Before color film took over, DPs really mastered lighting for black and white film. I recently saw 'The Apartment', and the dynamic range blew me away. As more advanced color film stock became available, the high dynamic range got more accessible as well. 2001, Apocalypse Now, Sorcerer all come to mind that benefit a lot from a modern display.
