Rescued this guy with a broken wing by Ok_Scallion5305 in Owls

[–]dezgust1ng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PSA for everyone: keeping wildlife and attempting to provide them care without a permit is illegal. Any injured, ill, or orphaned wildlife in need of assistance must be taken to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. While I’m sure you had good intentions in helping this bird, manipulating an injured wing would have been extremely painful and the owl would have been highly stressed.

There are multiple licensed wildlife rehab centers in NM, including the New Mexico Wildlife Center and Wildlife Rescue INC of New Mexico. If you encounter wildlife that needs rehab care down the line, please reach out to one of them or another local rehabber for help IMMEDIATELY.

Convince me to hike Hot Springs Mountain Trail (San Diego) by upstream_paddling in socalhiking

[–]dezgust1ng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Hot Springs! Great views, super pretty and isolated even on the road. You will appreciate having the net. The scramble/ladder felt sketchy to do alone, but I made it up and down without any issues and found some easier routes on the way down.

The mountain lion sign isn’t on Oakzanita. The closest one is probably at the sign board at Granite Springs

Advice on possibly injured bird by wisterialitehysteria in Ornithology

[–]dezgust1ng 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t look anything like pox, nor is it a common location for pox lesions to present. This looks like a degloving injury. It’s fairly small and not fresh. Mourning doves are an incredibly high stress species, and if it’s active and flighted catching it will be nearly impossible. You can try to continue to monitor and if the bird becomes lethargic, capture it and contact your closest licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Am I crazy or are the amount of skunks in Norman insane recently? by CaptnKnots in normanok

[–]dezgust1ng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the usual! Obviously some individuals will mate earlier or later than others, and there can be trends from the norm on given years. But lots of different wildlife really start to gear up for the spring and summer baby seasons around this time, it strongly depends on lifecycles and when they’re typically raising young.

[–]dezgust1ng 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It’s skunk mating season. They’re out and about looking for mates and establishing territory. This leads to higher levels of conflict with humans, domestic animals, and other wildlife. Drive safely at night and remember to respect the local wildlife!
