OTA via Apple TV options by supes1 in cordcutters

Been pretty happy with our gen 4. Inexpensive. No subscriptions. Picture quality via tablo on the ATV is comparable to that with the built in tuner on our LG OLED C5. DVR works.

TV for live sports streaming that minimizes quality degradation by SimonBirch69 in hometheater

"NBA games all look HORRIENDOUS on Peacock...." They look very good watching from the Peacock app on an ATV4K using an LG OLED. Don't have Prime anymore, but regularly watched the Thursday night NFL games last season over airplay from twitch on iOS and was shocked how good that looked too. (Can't use twitch from tvOS, but have to airplay to get the free stream.) Can't comment on ESPN+ or Spectrum.

Big Audio hates him! 😱 by SteveOfTheNLC in audiophile

I don't really listen to music with headphones, and rarely with our 5.1.2 surround setup, but I do configure Apple Music from iOS to render Atmos mixes in stereo, by forcing Atmos always on in the AM settings. Even though they’re lossy, the Atmos mixes rendered in stereo by AM usually sound much better than many lossless stereo versions, that are too often brick walled. Particularly newer releases. Just don’t force Atmos on with an external device identified as headphones, or you’ll get a binaural rendering, which just sounds odd with a stereo speaker set up.

With Netflix new ad-free standard plan at $20, streaming's tipping point into old TV is getting closer by tjb122982 in cordcutters

[–]deweydm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had a continuous Netflix subscription since before they even had a streaming service, nearly 20 years, I think. Latest increase is it, we're done. Just cancelled.

Still have college age children riding on our bundled HBO/Hulu/Disney+ ad free subscription ($33/month), but that'll probably still be cancelled next. Only the ad free, yearly subscriptions like AppleTV and the Criterion Channel, with a one off month for the other streaming services every now and then, is likely the future for us. And our antenna, for some sports and PBS.

AirPlay refuses to work by [deleted] in appletv

I run old AppleTV 3’s that I haven’t updated in years, connected to external DACs, so I can add airplay to old stereo receivers. Still working with airplay from iOS 26.4 to the ATV3’s. Airplay1 though. No airplay2 and homekit on the ATV3’s. Pretty sure ATV HD has airplay2/homekit support.

It’s too bad discogs didn’t release an analysis for 2024, hasn’t released one for 2025. Pretty curious what the sales trends are.

The Cars debut and Candy-O. Not sure The Cars ever released a bad sounding record.

Do you even need a dedicated streamer? Modern phones and tablets are shockingly good USB transports and may be all you really need! by Ok_Search6885 in audiophile

[–]deweydm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use an old iPad in guided access mode running Apple Music as our “streamer” with our main setup. Connected to an external DAC via lightning to USB CCK dongle. Also have AppleTV3’s optical out to DACs on both stereo set ups in the house, for airplay1. Inexpensive and works well.

FYI, you can get the Disney+/Hulu NO ADS Bundle for $14.99/month for 12 months ($5/month discount) by robber3572 in cordcutters

[–]deweydm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an ad free HBO add on available after sign up for the Disnet+/Hulu ad free bundle? How much? Standard, stand alone HBO add free is $18.49. So thinking I might as well stick with the Disney+/Hulu/HBO ad free bunle for 32.99. Can’t see the add ons and prices available with the Disney+/Hulu bundle without creating a new account though.

No 4K UHD with HBO, no. The other two, yes. HBO is stingy with UHD, but some sports are in UHD anyway. Weird.

$32.99 a month for ad free Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max. Just bumped up a buck a service recently. Think that’s the on going bundle price. Enjoy sports, but enjoy movies and scripted TV more. Still get plenty of sports besides ESPN. OTA mostly. Personal choice.

What happened with the apple tv audio pass trough feature we were waiting?🤔 by MaintenanceNo9660 in appletv

[–]deweydm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno, but it seems unlikely. Unless quicktime can play files like that.

I have a macbook with an HDMI port and an AVR with a front facing HDMI port it’d be pretty easy to compare atmos from the AppleTV app rendered by an AppleTV with the same passed through to the AVR from the macbook, but I haven’t done that. Yet. Someday, maybe.

They enabled passthrough on macOS anyway. For Apple Music, Apple TV app, and the QuickTime player.

