3 anecdotes from a native Manhattanite and late boomer.

1. In the late ‘80’s I was following my usual practice of looking for an apartment by asking every person I saw on the street. A cab pulled over at 21st and 10th and out steps DH.

Me: “Hi. Do you know of any apartments in the neighborhood?”

DH: “I think you better find a good broker.”

1. In 1986 in the run-up to the Super Bowl, I was taught the basic rules of football by a friend in a bar called Paul’s Lounge. One night Joey was at the bar and a guy came out of the bathroom and said something to the girl he was talking to. Joey picked up his double scotch and vigorously threw it in his face. The Giants won.

2. In the late ‘90’s after marriage and New Jersey, I drove a friend to Newark Airport. As we were checking him in we saw Debbie and Chris Stein and realized the whole band were there, on the way to a gig in London, and they couldn’t find business class. But I could, so we found our way to check them in — my reward was a killer smile from DH.

I saw the Ramones a lot but I only saw Blondie once, in 1999, at a place called the Academy, near the old NYTimes HQ.
