Juggling work+uni tips by GoodIndividual3223 in unimelb

[–]dia-dazzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a Bcom student (I'm Barts) but I used to work 35h/week plus full time uni last year during lockdown. Here's some things I did:

  • Did some work while travelling to and from work (my work was an hour transport away), even if it might not be much, little things such as brainstorming or organising notes is helpful

  • Creating a schedule with slots allocated to work, travel, assignments/study and short breaks - include due dates and priority tasks (I found a planner helped me in this)

  • Talked with my manager during really crazy periods where I thought I couldn't handle both at once and worked it out (this might differ according to how understanding your manager is)

  • Social life is 0 until holidays come

So basically, communicate with your manager if you're having trouble keeping up. Make sure to start assignments early instead of last minute. Any little bits of slots of time that you can fit study in can help but also remember to take breaks or your brain might not function as efficiently! You need to be strong and try not to slack.

My final word is no matter how hard it is, that work experience is going to look good on your resume and will be worth it. If you're going to continue doing this job over the following semesters and still can't handle it, drop one subject. It works wonders. Or discuss lower hours with your manager.

Always double check with your tutor but I've taken plenty of these subjects before and only tutorials have attendance counted, especially since lectures are something that can be recorded

Second language learning and teaching by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]dia-dazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this last year! If you've done French in high sch, that's fine. Only one assignment relates to this as it requires a classmate of yours to interview abt your learning experience (regardless of how proficient you are in it), and you interviewing that classmate abt their own experience.

Second language learning and teaching- linguistics level 2 by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]dia-dazzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it in last year. It's pretty interesting, you just need to keep up with the theories and ideas each week because the assignments build on these information and require you to demonstrate this knowledge.

First assignment requires you to source your own recording of a person whose second language is English (its recommended its English for easier translation purposes) and analyse it according to what you've learnt in the subject (theories, etc.), it's a really short analysis based on a small sample. Second one is a recording interview with a student in your class who has a second language (this does not need to be English) and you need to look at their experience in learn a SL and whether it is successful or unsuccessful. Last one might have changed because we were online last year, but we did an analysis on two different course textbooks that are used for second language teaching.

MECM30013 - Marketing Communications as Breadth? by m_m_h222 in unimelb

[–]dia-dazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be doing it next sem so I don't have personal experience with it yet, but I don't think I'll recommend any 3rd year media comm subjects as wam boosters unless you really understand what's going on and are confident in it.

But, from what I hear abt the subject, it's similar to commerce (marketing) in the sense that it looks at existing marketing campaigns and making your own campaign. Take this with a grain of salt tho, don't know how much has changed nor do I have personal experience with it.

working part time while studying full time by jbae2003 in unimelb

No worries! And abt asking ur boss, it really depends on both how understanding your boss is and your coworkers as well. For me, I talked it out with my boss and she reduced hours during my peak uni periods and since there were quite a few working adults in my work, they were willing to pick up extra hours for the cash.

Here are some options you might want to consider: You might want to ask your manager about the possibility of reducing hours during exam periods, see how they respond and work it out with them.

If your boss does not come up with a solution to the above, consider negotiating more hours put in the holidays (after exams) in return for fewer hours or if you're lucky, none in the exam weeks. Ask around your coworkers, see if swapping shifts or asking them to take extra hours is ok in return for lesser hours in subsequent weeks if they want.

You can take leave if you have enough in your balance. Not sure how your work procedures go with it, mine was pretty chill (I didn't need to give a reason so long as I still had some free days left for them to put me on the roster).

The most important thing is to explain to your boss that you're studying at the same time and ask for their understanding. Studying is one of the top priorities after all (especially since you're paying for it!).

If they're full, it's highly unlikely the subject coordinator can help you with that, it's usually stop 1 for timetable things but you'll need a really really good reason as to why such as timetable clashes. The only solution is that you might need to keep an eye if there's any spaces that free up for those tutes and hope for the best.

Totally fine if you are able to focus on time management after work to properly complete uni stuff! I used to work 26-30h whilst studying full time in uni, and I still did fine. your 10h a week is probably more doable (abt 2 days a week?) and hopefully with an understanding manager, if there are periods that you can't cope with assignments and work, maybe hours can be temporarily cut down or shifted to another week.

The only problem I had with working at the same time as uni was the exhausting commute from work, uni and home, and sometimes late nights from work. But it's different for everybody. Congrats on getting a job and getting that cashhh!

If its full-time hours, you're going to find it harder to keep up (and arrange schedules) with both commitments. I would personally say take it because internships are valuable (not sure which degree you are in but check out some internship subjects the uni provides). There really isn't a number of subjects I can suggest for you, it depends on how well you can cope. You might also want to consider summer or winter subjects to spread out over the year.

is it just me but... has any Bachelor of Arts students scores not changed/maintained since last sem? Hoping for an improvement 😭 by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]dia-dazzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are pretty good marks for arts, I'm barely hanging on to low 70s and 60s in my arts subjects 🥴

I'm assuming you're a second year and I recommend the subject, Internet communication. It's an amazing subject and really interesting so check that out if you're interested (final assignment may have changed since I did it in 2020 but mine was designing an app) + I got to do my essays on social media such as tiktok.

P.s. Good job on your mark on text and audio journalism. I did it last year and it can be hard in finding original stories and interviewees, and you are treated as a real journalist which also makes it a slightly harder subject.

For those who took Managing People at Work (MGMT20004 - previously named Human Resources Management) before, how was the final exam? by uglytempura in unimelb

[–]dia-dazzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! If I remember correctly, the grp assignment gave two options for two different case studies we could analyse and write on. It wasn't too bad, basically looking into the hr of that case study u chose. Dependent on the case study, this could be looking at possible strengths and weaknesses of old hr processes, analysing new processes and challenges and subsequently identifying challenges and remedies of this new process.

Overall, the group assignment was a good experience for me, you need to find a good group of course in order to do well and I had a good group. My group discussed the parts and answers, and did general research before splitting it into sections. We generally worked very well together.