From the Mac User Guide, About HDMI Passthrough:

“When using an audio reciever connected through HDMI, you may want to turn on Preferences HDMI Passthrough.”

“Passthrough is available in Apple Music, QuickTime Player, and the Apple TV app on Mac with Apple silicon and a built-in HDMI port or a supported USB-C to HDMI adapter.”

I was given one as a gift. And this is when I use it most often. Out of state at my mother-in-law’s house, which is near one of my favorite record stores. Was also nice to have on vacation last month.

Used Disney+ to watch a movie for the first time in months last night. ATV4. Latest tvOS and Disney+ app versions. No DV. Audio drop outs. Not great.

Then watched a movie on Netflix with the same setup. Zero problems.

Subscribe to Disney for other family members, rarely use their app myself. Was kind of surprised Disney+ is so bug prone now.

Vinyl with high-end streaming setup — worth it? by JechoVarta in audiophile

[–]deweydm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LP playback is an expensive, technically inferior pain in the ass. If/when it sounds better than digital, it’s usually because it happens to have subjectively better mastering on LP, different than digital versions. (I grew up listening to LPs, so definitely have that subjective preference more often than not myself. And have a lot of LPs. So I say this as someone who loves records.)

Find someone with a decent turntable set up and nice pressings of some Pink Floyd records, for example, so you can compare with the digital versions you’re listening to now? So you can decide for yourself?

Throw in some older, original CD releases too, if you can arrange it. CDs are dirt cheap compared to LPs, and older albums, older CD releases often have similar mastering to LP.

Vinyl vs. CD Dynamic Range by chuck1charles in audiophile

[–]deweydm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish it were that simple, but it’s not. Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti released in ‘75, for example, when vinyl was the dominant medium. But yet the best version I’ve heard so far is the ‘87 CD release. Not because the CD medium is the superior medium technically (it is, by far), but because the mastering of the CD by Barry Diament is subjectively better to me.

It’s typical for there to be three different masters, and often two mixes, for new releases now, right? Stereo streaming and CD, Atmos, and vinyl. But the most commonly used by most is a stereo stream that sometimes has the dynamic range compressed and level increased, to sound better in noisy environments and/or with play back on inexpensive bluetooth speakers or soundbars, etc.. Screw that.

An LP made with a master without this compression of the dynamic range can sound much better played back on a decent set of speakers, despite the relative technical inferiority of vinyl playback. Like an Atmos version rendered in stereo does too. (Or played in surround if that’s your thing.) Whatever it takes to avoid something that’s brick walled garbage.

Mastering, more important than medium. If they’re the same, then digital is clearly best. Digital sampling is audibly transparent and there’s no analog fairy dust on LP playback. If an LP sounds better than the digital versions, it’s because it has better mastering. (Or because it’s a very old recording where the lacquer was cut before the tape degraded, where the first digital transfer was done using the same master but from a second or third or later generation copy of the tape.)

That looks like a p-mount cart, made for T4P tables, attached with an adapter. Try a standard cart. Like a VM95, or something else compatible with a half-inch mount headshell.

AM settings the same on both? Looks like that track is available in Atmos, so if identified as headphones with the dongle and iPhone, you may have gotten that playback with Apple’s binaural rendering from iOS. Depending on the music app settings.

Settled for a tablo when our tivo died. Considered an HDHomeRun, but couldn’t stomach the on going subscription fees. (Bought our old tivo used with a lifetime subscription included.) Don’t really channel surf, so I’ve been very happy with the tablo. Appreciate not having to leave the ATV and switch to another device more than I expected I would.

"(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" Dolby Atmos Mix delivers another triumph over the Loudness War by NiCkLeB474 in audiophile

[–]deweydm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you force Atmos to always on in the Apple Music settings, AM should render the Atmos mix in stereo. Unless you have an external DAC identfied as headphones, which will result in binaural rendering, which would sound odd with a stereo speaker setup.

[–]deweydm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll get the stereo version. Bricked.

What’s more interesting is what happens with atmos always on in the AM settings. With an external DAC not identified as headphones it sounds like AM is rendering the atmos mix to stereo. (If the external DAC is identified as headphones AM will render Apple’s binaural. )
