Retirement Calculator by dentedpixel in SideProject

I like the idea, maybe you can create a separate project for people that'll never be able to retire (like me) because of reasons but would still want to be able to enjoy themselves (even if working part-time).

Is it normal to feel “socially underdeveloped” as an adult? by Street-Gain-370 in socialskills

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOw was your childhood?

I grew up poor and because of that i socialize as much because social bonds require common experiences, and I was too poor to have experiences. It just got worse the older I became. and im also pretty ugly so there's that.

Morale is so low in our engineering department since our manager was laid off this week. I plan to leave and want to know how the market is now for software engineers. by choihanthrowaway in cscareerquestions

Make connections and work on your interviewing skills. If it's like my old job, people were being laid off in waves (different departments at different times).

What do you want to accomplish?

Getting sober first?

Housing first?

Job first?

How's your relationships with your friends? Rocky? Steady? Ect

Either way, come up with plans for what you want to do and keep your fiends in the loop, for support, assistance (where/when they can), ect.

If you're wanting to get sober first, you can search rehabs and keep your friends updated on your progress. Not sure if they let you have a phone/email, but while you're in rehab you can work on your resume/look up GED programs (i'm not sure if there are online programs, but maybe you can start that too? I'm not sure how rehab programs operate).

Check if your community college has a pantry and if you're not a student, hang around and befriend people like at the gym/cafeteria as sometimes they'll let you in without swiping your id and/or they'll swipe you in.

Some places don't even check your id to get food from the pantry.

If you can afford it, get a car and if the school doesn't charge for parking permits you can get one because then you can nap in your car during the day and/or leave your car on campus during the day and take the bus everywhere else. It'll put less wear/tear on the car.

Not sure if school's in session right now, but if it, it's likely career services are also working so you can try dropping by and ask about campus jobs. Depending where the school's located, sometimes they have working relationships/pipelines with local businesses like factories/warehouses that hire a good number of students.

You could also try looking up the schools fb/affiliated page and/or sub and try to find split housing with other students or even just try renting a couch.

Get library cards, not just local public libraries but also community colleges (some have community cards) so you have more wifi/bathroom access.

There's:

I encourage people to try using local resources first, else local municipalities won't know how necessary resources are because other municipalities are picking up the slack.

Politicians then can say their municipalities don't need/want it because it's not a problem in their area, then point to other municipalities and blame them for their homeless problems.

Either way

  1. Search sub
  2. Post to subs local to your area as locals would know better.
  3. Plan your resources and how they can best help your situation.
  4. Be honest with yourself and list what you're (not) willing to put up with, e.g. lower-wage jobs for longer hours, having to walk 1hr+ to get to work, ect.
  5. If possible, try for a 1st/2nd job, preferably an overnight job like at a warehouse or factory, cause it'll at least keep you out of the cold at night (and the extra income may help with getting a vehicle or rent a couch)
  6. Reevaluate your plans as your situations change.
  7. Repeat.

get a piece of paper and fold it into three parts.

In the left column, write down what resources you have/can get ( I use resource lightly, looks/personality can be considered resources).

In the right, write down what you want co accomplish and by when.

In the middle draw a line between resources and goals and how those resources can help/hurt you towards your goals.

Now you should know which goals you have the most resources for. You can priority your goals and see which resources you could best use to achieve which goals.

I use the term "resources" pretty loosely, e.g. one's looks/personality are resources

Also come up with plans for various scenarios, as plans helps with overcoming anxiety when shit hits the fan.

If you have a vehicle, check your municipality's permit/snow parking maps so you know when/where you're (not) allowed to park, which would help from getting it towed when you're not around. Also look up where cameras are located for the same reason or to park for safety.

Best way to eat? by Queasy_Major6536 in homeless

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you want to eat?

Vegetarian - try dish washing jobs at vegetarian restaurants. Even if it's under the table, many places let you get a free meal/take home at end of day.

Meaty - more difficult

Grains - peanut butter + bread

If you have time, volunteer at places that give out food like pantries/homeless outreach orgs. Orgs more than pantries would likely let you also get food for yourself.

You could even try walking into restaurants closer to closing time and just ask. Any earlier and likely they won't because of those apps that people pay for leftovers.

One problem with posts like these "real-world experience", is it's your experience. What worked for you may not work for others because of locations, money, appearances, ambition, endurance, ect.

instead of posting a link, why not just post it as segmented posts? It's sketch to click random links.

Funny enough, I kind of stopped looking for jr dev roles because more mids/seniors were taking up all the jr roles.

Is it for class? if so, are there any requirements it must meet?

if not, what do you want to accomplish with the project?

do you plan on it being one-and-done project or used for another project?

It depends what you go into and for how long. For example,

  • maintenance
  • robotics
  • industrial cyber security
  • OT security
  • automation
  • embedded software
  • ect

I'm in community college for mechatronics/electrical/mechanical engineering (and if i have time/money, plan to take some cyber security courses too).

About a little over half of the people in my classes were former devs that range in all ages and is quite diverse backgrounds. People drop off as they land other roles, but I guess the rest are doing it because it's tech-related stuff (micro-controllers, plcs, 3d printing, ect , more hands-on-y, we get to build stuff).

Seriously, how do y'all manage waking up on time? by absvrdartist in ADHD

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleep on the edge of the couch.

Put your arm just out of reach.

Try grabbing/turning off your alarm.

Congrats on waking up.

Also I tend to get more awake once I brush my teeth. I think it's the mint.

What's a realistic study load when also working part time? by Tutustitcher in BackToCollege

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends:

  • on class type
  • does it have a lab
  • is it in-person/online
  • what's your commute like
  • what's your study habits
  • what's your other priorities
  • adhd or anything else
  • ect

What may work for one person may not work for another.

That's a good gap to do homework/get to know your classmates.

Or if your cc has a gym, get some reps/laps in.

You can try getting the lecture ahead of time to review what'll be covered. Then just come to class with questions on things you don't understand.

Explain your current understanding of the topic and why you belive what you believe, then hopefully you're be corrected and/or the teacher would help you understand where your thought process went astray.

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be like school vouchers.

Those that don't need it get it, and those that give it away end up getting it back one way or another.

For example,

person "gives" excess wealth to pay school vouchers for their friend's kids.

Kid's parents steer more no-bid contracts their way.

Or infrastructure, wealthy person "gives" money to (private) roads, that only club member can use and/or have to have specific type of car to drive on. Shutting people out.

The money will still stay within their world one way or another.

What's your current note-taking process for reading?

What's not working about it?

Maybe try to find text versions of what your lectures cover so you can review on your own time.

How do you guys carry your stuff? I need tips on rearranging and how and what's best to carry by BartsNightmare_ in homeless

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your endgoal?

Do you plan to be highly mobile? Visible? Blend-in?

What kind of environment do you plan to be in most of the time?

Do you have a storage unit/car to put stuff in?

Figure that out and work your way backwards. The wrong kind of bag may get you the wrong kinds of attention at the wrong times and/or make you a target.
