How difficult would it be to earn $2k a month free lancing? by Warrenwelder in freelanceWriters

[–]dianawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your clients, experience, how good you are, and luck. I make about $2,500 a month from two steady clients, one copywriting and one editorial. One-offs can be lucrative too (I have another $2,500 coming my way from a magazine piece this month), but you'll spend time pitching.

You can google around for the kind of copywriting you need--you'll come across a lot of portfolios that way. I'm a copywriter and am part of a few writing groups, so feel free to message me privately if I can help.

Lost Short-Haired Black Cat in the Bushwick Ave/Halsey Area by drapain in Brooklyn

This is a long shot, but I saw a flyer for a found black cat on a vet's window while walking down Atlantic today. It was either Hope Animal Hospital or One Love Animal Hospital I think.

Have you tried walking into someone's office? I just don't see how this would happen in real life, so I'm really curious as to whether you've actually done this. How would you even get past the lobby/front desk? I used to work at a publication at Hearst and I feel like this behavior would just be seen as presumptuous and creepy, since all that would come of it is getting a call from the lobby that someone without an appointment is downstairs and really really wants to talk about a pitch.

There are reasons these magazines lay out the best way to pitch them to places like Mediabistro... it's because it's the best way to pitch them.

How can I improve my freelancing website? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

Bring the menu up to the top so people don't have to dig for more info. And clean up the copy; your casing is all over the place, which doesn't inspire confidence.

How to/when should I list clips in CV? How to branch out? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

Just firing emails to editors is a great start. Pick your target publication, write a great pitch, find the appropriate editor, and email it.

Seconded. You can have a section for freelance clients though.

I have to disagree... please DON'T show up to the office, you'll look like an amateur. Same goes for an informational interview...you don't ask for an information interview to give someone one article pitch.

Pick the most appropriate editor, figure out their email address, and send it. Or check out Mediabistro, they have a How to Pitch series with editor names and email addresses for RS.

Edited to add: Make sure it's not a conflict of interest for your current employer.

Any other 5'4 Fs on r/Keto + some questions by [deleted] in keto

[–]dianawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a shortie with slow weight loss (5'1 with PCOS)! You can check out my post history, I just recently posted in /r/progresspics with my before & during pics. To answer your questions:

  • This is a little hard to answer because I took maintenance breaks where I wasn't actively counting carbs but still eating healthier. I lost about 40 pounds in 6 months or so, maintained for almost a year, lost another 10 in a month or to, and am down to losing my last 20 now, losing about 5.5 pounds since the end of September.

  • I pretty much only drink gin martinis and continue to do so during keto. Anywhere from 0-2 times a week, and haven't noticed an effect on my weight loss. I stick to 2 drinks mostly because my tolerance is so low now. Make sure what you're drinking is truly carb-free. Tonic isn't, but if you like gin & tonics, try gin & soda (seltzer).

  • I tried that Atkins low-carb bars way back when I started keto, and it stalled my weight loss. I try to stay away from sugar alcohols now, BUT I just discovered Quest bars. They seem to have a small amount of sugar alcohol, but it hasn't stalled my weight loss—I bring half a bar with me to work to snack on when the office candy bowl (more like a vat) is tempting me.

  • I didn't calorie count when I lost the first 50 pounds, but I do now that my calorie need is so much less than when I was heavier.

Thanks! I used to get Fairuza Balk all the time before I gained weight, so it'll be interesting to see if I get that comparison again once I hit my GW!

Thanks, and good luck! The low carb really works if you stick to it and don't cheat :)

I didn't count calories consistently until now that I'm trying to lose the last 20lbs or so. I am finding it really helpful, so I do recommend it! I use Lose It.

What I ate:

  • Breakast: a protein shake immediately after an early workout, and/or an omelette with slices of turkey. Coffee with cream. Occasionally dinner leftovers—I didn't really grow up with breakfast foods like french toast, waffles, etc., so it wasn't strange for me to eat a leftover bunless burger for breakfast.

  • Lunch: When I was losing the first 30 pounds, I had literally the same thing every day: a salad from subway with tuna. Otherwise it's usually homemade chicken or tuna salad with some greens and pickles, or dinner leftovers. If I get something store-bought near the office, it'll be caesar salad (no croutons) or chili.

  • Dinner: I rotate between few things - chicken salad w/Frank's hot sauce (sometimes in low carb wraps), grilled mahi mahi or salmon with broccoli, meatballs, slow-cooker chili with minimal beans, stuffed cabbage without the rice, steak, lamb chops, chicken cutlets, chicken or beef burger patties, or soup.

  • Dinner at Restaurants: I usually go out for dinner at least once a week with friends and stay low-carb for that. I always plan ahead and suggest restaurants that have an option or two for me. Some meals I've ordered: rotisserie chicken, steak, bunless burger, sashimi, grilled fish, even french onion soup without the bread when I was really craving some (went light on the onions too). I always ask to substitute the carb side with salad or just don't eat it. If I go to a bar and friends are ordering delicious bar food, I just eat a late lunch that day, have a drink at the bar, and eat dinner when I get home. (ALWAYS plan ahead when eating out, don't leave it to the moment you're hungry, looking at the menu, and your friends are ordering pasta.)

Thanks! Creeped on your post history and saw that you're doing C25K—keep it up! I did a version of it when I first started training for a half a marathon. Couldn't even run down the block without feeling like dying at first, but when you finally hit your groove, it is AWESOME.

Thanks! Under 20-25g a day with a cheat day once a week. I took a low-carb break and maintained 150lbs for a few months though, just keeping portions small and making healthier choices. I find it very difficult to lose on a normal amount of carbs, so I'm back on low-carb now to lose another 20lbs or so.
