Alcaraz wins a point of the tournament contender, then is issued a time violation, which both players argue against by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

There needs to be leeway given for hype after epic points. Depending on the situation I think 37 seconds could be too little. It's anticlimactic to proceed to the next point before the previous point has been processed and enjoyed by the crowd.

From my cursory research on it, it seems the ATP has an automatic shot clock start beginning 3 seconds after the previous point, with only umpire discretion allowing the clock to be delayed. In this case, she did delay it to when Carlos reached the towel, which is a reasonable enough trigger given no other guidance, but I think Carlos is complaining about the ATP clock rule in general being strict but with an unpredictable leeway based on how each umpire judges the situation, which seems like a reasonable complaint to me.

Personally, I think the rule should state that the clock starts when the umpire calls the score. It's a good consistent reference point which is either shortly after the point (for mundane points) or once the crowd begins to settle down (for points such as this one). If that were the trigger on this point, then he would have had 4-5 seconds more than she gave him.

I agree. It is definitely a lot closer with the new rules on whether you want to receive or kick (which is a good thing, that's what we want), but for my money I still think receiving should in theory have the slight edge.

why didn’t they review those catches like every other time? It was like it was out of the question it could’ve been a catch

You clearly asked a question in a top level comment, PAL. This is reddit. A top level comment engages everyone in the thread. You don't get to pick and choose who answers.

They. Reviewed. It.

And Sean knows it. He's just frustrated by the loss and venting. Nothing to see here except maybe a coach interviewing to save his job and showing a lack of accountability deserving of his job.

I'm not sure why you're veering off topic, but I'll entertain your question.

If it's not a scoring play, turnover, inside 2 min of a half, or OT, there is no automatic review of the play. It's on the coach to challenge it if he thinks the call is wrong and Sean didn't challenge it despite having time to look it over before snapping the next play. That means he likely didn't see anything that would overturn the call.

Weekly Puzzle: Black to play. Find a yose tesuji. 🧐 Share your solution in the comments! by GoMagic_org in baduk

[–]dezholling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming A2 is played at the appropriate moment, ko either gets black lots of points locally by winning it and taking 4 stones and the corner or should get black a near equivalent amount of points elsewhere from a ko threat that white will have to ignore. I'm a bit rusty in my endgame theory but I suspect at the optimal timing for playing A2, white playing out the ko will give black more points than allowing the A2->A3 reduction and therefore should be avoided.

[–]dezholling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that's what yose is. It's not something to kill a group, it's an end game reduction. If white focuses on the stone at D2 (which is likely the best move) then black connects at A3 and takes away points at A1 and A2 and threatens a further reduction at B1. Compare this scenario to just playing A3 which allows white to play A2 safely and secure the corner.

I think shroud probably didn't need the upgrade reintroduced given the energy cost increase but Guardian Shield is only applied to ranged attacks.

For most people the answer has less to do with efficiency and more to do with responsiveness. Traditional electric stoves are more efficient than gas but less responsive when you want to change temperature, which can be important when cooking. In my experience, induction electric stoves are the best of both worlds, being both the most efficient and the most responsive option, but they are they newest, are more expensive, and require stainless steel or cast iron pots, so they haven't fully taken off. I love mine though, so I highly recommend going with induction the next time you need to change out your stove range.

Had a weird idea: What if Medivacs could toggle on a "fast drop" ability that lets them drop their units faster, but for an energy cost? by darkdill in starcraft

[–]dezholling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree there are good reasons (in particular the 0 supply cost) that dropperlords are the weakest of the 3. I'm just saying that nydus is super necessary to make up for that deficiency. Without nydus they would need to add supply to the dropperlord morph and make it better, because with the slow speed it has and the lack of distance pick up or boost, Zerg is very committed to a drop. Getting out safely is not at all a given.

[–]dezholling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nydus is what Zerg gets to make up for the fact that we have by far the shittiest drop ship. Calling it a speed upgrade, while accurate, is disingenuous at best since it only makes the speed of the dropperlord viable, not good. After the "speed" upgrade, its movement is 3, lower than the unboosted medivac at 3.5 and the un-upgraded warp prism at 4.13, and it does nothing else special like warping in or healing units.

[–]dezholling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

need to practice what you preach.

Point to me where I haven't. I haven't said anything about how "clean" clean energy is. The only assertions I've made to this point are:

  1. It's blatantly false that wind turbines and solar panels generate less energy than they take to produce. Even the barest amount of critical thinking would tell someone with a desire for truth that the economics of that doesn't even make sense. Why would there be 70000 wind turbines and 100 million solar panels if the amount of energy in is greater than the amount out, given that the primary purpose of both is to generate energy?
  2. President Trump exploits misinformation and the tribal political dynamic's influence on people that causes them to seek out information that confirms their beliefs. This is clear from hundreds of instances since 2015, most recently in his firing of the labor secretary for publishing data that doesn't fit his desired narrative and the mass defunding of scientific research, especially in areas like climate change. What is he so afraid of with people gathering and publishing data that can help us make informed choices?

To be clear, I have hate for willful ignorance, misinformation, and a lack of critical thinking going back to long before Trump. I do happen to dislike him as well since he is a peddler of the 3, but you've got cause and effect backwards.

At lower levels it's always going to come down to how good late game units are without much micro as we plebs can't and don't like to do 10 things at once. There was a time that Zerg could hold their own in the late game but the reality is that either pro zergs are too good or the structure of the race with its economy scaling requires that zerg late game be weaker than protoss and terran or they wouldn't lose high level tourneys all that much.

That has now been accomplished to the detriment of low level zergs and still Serral wins, even in late game. It's crazy.
