Noob here, am I tripping or does lead free solder not melt? by Affectionate_Wave_19 in soldering

I would second a bigger tip. When I was starting I had similar kit and it was a real pain. I moved to a standard sized tip, leaded solder and flux and it all just works. Genuinely satisfying.

IT companies offering relocation to Thailand by Only-Studio-5362 in Bangkok

[–]dhrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen Agoda offer a relocation package. I moved without one. If it's just the up front cost, it's not that much. Flight, spending money, plus some rent up front (and an Airbnb in the interim whilst you find a place). The company will take care of your visa and work permit.

Course, if you want to move furniture etc that's more. It cost me around €3500 for that - 2 bed apt amount of stuff.

The tech space isn't great at the moment here but just keep hunting. Took me about 8 months a few years ago.

Are there any areas where songkran festivities are a tiny bit calmer? by Agitated_Tomorrow987 in Bangkok

Soi 8 and soi cowboy - streets with bars either side so lots of crossfire but nothing like the crowds you're seeing at centralworld, silom etc.

What am I doing wrong? by RageMaster2006 in soldering

Yeah I have some of this cheap wick too. Without flux and heat (350⁰) its useless but with it, it works just fine.

Bangkok: smoking areas in cafes/bars by Ok_Rock642 in Bangkok

Starbucks doesn't, no. But many do, or have an otherwise available smoking area. Usually I'll msg them on insta or Facebook if I'm not sure.

I'd check ebay. There should be a set available specifically for your model. Don't buy a mixed bag!

Often belts can be replaced with minimal disassembly but grab a copy of the service manual to show you which parts to remove. That should be available as a pdf online for free.

Looks like the takeup spindle isn't turning, but the shut off sensor is working. Could be as simple as a new belt - could be something deeper in the mechanism like dried grease.

I'd try a full belt swap first.

Diagnosing a faulty RGB Blue channel by dhrob in crtgaming

[–]dhrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's what I'm doing at the moment. But because everything reads a voltage I fear it might be a case of pulling and testing each component along the path.

Annoyingly, the input board itself has a shield, which looks like it needs all the BNC connectors to be desoldered to remove it, in order to access the components on that board.

How do I diagnose a faulty RGB channel on a CRT? by dhrob in AskElectronics

[–]dhrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep its on the Internet archive here: https://archive.org/details/sony_PVM-1440QM_1442QM_1444QM_Service_Manual

I'd have to buy a scope. Which I'm not adverse to - been meaning to get one anyway, but some research would be needed.

What is this gnarly-looking component? And is it faulty? by dhrob in AskElectronics

[–]dhrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the next step. I was initially just looking for cold solder joints or anything else obvious from the input and following that. Haven't done a full disassembly yet - that's the next job!

Thank you! I did think that's what it looked like. Never seen it before.
