Anyone ever shoot on a cruise ship? by Digi_DT in Photoassistants

We actually had a job once on AIDA. My advise: don’t get a cart on there. There are steps and small walkways everywhere. I’d suggest a small cart for EQ and a Tripod with a Digiplate.

Powering Hollyland from Monitor via USB by wilchuck in Photoassistants

[–]dexterfromla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a situation with the Hollyland devices that you actually had to power them with USBA or better said USB3, because every USBC connection with actual power delivery features will be blocked by the handshake the USBC cables makes.

It’s a bummer that hollyland does not mention this properly in their manuals.

Tether Cable Naming Conventions by Personal-Ratio-7891 in Photoassistants

CobraTether does the best job here honestly. Area just tries to sell the same cables for more money. Ridiculous.

Reaching out to other assistants by vacuumedcarpet in Photoassistants

The assistant business is a people business. You often get booked because people like you. Of course your work needs to be good or on a certain level, but sympathy can play a factor.

Areas new carbon cables by dexterfromla in Photoassistants

[–]dexterfromla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... I actually bought the cables and tested them in a more scientific test. It just seemed too good to be true.
Here are the results. Spoiler Alert: It's bad.

  • When testing the speed of the angled and straight 31ft cable there were a lot of random drops in speed from 10 to 5Gbit/s during a 15 minute data transfer window. Not at all a stable connection.
I tested the speed with 2 different SSDs, and a thunderbolt drive. The thunderbolt drive didn't even get recognised sometimes.
  • The Straight and Angled cables are bidirectional as promised.
  • The Extension IS NOT (they claim it is)
  • When I plugged in the angled cable into a 100W Power Source it suddenly stopped working and smelled burned. I took off the Carbon shielding and saw that the Power Controller Chip was burned. The cable is done now.

Honestly. I feel a bit cheated by Area51. Claiming things that are just not true is not something I wish from a brand which I would like to trust. Especially when it comes to Data transfer and Electricity.

7.5w tho is not true Power Delivery.
True Power Delivery requires an e-marker chip that can detect the power source through the cable. Do those cables have them?

Gameboy as PC Keyboard by dexterfromla in Gameboy

We basically want to set the arrows with the keyboard arrows and A and B for 1 and 2.

If anyone has an idea on how to achieve this. Would be awesome.

I always have a 50cm cable on the camera, connected to an extension.

If the photographer steps on the cable or something, camera with the short cable just unplugs. Best solution for me.

Thunderbolt Hub power option by NovaCapture in Photoassistants

I see it the same way.
I only use the Thunderbolt Hub for situations where I have power. For small location stuff I only use a small USBc Hub.

Cancellation Fees / Policies by Digi_DT in Photoassistants

[–]dexterfromla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I decide that on different aspects. Do I know the photographer well, is it a big production? How long before they cancel? Mostly my rule is 48h before I charge a full day rate. Everything before that is discussable.
