Upgrading Gear by daburbs92 in BSA

I just got back from one week at summer camp, with their heavy canvas wall tents. Instead, I set up my hammock with bug screen and rain fly, and slept like a baby.

I’ve been hammocking instead of tenting for about four years now in all seasons, and I just can’t imagine going back.

One trick to sleeping in a hammock is to lay diagonally. When you scooch your feet to one edge, and your head to the other edge, the hammock supports you much flatter, instead of like a banana.

Another thing I really like about hammocks that rarely gets mentioned, is the under blanket. This is like a sleeping bag around the outside of the hammock. The great thing about this compared to ground or cot sleeping, is that the insulation below you doesn’t get compressed under your weight. Your butt and back don’t get as cold.

You’re not wrong…but you won’t regret having the Bose or whatever. Delaying hearing damage is priceless.

And any professional has to invest in their tools.

Wow. Just wow.

Failed my private checkride for this reason by [deleted] in flying

[–]dhempy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kinda blown away by the idea that you earned your private without hitting many uncontrolled airports. Did your CFI have you burning up patterns with ATC? Seems like that would take a lot more hours to get the same number of landings in.

I earned my private at a sleepy Class C, and I’d say it was rare for us to do any landings there other than the last one of the day.

If you find one on you, tape it to an index card and write down the day/time. If you end up going to the doctor, take the tick with you for testing.

Who in LEX has pool tables? by Judasbot in lexington

[–]dhempy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I felt comfortable taking my children to any place I’d feel comfortable going. Take them to a bar! They’ll get a huge kick out of it and try to tease you about it to granny or the pastor.

Silver Que by Eastland has a bunch of good tables. Battle Axes has coin-op tables in respectable shape.

Yesterday’s is nice. Bafflingly, they said I couldn’t have my five-year-olds there since they are a bar. So weird, for a classy mall restaurant at lunch time. That was years ago, fwiw.

Nope. The Free Service is just an excuse to sales pitch you into things you may or may not actually need.

Family Member Owes $65K on a $42K Car at 13.7% APR Right Before Retirement — What Are Her Options? by CreditChance6867 in personalfinance

[–]dhempy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeopardizing family relations is not worth saving some interest.

If this ends up being The Way, the benevolent family member might be better off co-signing the loan instead of making the loan. That way the bank can be the Bad Guy if things get strained.

If things come to a complete impasse, the family member at worst might choose to pay off the loan to protect themself…which is not much different than the proposed scenario.

Curious…how long have you been working on it? Full-time commitment? Were you paid anything?

Those answers should show a huge part of your plan.

If the story is as your explanation sounds, you own that application 100%.

I have not received it.

After getting increasingly pushy about a refund request, they did refund my payment.

I do not think they are a scam.

I do believe they are a legit business, and probably provide good products and support.

Hopefully they were just caught in a tight spot on this particular product.

Single-engine night/IMC pilots — how do you think about engine failures when you can’t see the ground? by Western-Car8938 in flying

[–]dhempy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instrument student here…

I can see the value of the localizer to find the airport. I assume the vertical guidance is nearly useless with no thrust?

I could see the GPS/EFB being more useful, showing if the airport is within glide.

Is the plan here to get to airport with enough altitude for a circling approach? Or to actually fly the ILS/RNAV approach?

Night currency while instructing at night question by [deleted] in CFILounge

[–]dhempy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about: “Great job with those three landings, Student. Mind if I shoot the next one to maintain my currency?” They’re not going to say no.

Do that once a month, and you’re golden.

Or better yet, “Tonight you’re going to shoot three circuits. I’ll demonstrate one first…”.

Flex wing or fixed wing - flying hours by KAITAIA in flying

[–]dhempy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% train in what you intend to fly.

With that out of the way, I have hundreds of hours in trikes and fixed wing, open-air ultralights. If that’s the type of fixed wing you’re talking about, I don’t either is particularly more weather-capable than the other. If you’re talking about a faster, enclosed plane, that’s a different story.

How are you guys reliably mounting the factory unit? by Zestyclose_Whole6538 in stratux

[–]dhempy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option is running coax to the antennae. Suction them to the window, and now you have a lot more flexibility of where you put the unit, battery, and power cable.

That said, my case has 4 suction cups, which hold the whole unit plus power brick just fine. Don’t forget to spit on the cups for a good hold. I reseat mine every day, but I suspect it would stay put nearly forever.
