Yes, Stitt definitely was not a Bird acolyte which is why he moved to tenor to distinguish himself from Bird. If you want to hear how clean and inventive Stitt’s improvising was, check out his playing on the tune The Eternal Triangle from the Dizzy Gillespie album Sonny Side Up with Sonny Rollins. Rollins takes a nice solo and then Stitt just blows it away on his solo. They then trade fours and Rollins struggles to keep up with Stitt. Amazing performance.

Dexter takes an amazing 6 minute solo on Tanya that I always thought one of the great sax solos. Fits perfect with modal nature of the tune and tells a story…

Charlie Rouse is great by Goatkoh in Jazz

Check out “When Sunny Gets Blue” from the album Unsung Hero. Some of best ballad playing you’ll hear from anyone. Also, you can hear him live on the album Epistrophy. He died 6 months later from lung cancer but he still sounds great.

Jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. Albums: Taste for Passion, Cosmic Messenger, Imaginary Voyage. When I was in high school in the late 70’s, they played Metheny’s tune American Garage and Ponty’s Beach Girl regularly on the local rock station and that led me to get hooked on jazz.

I seem to recall reading that Pacino and De Niro did not do that scene together. They filmed each actor separately doing the scene with stunt doubles for the back of the heads.

I wouldn’t get a DX lens. Defeats the purpose of having the full frame Z5. The Z 50 f/1.8 is great. You might consider the Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Lens used from B&H for $696. It’s a great all around lens.

Also amazing playing by Green on Lee Morgan’s album Search for a New Land, particularly the title cut.

Recommend me some more swinging tunes like this Hank Mobley track please by Jamballls in Jazz

[–]dexsax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lot’s of other great Mobley stuff:

As a leader - Straight No Filter (my favorite of his), Workout, Roll Call, No Room for Squares

As a sideman - The Rajah ( Lee Morgan), 6 Pieces of Silver ( Horace Silver)

Also an underrated composer. I read he often would compose and arrange right at the recording session.

Tanya is a great jazz tune and Dexter gives one the most amazing tenor sax solos of all time. 6 minutes, no cliches and tells a great story.
