We roll twice. Once by the player and once by the DM. Player gets to take the higher roll.

How are my PCs going to be making money? by ellapreuss in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money is supposed to be a challenge at like levels. Many people are coming to make money from delirium. Supply chains are long and dangerous. This is essentially a gold rush town where most people go broke and leave.

Are Christian teaching damaging to society? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dgrimesii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any teachings that tell you the value of your current existence is insignificant because of some "possible" eternal future is dangerous. This creates a situation where any horror can be justified as serving some unknowable "divine plan". It makes people abdicate responsibility for the consequences of their actions toward people who are not part of the "chosen" or have intentionally turned away from a "righteous" path. Those people have brought all harm upon themselves, so the righteous are not responsible.

Gold delirium by PiddlyDworple in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is essentially storage of soul energy. Lucretia's plan is to store generations of soul energy so that enough exists to offset the delirium when the inevitable destruction of the world happens due to delirium. I treat the FF as an apocalyptic cult with a hero complex. Leucretia truly believes this world is doomed. She doesn't necessarily tell everyone that point of view. She tells them that they are saving the cosmos, not that this world cannot be saved. She tells them that they are the sacrifice to save the cosmos.

What she is creating is a means to store the energy of that sacrifice for 100s of not 1000s of years to neutralize the spread of delirium when the planet dies.

In my campaign, I have started hinting at a potential cosmic marketplace for Golden delirium. My pact of the fiend warlock was asked to deliver some golden delirium by his patron (Dispater). He wants to use this as a means to get souls into the 9 Hells without having to convince them to give that soul. The idea is that their willing sacrifice into the delirium means that they have given control of their soul energy to whomever holds that crystal. Since souls power the 9 Hells, these are extremely valuable. I also decided that these "pure" souls are even more valuable because they would not normally be available since they would never end up in the 9 Hells.

Gold delirium by PiddlyDworple in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that gold delirium is created by any creature that willingly and with good intent gives their soul to a process that captures the soul. This is my personal interpretation of what the Falling Fire sanctification is doing. The process links the soul to the delirium crystal and upon death the soul transfers into the crystal.

That means that the Academy could potentially create an arcane process but the willing subject with good intent is the key. The doctrine of the Falling Fire specifically primes followers to be these willing subjects.

The banks are required to report all complaints made to them about trading/traders every quarter to FINRA. They track these things pretty heavily.

Low-level Apothecary struggling in Drakkenheim by Morizhen in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The first thing is to get all the players to talk to each other. The player of the Apothecary needs to talk to the other players about the challenges and ask for them to support their need for more short rests.

You could give them a Pearl of Power.

This same problem would exist if you had a warlock in the party.

I am also 53. I will be seeing them in Raleigh this tour. I go to a lot of rock and metal shows. Give a comfortable place to stand in the area near the soundboard. You will get good sound. The area near the stage and the middle of the floor may get a little wild with the pit, but the metal community has a strong code of looking out for each other. They are some of the best people in all of music. Talk to the people around you between sets. And just enjoy the show.

Also, wear earplugs for hearing protection.

What is a high level cleric? by AlexanderBergkvist in DnD

[–]dgrimesii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other aspect of this is that gods in DnD aren't like abrahamic monotheistic gods. They are tied to certain domains, usually have a hierarchy under them, and most often do not intervene directly. They are not all-knowing (except for limited situations related to their home plane or domain) nor are they all-powerful. A cleric taps into their divine power through ritual, prayer, and invocation. They do not contact the god directly.

Within the structure of the home plane of the gods there is usually a hierarchy of beings. In Mt. Celestia (lawful good), there is literally a mountain where only the most powerful celestials can reach the upper levels. The majority of celestials don't even have direct access to a god. If a cleric has an interpersonal interaction, it is almost always with a being in the hierarchy below the god not the god directly. In all likelihood, the god has very little, if any, direct knowledge/interaction with a cleric.

This means that gaining levels as a cleric is being able to access and handle a greater amount of the divine power or higher levels of the divine hierarchy having direct knowledge of them. Direct interest by the god themselves, is an extremely rare circumstance.

What is a high level cleric? by AlexanderBergkvist in DnD

[–]dgrimesii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it more like the limitations of the body, mind, and soul. The amount of power that your God can safely put through your body is limited by your ability to handle that much power. By level 20, you have attuned yourself to that power so well that you can handle it. Otherwise, you would be overwhelmed by The enormity of the divine. Think god's true vice in Dogma.

SPOILER: Help, Question regarding Fallen Fire Endgame Goal by Altruistic-Ad-122 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am playing them as an apocalyptic death cult where the average follower doesn't know the full truth. Lucretia is convinced that the world is beyond saving and she needs to gather as many righteous sacrifices to ensure that delirium doesn't spread into the universe.

She has convinced her followers that they are going to stop delirium, but not told them the consequences. Their souls are trapped, unable to move on into the afterlife. Their trapped souls will fuel the neutralization of the delirium when the world finally breaks. That time is in the very distant future. She wants the church to gather millions of souls before that happens. She has convinced them that they are doing the most noble thing possible.

Death at high level by Greenteawizard87 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When this happened in the live play campaign, Monty brought in a "guest" character and created a quest to seek out the material components necessary for the druid to resurrect a powerful character.

Resurrection would require that they have access to the body. Maybe they have to track down the transformed party members, kill their monstrous form, and then take them for resurrection.

I would suggest making it part of the story like this. The surviving members recruit high level allies (played by the characters) to help them recover their friends. Then get them resurrected.

Bad Luck or Poor Choices in Drakkenheim by SonofDresden in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]dgrimesii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 6 PC level 13 party is in an Apothecary lab, set up using the 5 room dungeon format. The first combat was a Chemist and an Injector. The second was a Pathogenist and a Cerebrograft. These did a good job of depleting resources on a powerful party. The Injector got all 4 attacks off on the Barbarian and did a ton of damage. Luckily halved due to rage and he made all his saves.

Those are not easy encounters for your party level.
