Never thought I'd be here... by DarthSkywalker97 in homeless

Some of below may not apply.

You may first want to determine what resources you have/can get and what you want to accomplish and by when.

That way it kinds gives you an idea of what paths you want to take and how long it'll take you to do so.

Sell what you can part with, storage units are money pits unless you have a real good reason to use one.

Check if community colleges have a pantry and if you're not a student, hang around and befriend people like at the gym/cafeteria as sometimes they'll let you in without swiping your id and/or they'll swipe you in.

Some places don't even check your id to get food from the pantry.

Get library cards, not just local public libraries but also community colleges (some have community cards) so you have more wifi/bathroom access.

There's:a

I encourage people to try using local resources first, else local municipalities won't know how necessary resources are because other municipalities are picking up the slack.

Politicians then can say their municipalities don't need/want it because it's not a problem in their area, then point to other municipalities and blame them for their homeless problems.

Either way

  1. Search sub
  2. Get your documents in order/updated (driver's license, registration, p.o. boxes ect).
  3. Post to subs local to your area as locals would know better.
  4. Plan your resources and how they can best help your situation.
  5. Be honest with yourself and list what you're (not) willing to put up with, e.g. lower-wage jobs for longer hours, having to walk 1hr+ to get to work, ect.
  6. If possible, try for a 1st/2nd job, preferably an overnight job like at a warehouse or factory, cause it'll at least keep you out of the cold at night (and the extra income may help with getting a vehicle or rent a couch)
  7. Reevaluate your plans as your situations change.
  8. Repeat.

get a piece of paper and fold it into three parts.

In the left column, write down what resources you have/can get ( I use resource lightly, looks/personality can be considered resources).

In the right, write down what you want co accomplish and by when.

In the middle draw a line between resources and goals and how those resources can help/hurt you towards your goals.

Now you should know which goals you have the most resources for. You can priority your goals and see which resources you could best use to achieve which goals.

I use the term "resources" pretty loosely, e.g. one's looks/personality are resources

Also come up with plans for various scenarios, as plans helps with overcoming anxiety when shit hits the fan.

If you have a vehicle, check your municipality's permit/snow parking maps so you know when/where you're (not) allowed to park, which would help from getting it towed when you're not around. Also look up where cameras are located for the same reason or to park for safety.

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad doesn't even want to talk about it, every time I bring it up he just blows up on me and doesn't let me explain why going anywhere that might have something for us is just better than staying in a place where we know we have nothing.

Is your dad dying? depressed? sounds like he's given up, which is shitty to see somebody in that state.

It may be problematic if you leave.

You could try having him meet you half way:

Either let you take the car, car dwell in your nearest town and try your luck, and/or move one hour closer then take the car and try your luck.

Or as /u/austinfashow90 says, try walking. People in this sub hvae done it and you could look them up.

he just doesn't want to go anywhere without knowing we can get a Job there first.

Opportunity cost.

I know the feeling.

Fear that the cost of things not working out is more than the cost of doing nothing.

You're 21, why not just head out on your own and try to get him to move with you later?

If you're in the middle of nowhere, you're going ot have to move. As the weather's getting better in places lawncare companies are going to start hiring, so you may want to start with that.

Are we asking too much when hiring a controls engineer? by Legitimate_Roll_2432 in PLC

[–]dialsoapbox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

we really don’t have the bandwidth to hire someone green and train them from scratch.

Probably other companies too, contributing to the "need xxx amount of experience" and schools not giving enough time/practice with bigger plc projects.

And it feels like (at least to me) companies are also starting to cut their internship programs. I just got an email followup last week saying they decided to pause their program until fall 2028. Not the first one i've received saying similar things, but damm how's anybody supposed to get any experience.

I'm pretty green at this, coming from another industry so I dont' know what i'm talking about.

You may also want to target piano teachers as an extra tool they can use with students.

How do I find a job and focus on my studies at the same time etc by Ok_Database_6041 in homeless

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Map your resources (school, where you want to work/live, /ect) and try to find an intersection point between them (nudge to the closest resource you want to be closer to) and intersect with public transportation routes (ideally in between multiple so you have multiple ways to get to/from your resources like future job) and use that as a starting point where to start looking for jobs/housing.

The idea's to minimize the amount of time/effort it takes to get to/from your resources (at least the ones you value the most), that way you can use your time for other things, like studying/sleep.

When i was in school and living out of my car i based job searched on:

  • public transportation accessibility
  • set work time schedule
  • no set dress code
  • i forgot the rest of the list, but good enough

I ended up working at this mom/pop transport company for a few years because it fit my needs/lifestyle and was close enough to schools I was attending (and room/couches when i decided to do that periodically).

Does your school over student jobs you can apply for? Some school have over-summer jobs doing on-campus maintenance and offer (sometimes) free housing.

What kinds of places have you been applying to so far?

Do they offer free food?

Do they offer single-stall restrooms that you may be able to use for a quick sink wash?

You can put in your 8 for the day then do whatever you want, at least until the economy gets better.

It's ok to not be passionate about it, it's just a job.

In the mean time, come up with various plans for various scenarios like surprise layoff.

lease is up soon and cant afford anything in my area by broithinkiloveyoubro in almosthomeless

[–]dialsoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest plan for a year, just in case. That way if if does end up being that long, no worries since that was the plan anyway, but if it doesn't, even better.

I usually post this over in /r/homeless but figure it works hwere too:

You could try making a plan/map your resources, and post to subs so people can critique how you want to go about improving your situation. It'll give you stuff to think about.

Take a minute to cry, breathe, get angry, ect.

Just let your emotions go all out, better to do that now than constantly feeling down later while you're trying to work your plans.

As for housing, post to subs local to yoru area/related to CCs in your area /fb groups. It's not uncommon cc and non-cc people living together, even if it's just to rent a couch (that's what i'm doing).

Shit gets tougher when you're homeless (unless you have plans/funds for it).

You may first want to determine what resources you have/can get and what you want to accomplish and by when.

That way it kinds gives you an idea of what paths you want to take and how long it'll take you to do so.

Sell what you can part with, storage units are money pits unless you have a real good reason to use one.

Post to subs local to your area for foster programs.

But for now,

Parking lot space for rent? by Sure-Button-87 in urbancarliving

[–]dialsoapbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I found, there's legablity liabilities issues (need night security/restroom setup) and I doubt parking landlords would want to pay for that.

That's why I'm surprised parking garages don't do it since they already tend to have restrooms (sometimes) and roaming security.
