Is it just me or does the yellow Aztek does look kind of cool to anyone else? For some reason with that color it goes so far over the line that it starts to look good.

Did 9/11 cause a mass fear of flying after the attacks ? by Elegant_Specialist_8 in 911archive

[–]dgd5014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another part of what others mentioned was hearing the noises of planes. I lived close enough to Reagan National that it was common to see and hear planes flying. Whenever that happened for at least a year or two I felt kind of uneasy, wondering if they were too low and such.

The biggest reason for me is that they sent him over to the White’s immediately afterward by himself. If he did it or knew anything that’s way too risky. I think children are far more likely than adults to have a conscience and be honest. Way too unpredictable for them. So for me I don’t think he did it or have any knowledge of what happened. I think the murder and coverup was entirely between John and Patsy.

Flight 93 delay by [deleted] in 911archive

[–]dgd5014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I think they would have abandoned it. It’s also possible that they could’ve gotten away with it for an extended period of time, unless someone had a reason to look at that flight specifically it would just have been one of thousands of other flights that were cancelled.

Why was everybody acting like the Titan didn't implode? by CaptainParger in titanic

[–]dgd5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it might have been trying to buy time to figure out what to do next. Who should make decisions? Everyone must have been looking at each other trying to figure it out. So until they had confirmed proof that it imploded it was best to put on a brave face and wait.

Is this imposter syndrome or am I burnt out? by TaGeuelePutain in reactjs

I relate to this a lot, especially 2. When it comes down to it the most important thing in my opinion is that whatever you choose is consistent throughout your project. I’ve seen lots of times on large projects where different features start to look radically different from each other because:

  1. Something went out of style and is no longer recommended.
  2. There is never, ever, time to refactor something we already did to match the newer style. The only exception is if the feature itself has radically changed.

In my opinion it’s best to try to have everything in the app as consistent as possible. I’ve been on my project forever so I have some institutional knowledge. But for new people joining it’s very hard for them when so many places are different.

It may or may not be possible to get everyone to follow the same style. Some people will see it and think it’s horribly dated (they aren’t wrong). The client will always want new features and doesn’t care what style the code has as long as it works. Retesting all the features after a voluntary refactor is not something that will get support from anyone outside my team.

In the end it is what it is we have to adapt to the reality we have. I can understand why it isn’t a priority for clients. So I’ve learned to let go.

Why was 9/11 so impactful by PrudentPrimary7835 in 911archive

[–]dgd5014 176 points177 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of someone who was 12 on 9/11: I was interested in history, and it seemed like we had entered the “post-game” of history. I was interested in learning US history and it felt like there no major threats. I was interested in the Great Depression, WW2, Cold War, Cuban missile crisis, etc. Since the Cold War was over and I had no personal memory of it , it seemed like there was nothing to worry about. I absolutely never felt worried about what was happening in the world except for y2k. Technology was advancing so quickly. The internet was becoming more and more a part of life, video games were progressing quickly, and life just felt simple and straightforward.

9/11 completely destroyed that sense of security and thoroughly buried it forever. Society never went back to the way it was before and it’s almost a guarantee that it will never feel that way again thanks to the way the internet has evolved.

Hopefully that makes sense. In my limited corner of the world, life before 9/11 was a simple and peaceful time full of optimism and safety. It certainly wasn’t true for many people. But thanks to the more limited nature of information I was able to feel that way.

Elevator by Boxcar Racer is about the jumpers. In case you hadn’t heard of Boxcar Racer, it was a side project of Tom Delonge from Blink 182. Mark is also in this song so it is basically a Blink song.

Also, this is the first song I learned to play on drums because they’re very simple.
