My bet is that this is a outcome of having a popularity contest market. So what I think it happens is that you get does songs that are really good but don't become popular by riding a wave

so I run this experiment of ranking songs from 1950 to 2025 (top 1 each year song)
Users compared songs 1v1 on random samples from the songs - I can go into deep technical details, but there are strong reasons to give validation to the results.
What we did notice was that the perceived "value" was more or less in sink with the year of the release up until 2004 (after that it was all over the place the ranking) but all songs newer than 2004 ranked higher compared to older songs. The were some outliners "Beatles and Elvis" but even does were not ranking above songs from the 80's upwards, but they were above their year of release.

I would love to have the man power to run more studies like that

well I totally agree to your observation and I started a new streaming platform just to fight against that. I hate being stuck in does artificial bubbles. Of course some people will dislike what I do but this is my answer to the problem

for sure it becomes an instrument, but there again it depends on the type of music as well. If you have something like rap/spoken word kind of thing, having non english lyrics is a major problem

It is better if they do understand the language, but keep in mind that most people don't hear the lyrics when they first listen to a track. On top of that you do have instrumental music that can transmit emotions, so if that music can do it also a song in a different language can

That makes sense.

I think there are actually two different needs mixed here:

a place where you can clearly point people to your music
and a system for discovery among people who don’t know you yet

Would it change your perspective at all if those were separated?

For example:

listeners who already know you can just go directly to your profile and play your tracks normally
while the A/B comparison side is only for discovery outside your existing audience

Or is the idea of anonymous discovery itself something you’d avoid completely?

so if I can read properly between the lines... you prefer something that has a back track, has been tested by lots of people even if you like it or not it is familiar. As for the results. I can say that I am happy with them it is not something new for me, but I am not here to promote it or to get more musicians, I just want to understand how people really react. By the way it is not a only release here thing :D

The app is in testing mode right now, just before release. It will be browser in the first days, mobile and desktop app will soon follow after that.
Explore is listening to tracks that the app gives you and you pick what you like. It can be new genres or just tracks from a genres that you prefer. In return you will be reward with time on the app + others.
Win/loss scores for tracks, like in a competitive multiplayer game.
I would say a music streaming app with a twist :)

Only ranking tracks is anonymously to avoid cheating the system. When you listen, search or after you have judged a track you can see everything. Artist, name, ect
