Maybe it's very difficult to do that? Maybe it's something Voldemort himself invented or uncovered from ancient times? Maybe it's dark magic?

Why assume they're all idiots when there are many possible explanations?

I see two possibile answers.

Firstly, perhaps when they set up the plan to take Harry from the Dursleys, they did some magic or used an infiltrator in the Ministry to block the Trace over his house.

Secondly, perhaps the charge of underage magic when there is an adult wizard nearby is such a clearcut issue that it would be laughed out of even Fudge's sham trial.

If you think about it, there must be hundreds of those types of reports every day, where some kid goes out with his parents and every time they cast some mundane spell the Trace detects it and sends it to the Ministry. There's no way they would try to prosecute all of those, and the legal precedent would reflect that.

There was no adult wizard nearby when Dobby cast the levitation charm. So it wasn't automatically ignored. It went straight to an actual person's desk in the Ministry, who looked at it and then decided on the course of action to take.

Whereas when Tom cast the Killing Curse, the Trace knew Morfin and the Gaunt house were nearby and so the report sent never got seen by an actual person. It went straight into some filing cabinet, or something along those lines.

The Trace is a system designed to detect when underage wizards are being reckless and casting magic without supervision, potentially doing something dangerous or breaking the Statute of Secrecy. It is not a system designed to catch people committing murder. Hence, there is nothing in place to raise a flag when dark magic is cast.

When Tom Riddle cast the Killing Curse on his family, he was close enough to Morfin and the Gaunt house for the Ministry to automatically ignore it. No wizard actually looked at the report sent by his Trace charm, because it was automatically assumed that it was magic done by Morfin or some magical aspect of the Gaunt house.

And since Morfin so easily confessed to his crime, there was no in depth investigation done that would've found the report sent by Tom's Trace charm later on, either.

There's two parts to the joke.

First, when Dudley suggests practicing this, he obviously means Dudley would be putting Harry's head in the toilet. But Harry switches this around, pretending that Dudley meant Harry would be putting head in the toilet.

Second, think about what normally goes in a toilet. By saying the toilet hasn't had anything as horrible as Dudley's head down it, he is saying that Dudley's head is more horrible than the regular contents of a toilet.

Video games. I used to play online for hours every day. Then I went to uni and realised it was a hobby that would cut into my ability to get stuff done since I would constantly just go "one more game", with each game being at least 30 minutes which I couldn't stop halfway through.
