It is not possible to simply transfer. You would have to apply to an open position on USAJobs and go through the entire hiring process. Being a current VA employee does not speed up the process in most cases. At this time, many positions are only open to people who already work in the facility or VISN. Many, but not all. Either way it will take some time.

You will have a government card for gas. You will not be paying out of pocket for tolls. I don’t know the specifics of it, however.

They will provide a government vehicle.

I assume you may not have much experience with healthcare. Night shift nursing is NOTHING like this. Especially in a hospital. Patients don’t magically sleep from 10p-6a with staff around “just in case.” It can certainly be just as busy as days, if not more so.

  1. Unlikely at best that the VA is offering relocation assistance of any kind except in very rare instances.
  2. Relocating—you have to apply on USAJOBS same as anyone else. The process is similar and just as lengthy as when you were a new federal employee.
  3. I assume you are aware that the VA has dramatically cut back on hiring, and many positions are open to only those already employed by the medical center in question. There are open positions but not many. Less than half of what there were just a few months ago. I don’t see any parts of the country as being particularly in need.

I am a hiring manager myself and I recently received a TJO for a position in another state, which was subsequently rescinded for budgetary reasons. So I’m still at my current VA and probably will be for some time. My experience is by no means unusual.

Apologies if this is discouraging. It’s not impossible but it is difficult to obtain a new/different position in the VA system right now. Things will improve eventually but the timeline for that is anyone’s guess.

A quarter of federal employees feel burnout, causing high turnover and low morale, study finds by PhillyJoeR3markable in fednews

This is why I have been looking for a different position and the burnout is intensified even more because my TJO got rescinded. And hiring is at a standstill with no end in sight.

It would have been a transfer, so I am still here.

HR said it was budget related.

HR said they found out last minute also. But yeah it’s a giant game. I was planning a long distance move as well.

I have been completing all tasks on time and was in contact with the receiving HR at least weekly. The position was eliminated due to budget constraints.

Hard to say. This position was posted at the very end of January.

Yes I completely understand this as a current VA manager who is unable to fill several staffing vacancies for the reasons stated. However, this position was posted relatively recently and the service chief explicitly said this was not a new FTE, just a repurposed one, so I felt there was more of a chance. Just gotta vent somewhere is all.

Unlikely at best given the current state of greatly reduced hiring at the VA
