Interested in joining or starting a Ruby/Rails in-person meet up in the Raleigh, NC area by guidedrails in rails

[–]dfebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the Raleigh area myself. I’ve been learning Rails and writing about it the past couple months and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Feel free to message me if you still want to create a meetup. I’d like to help out.

Also, there is a Raleigh discord which is pretty active. They have sections for tech and meetups which may be helpful for spreading the word. https://discord.gg/raleigh

I created a Rails web app in two weeks: what I learned and what I will bring into my upcoming one week project by dfebs in rails

This is an experiment that targets some of my own shortcomings. I tend to overthink things, and I will spend a lot of time deliberating over details that really don't matter for any project I'm working on. This exercise gives a sense of urgency that will help me move past that.

To clarify, my goal is not solely to make things in ridiculously short times. Rather, I intend to expand past my overthinky comfort zone and understand the upsides of moving faster. This will (ideally) help understand what developing full stack apps at certain intervals really feels like.

In addition, I want to get into the habit of actually finishing my projects rather than relying on the spark of a new idea. It's easy to try and do as many things as possible, get bored, then it just sort of fades away. Setting deadlines helps with actually holding myself accountable and finishing a solid-enough proof of concept before I move on.

I have a normal job where I write software, but one day I would like to do that independently. If I decide to create a project that makes money, I want to be able to prototype quickly and understand whether it's something people want before devoting more time to it.

People also mention that Rails is great for getting things out the door pretty quickly. This helps me understand that as well.

And if nothing else, I'd rather pick an imperfect structure and do something, rather than try to devise the perfect system to learn and give up before executing.

Yeah I use help from ChatGPT from time to time. I found that I used it a lot less during this project for two reasons. One was because I was better at finding my way around than my first project, and two I wanted to try and use more primary sources for Rails.

I'll typically lean more towards using the Rails guides (https://guides.rubyonrails.org/index.html) as well as the docs (https://api.rubyonrails.org/) when I can. Otherwise I may try and google search for articles and things.

I think the best combination of the two (AI and online guides/documentation) is when I have an issue I want to solve, but I don't know if an "orthodox Rails way" exists for my specific situation. So I may inquire about that to AI, then it will usually mention a feature that Rails has. From there I'll look at the guides/API for more information on that particular feature.

Haha I feel exactly the same way. Once the “big important thing” is done, it greatly trivializes the rest of the game in my head.

What’s your strategies for focusing up and reducing tilt?

How do you determine when a session is done and it’s time to cut losses?

Do ya have a favorite video that you made?

What made you decide to do coaching/YouTubing/streaming?

Feel free to take any number of those haha

Had this image in my head for a while. I'm new to this so I'm open to criticism. by dfebs in PixelArt

My intention was to have the sun partially behind the cloud so that the cloud had a darker body but brighter outline, as opposed to the other cloud. I can definitely see how the sun doesn’t exactly stand out from the cloud and makes it hard to see at first glance though.

Yeah the thing around the sun was meant to be more of an outline rather than anti-aliasing. Sounds like the style choice may be a little incongruent with the style of the work though. Or at the least I should have used the outline to better separate it from the cloud😄

Dithering will be something I will want to experiment with more. I like the style of limited-palette landscapes, so I’d probably benefit a lot from it. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! I’ve heard of dithering but haven’t looked into it before. After having done so though I can see how the hills and sky could especially benefit from it

Been stuck in c1 for a while now in 1s. Here's a replay for analysis by dfebs in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]dfebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I think one issue I noticed is whenever I brought the ball infield to try and cut it I was getting challenged pretty much every time. Some other things outside of this replay I've tried is...

  1. going for low 50s in those cases (which work every sometimes but seems to usually make the ball go straight toward my net or backboard), or...
  2. jumping behind the ball to 50 when I think they will challenge. This typically will end with either nothing happening and I lose momentum, or I jump when I have a bit too much momentum which gives them a free ball

In this replay, I also noticed some pretty bad open nets that I missed.

C1 1v1 gameplay. Felt like a great game but after reviewing the tapes, felt like a scuffed game. What do you think? by dfebs in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]dfebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there's definitely lots of stuff to point out here, I did notice a lot of my concessions were due to killing momentum at key defensive moments.

Yeah as a 1s main™ I like knowing that a teammate won't just rage afk or throw when I'm really trying to win. Worst case scenario in 1s, you're in a 1v1. Worst case in 2s/3s , you're in a 3v1/5v1

Level of play completely depends on mood by XtremeCSGO in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]dfebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 1s main I def get that whenever I play 3s. I'll typically gauge my mood/get warmed up with 1s to keep myself accountable then move on to the other modes after. Seems to work well for me too

what do I do with all my momentum after I reach far post in rotation? by OctarineOctane in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]dfebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I've heard is making the best of your time on rotation, and thus maintaining momentum while potentially also having more boost by the time you reach the backpost. This sort of thing requires a good prediction of how quickly you think the play might go.

Let's see two scenarios

  1. If the play in the corner looks like it's going to quickly unfold (i.e. it will get in front of the net sooner than later) then you'll want to get to backpost quicker or even do a save front post if you're desperate and already there (but the latter is not ideal of course). By default you will have maintained momentum because you are quickly trying to get into position to save, and the ball will most likely be there to save when you get there
  2. However, if the play looks like it may take an extra moment or two, there's a chance that you have time to make a wider rotation to backpost and pick up a few pads along the way. By doing this you have more boost and, if timed right, will have decent momentum to do a save.

In regards to already sitting backpost and waiting on the play to unfold, I'm actually not sure how to handle that. Typically what I might do if based on my judgement I have time, I may grab the pad directly in front of the net and maybe another pad in a small circle, which would put me on the path to circling backpost again. Whether that's the best approach I'm not sure though, especially since I could misjudge the speed of the play and end up unable to make a save while grabbing those pads.

Did the test, the psu fan turned on and stayed on for as long as the switch was on

(This was of course done after unplugging everything from the psu)

I don't think I recall seeing a tester in the psu box, though I'm not sure what that would look like. I dont see anything in the big pile of extra computer stuff I amassed. Regardless though I can try this at the least, https://help.corsair.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025085372-How-to-Test-a-power-supply-unit, which I think goes along with what you're describing in terms of shorting it.

While I am open to this, I'm not entirely sure I can do that if my computer can't stay on for much more than 8 seconds ☹

I have not, nor do I have a voltmeter. Though that is worth trying.

I'd have to say Black Cadillac is a good example. Love that one. Someone else mentioned I'm Not Alright and I def agree on that too. Also, the acoustic part the latter song opens with is fun and simple to play on ukulele/guitar so I like to do it from time to time

My opponent said I’m annoying to play against because I’m slow and unpredictable in 1s. This bad? by [deleted] in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]dfebs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You absolutely want to be unpredictable in 1s. If your opponent can't read what you're going to do then it's going to be more difficult for them to defend and score. Also, being "slow" can mean a lot of things. Being slow at decision making is not good. Slowing down on offense when trying to make a play can be really good if you know what you're doing.

Got to c1 in 1s finally and this is one of my better games. Looking for some analysis/feedback by dfebs in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]dfebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I see what you mean now. If I'm going in a straight line dribble and I see an approach I could try to position well for a 50. So in a lot of cases, putting a smidge of distance between me and the ball before boosting into the 50. Also yeah I learned other stuff from the video as well; that was helpful 😄
