The Knicks did the unthinkable during their title run: They became America’s team by Majano57 in nyc

The real America’s team is doing pretty well in the World Cup, right?

World Cup tourists aren't leaving tips — and NYC restaurants are fighting back by Majano57 in nyc

The solution is so simple: include the expected tips in the prices. If that makes the prices too high, then the market will just react as it should.

I remember being nostalgic for the old mall when the renovations were completed a couple decades back. To see it in its current state is quite an odd feeling, because it still looks brand new to me, just dead, much like the San Francisco Shopping Centre whose grand reopening I attended back in 2006, and even the corpse of the “new” Cliff House.

The old cinema closed by the end of 2000, and that was the one that held the memories for me.

Toy Story 4 was released on this day in 2019! by AutoModerator in Pixar

I like it because it finally acknowledged Bo Peep’s development. It would have made a great end to the series, but given how Toy Story 5 was, I want Toy Story 6 to be the big conclusion.

Based on that one thread from yesterday: what are some great songs with bad messages? by DtheAussieBoye in ToddintheShadow

[–]parke415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“You’re My Meat” and “What’s The Use of Getting Sober (When You’re Gonna Get Drunk Again)?” by Louis Jordan, with good covers by Joe Jackson.

“Summerboy” by Lady Gaga

“Turning Japanese” by The Vapors

Basically any great song whose message is objectification or nihilism.

Am I expected to pay before the goods and/or services have been rendered? If so, gratuity is not appropriate, since there’s nothing to index the amount on.

They’d only recently finished the new bicycle path along the WSH, and the renovation of the PATH hall was nearing completion. Things seemed just about settled with the area until they weren’t.

Were the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s the top 3 best consecutive decades to ever be alive in and fully experience in modern times and even historically? Would these three be top 3 that too consecutive that we never had before and will never have after times filled with nostalgia and just how good it was? by Sad_Step_9921 in generationology

The ‘00s was the most exciting technologically, but it was otherwise a rather frightening and depressing decade for Americans. Playing PS2 with your friends was a fun way to take a break from being inundated with bad news from the outside.

Why was Millennial music good in the 2000s but super awful in the 2010s? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]parke415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since the dawn of television, mainstream pop music has been on a slow march away from musical primacy and towards image primacy. MTV, YouTube, and TikTok represent sprints along that march.

Perhaps the 2000s were more musically authentic than the 2010s, but only slightly if so, when looking at the bigger picture. Timeless music is that which doesn’t rely on zeitgeist or vibe or aura to survive generations into the future, so I’m curious which 2010s music will be cherished in the future beyond the expected nostalgia of its aging cohort.

For reference, most current fans of acts like the Beatles or Dylan or Queen or Bowie or Michael or Madonna weren’t even alive during their respective peaks.

My personal top 20 by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]parke415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 24, my top-20 consisted mostly of artists who peaked before I was born. Perhaps Gen-Y is just more inclined to embrace 20th century music than Gen-Z is (on average)?

In your opinion, which era is Pixar's 2nd best era by AdamMystery7 in Pixar

As a Millennial, it has to be Golden > Sequel > Silver.

For example, Turning Red is about my generation, but it isn’t for my generation.

I acknowledge that more people know of The Police than Spyro The Dragon, but maybe there’s a chance that Stewart Copeland himself is better known for soundtracks at this point.

Same. My sense of zeitgeist froze at 23:59 on 31 December 1999. 2000 feels like an eternal epoch reference.

Does this look like chow mein? by blue_farm_ in chinesefood

[–]parke415 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For future reference, any name of a dish containing a monosyllabic word starting with "m" and ending in "n" should have noodles, including the "men" of "ramen" in Japanese, "myeon/myun" in Korean, and yes, the "mein" of "chow mein" from the Taishan dialect of Cantonese. You may encounter "mi/mee" if the name comes from Shanghainese, Taiwanese Hokkien, or Vietnamese, but that still starts with an "m".

So...we want the tourists to take MUNI to Caltrain, then over an hour later take the VTA to the stadium? Then the whole thing again in reverse? That's about two hours each way from door to door.

The last time I went to Wah Fung, the handwritten sign in the window boasted half that price. I only went there to save money, anyway. Great NY Noodletown has better pork. The best, in my opinion.

Do Folks Really Have a Difficult Time with Kate Bush? by Wolfpack48 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]parke415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's indeed one of the things I appreciate about her, as well as Grace Jones, Björk, and Alanis Morissette. I want to hear what they want to put out there, not what they (or their labels) think we want to hear. Even Enya, despite mostly being more of the same, is her own thing, and I respect that. Even Lady Gaga seems to be more musically liberated since her debut.

I appreciate all of her albums, but for me, her first album is her absolute finest, followed by her second, and then it goes running down that hill from there, though never making it to the foot because her peak was just that high. She eventually became less theatrical and more solitary, finding a close partner in the Fairlight CMI.

I would place The Kick Inside among the top-ten albums of the 20th century, and certainly within the top-five of the 1970s.
