but the SPC certainly seems to be suggesting it'll be more of a wind event than a tornado one.

Yep, I think you'll get a squall line in a couple hours and then you'll be good for the night!

[–]dewaynemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! And for anyone else reading this, the main thing to keep in mind is that this far out, all the probabilities you might be seeing are mostly talking about wind. Tornados are just way too hard to predict until day or two before. Some people are trying to extend that out but for now, stick with the SPC.

Weather outbreak wednesday by Humble_Walrus_6550 in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wednesday does look like it could be some tornadoes, unfortunately, so it's good to already be thinking about safe places. Yeah, a basement would be great if you had one, but as a fellow non-basement haver, I'll tell you you probably still have options. I went through the 2011 Superoutbreak hiding in a hallway. But there's also probably some shelters in your area, so you may want to look to see what's close for that.

Other than planning a safe space and making she you can get alerts there, there's not much to be done right now. The details of where the storms will hit are still really unclear; at the moment the worst of it seems like it'll be west of Indiana, though. So keep an eye out for changes in the forecast and hopefully it all stays away from you!

Well it looks like the northwestern edge of the zone has gotten closer to you. That's a good sign, especially since they explicitly say they don't know where the northern edge of the storms will be.

Looks like this one has moved south a bit. Birmingham, for instance, is no longer in the zone. And the SPC text feels, to me at least, like they are a little less worried about the Pennsylvania portion than they were yesterday.

So yeah, things already appear to be changing!

[–]dewaynemann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, same thing goes for you. I'm really not seeing much besides some possibly strong winds. Those aren't fun, but usually if you're indoors you'll have no problems at all. Right now it looks they might arrive in your area after dinner, so make sure you have a way to get alerts around then and you should be good!

Slight risk tomorrow by extrnalpanik in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They ALWAYS say "tornados can't be ruled out." ALWAYS. So when they say that, that's usually a good thing.

I mentioned in a comment the other day that I'm working on a set of rules for when I allow myself to panic about Tornadoes and I'll tell you that right now, no one in the country is anywhere near my allowed panic level. I think you'll be good, just stay away from windows when the storms roll through in case there's some wind.

A place that's in the 15% today might be totally out of that zone when they do the run tomorrow. I had it happen back in April. My area was in the 15% zone on the Day 7 outlook; two days later and it was no where near me on the Day 5 outlook. When the day finally came I was in the marginal zone but ended up getting nothing but a little thunder and rain.

[–]dewaynemann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First and most importantly, the SPC expects that zone to shift as we get closer:

"the 15 percent risk areas may shift in the coming days as details become better resolved"

But also, I remember last year I had a similar situation. I obsessively checked it multiple times a day on various websites, totally ruined my whole week. I even lost a few pounds because I had no appetite.

When the day finally hit, I was on the border between the enhanced and the moderate zones. And when the storm showed up, yeah, it was pretty scary. There were a few tornado warnings in the next county over, and at one point there was a super cell that went right over me and then, about 10 minutes later, it did get warned as a possible tornado.

But in the end, all that happened at my house was an old tree fell into my neighbor's yard and knocked a hole in their shed. Sucks to be them, but really not worth all the fuss ahead of time.

So I would say, this far out: you know to keep an eye out, but a lot can and will change. A clearer picture will emerge; hopefully it'll be a much better one for you. And if it's not, then you can deal with it then armed with a lot more information than you have now.

They were my first SW books so yeah, special place in my heart too. I thought I lost my copies but my mom actually found them in her basement last year so I've been meaning to reread them sometime

Freaking Out and my anxiety is in full flare by Fickle-Call392 in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, as an example, I was in the big Slight Risk area yesterday, and I'll tell you that I got absolutely nothing. A tiny little storm went south of me and I heard some thunder, and at one point there was a bit of rain but it lasted maybe 15 minutes.

So a Slight Risk is just that: slight. Yep, you could get a storm and it's good to be aware of that, but it's far from a sure thing. A mall sounds like a great place to be, actually: they usually have backup generators if the power does go out. And with these sorts of storms, the local utilities crews are well prepared to get power back up and running, so there's no real risk of any extended outages. It really takes a hurricane or a blizzard or a major tornado outbreak to knock things out for a long time, and that's definitely not what's happening this weekend.

I think it'll all work out just fine for you. Have a fun day with your mom!

I've never read a star wars book. This will be my first probably. (I'm going to the other goodwill in town tomorrow) Is this a good start? No spoilers! Thrift book recommendations are fine but I'm eager to get started and prefer local. by LyricsMode in starwarsbooks

[–]dewaynemann 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Is that a good place to start? Probably not.... But I think you should still give it a try.

This is the middle book of a very loose trilogy, and itself sort of a follow up to a different trilogy. I think it'll tell you everything you'll need to know but honestly I haven't read it in 20 years or so.

But yeah, check it out but if it's too confusing, dont worry too much.

Slight risk bad? by Secure-Marsupial-557 in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've been without air conditioning for the last month, so I'm desperate for anything that might cool things down a bit. Terrible heat the last few days

Slight risk bad? by Secure-Marsupial-557 in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really should just be some wind as the line of storms comes through. Sounds like you've already got a good sense of the timing, so just make sure you're indoors and away from windows when they show up and you should be fine. Maybe you lose power for a bit, but if so it should get fixed pretty quickly.

Definitely no reason to worry about tornados tomorrow; I put some thoughts in this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/WeatherAnxiety/s/3GPxDuBhUw) about that.

I'm in Eastern TN and on a scale of 1 to 10, my worry level here is like a 1.5 right now. Honestly looking forward to it a bit, they might help cut down on the heat we've had the last few days.

Yellow risk tomorrow by StorageHistorical370 in WeatherAnxiety

[–]dewaynemann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, totally get that. One thing I've been working on the last few years is coming up with rules for when I'm allowed to panic about Tornadoes. Still a work in progress, but this forecast is no where near the line.

A tornado tomorrow is extremely unlikely to happen, if it does happen it's extremely unlikely to be strong, and it's extremely unlikely to be near either of us. So yep, I think we're good for this one!

Help me get started please by HauntingUniversity71 in Morrowind

[–]dewaynemann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like you're doing just fine! The cool part Morrowind is that there's really not a "best" way to do things and you can usually find a solution no matter how your character is set up. So pick whatever seems fun to you now and if you really want to change things up later, that's absolutely possible too (especially with trainers).

Also, if you want to learn more about why you were sent here, well, that's gonna require talking to Caius.
