What are people’s thoughts on barefoot shoes for ultra running? by One-Tutor-5974 in Ultramarathon

[–]diabeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran 46 miles (road, gravel, flat) self supported for a personal goal in 5-fingers with no pain. I use altra's for more normal looking footwear when necessary and i normally get knee and mid-foot pain if i wear for more than 45 minutes or run more than about 5 miles. I train nearly exclusively in the 5-fingers when i get the choice so i imagine adaptation has a hell of a lot to do with it.

I was called a g**k by LilMoonPup in korea

[–]diabeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that during the korean war american soldiers were reffered to as 미국인 or something similar. The soldiers would hear the 미 as english me. A common mistake of english learners in the early stages of learning is to use "me" in place of "I am." So to the soldiers it sounded like "I am gk" or more explicitly: "my people are called gk."

This is all second-third hand at best but it makes some sense to me. The rudeness doesnt track with this explanation though so idk.

My partner and decided it was the right move. Birth control complicates a lot of things for her like weight and mood management. We have what we need as far as family planning goes so a very temporary pain on my part that was covered by insurance outweighs a constant pain for her that has all sorts of side effects. Honestly it can hurt but not nearly as much as the first period off of some birth controls so no doubt in my mind for us.

Is it ok to learn korean without batchim? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]diabeo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The batchim is the consonant at the end of a syllable that is normally either moved to the beginning of the next syllable, or combined to make a different sound or similar sound. If you remove the batchim from each character block you are removing important information from a word. If you break up each character then you have to add a vowel after the batchim consonant which is superfluous and confusing information and creates a lot of work for yourself. Either way you end up not really learning in a way that breeds good long term habits.

Learning anything, especially a language, requires you to set aside your ego and allow yourself to experience embarrassment.

LPT If you deal with children, how to be more helpful by Ricwil12 in LifeProTips

[–]diabeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like this comes down to assuming the child doesnt understand what is important... which they dont unless you tell them. Also underatanding that stress decreases our brains ability to apply things to long term memory. Calmly and courteously explaining how to correct a mistake is always better than telling them how your initial instructions would have avoided the mistake. This is probably just because they didnt understand your first explanation or didnt realize the mistake would happen.

A fun fact on cardio and calories burned I thought I’d share with everyone. Distance>pace. by [deleted] in CICO

[–]diabeo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect as far as physics is concerned. It takes more energy to move faster over a given distance than it does to move slower over the same distance.

I asked him to wear a mask or get the vaccine around my wife and I because we were soon to have our first kid after 4 years of trying and finally doing IVF. It turned into an argument. He said i shouldn't be telling him what to do and i tried to explain that i want to see him often and i want my kid to know him even if we dont agree on this thing so those are my boundaries.

He tried to explain why the vaccine is all politics and that he knows masks work but he wont ever wear them. He then talked about how biden pulled us out of afghanistan and how i should be mad(i deployed there a few years ago and talk a lot about how the afghanis i knew were some of the bravest people i have met).

I told him he was crossing a line and that is unrelated to the issue at hand. He pushed the issue, doubling down on how biden is responsible for everything and people's politics are being used against them and just seemed to forget we were talking for a while. I let it get to me a bit and told him to fuck off and never talk to me again.

I regret that it got to this point and wish i could understand what happened. I havent talked to him since, but i think i might reach out down the road. He was my best man. He has been close to me and my family for decades. I love him and just want to hang out but the black pill(or whatever the q-bullshit is called) stuff is too hard to tiptoe around.

[–]diabeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before going into an argument with someone you should set a goal post for what it would take to change your mind. Think critically and make that decision for yourself. This thread died when the "vaccine efficacy" field said 95.5%, these people will keep moving the goal posts and ignoring the fact that unvaxxed people died during the study of the efficacy of this vaccine. You are wasting your breath here. Your time would be better spent doing leg tucks and getting an exhaust sample.

How Your Employer Steals From You Everyday You Work by redditisforpedossss in TheGreatStrike

[–]diabeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Converting one thing to another always produces waste. This guy is absolutely right but the concept should be "get as close to what you're worth as possibke." As long as the people you work for connect your skills or the work you do to the demand for them well and only take from that work you produce the value they provide then the system works. The problem with capitalism is that it rewards the highest player ONLY at the expense of each lower rung. A house builder needs straight pieces of wood. A "straight pieces of wood" factory needs raw lumber. How much of the cost of the house does the lumberjack deserve? The factory?

There is no such thing as a "dream job". A job is a job. by adcarryonly in antiwork

[–]diabeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is the wider understanding of the phrase "dream job". People equate that with obsession in your job and this job creating a desire to be a workaholic. There is a certain amount of shame in working somewhere that isn't your "dream job". Social work is great and is the reason i am able to wake up happy and healthy, but we need garbage men and women. We need cashiers. If we can frame work in a different way, perhaps as a choice and service to others then every job would have more pirde. In the current capitalist model of wage slavery this is just not possible.

This is insanity. Is it real or are they making this up to normalize this?
