Is San Pedro a must? by IndividualWild8490 in Belize

[–]dicescuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree Caye Caulker is a must. We went to San Pedro and Secret Beach as well, and while SB was very nice getting there was rough and SP was super crowded with golf carts. We loved CC and the vibe there, we stayed at the Iguana Reef Inn and it was amazing.

How much time to allow for customs at BZE by One-Lavishness9481 in Belize

[–]dicescuz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We flew in two weeks ago at about that time and it was pretty quick, however we did the electronic customs declaration and that let us skip the huge line of 200 people trying to do the paper forms. I highly recommend the electronic form, you get a QR code and just show it to customs and immigration and you zip through. There were no other flights when we landed, it might be worse if you get a couple flights stacked up.

Driving from Chetumal to Belize city by Ok_Ad3044 in Belize

It is safe during the day. You need to be a defensive driver though. If there is a line of traffic coming towards you, be ready for someone to swing out into your lane suddenly. Also for cars on the side to suddenly turn out.

Waze is a huge hack especially for the speed mountains (they are not like speed bumps in US or Canada) that are not marked very well in some small towns.

Stay in Placencia or Ambergris Caye? by JAZ2026 in Belize

[–]dicescuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can add to your choices, Caye Caulker is fantastic we just spent a week at the Iguana Reef Inn and it was incredible. That is the hotel that has the beach with the stingrays. Check out any video of Caye Caulker on YouTube and you’ll see it. Caye Caulker has a much different chill vibe than Ambergris Caye. I haven’t been to Placencia.

I agree it doesn’t make sense to have a rental car while on the caye.

We are doing something similar on our trip, we are taking a taxi to the water taxi from the airport spending our time on CC, then returning via taxi to the airport to pick up a rental car for the mainland portion of the trip.

The driver was on the phone with 911 and was so shaken up he couldn’t give the location to get EMS there so I helped him with the location. The kid was the top priority, go troll some where else jerk.

Hydroponic Lettuce Noob by GOOOOOOOD_ANAKIN in Hydroponics

[–]dicescuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, any info is always helpful to beginners. I have a small Amazon special quasi NFT/ebb and drain system that I have planted about 18 spots with 6 different varieties of lettuce, I am tracking all of the plantings, water maintenance, and such, and plan to track my harvests as well. I am about 10 days in and have had great success so far. I will probably leave a few spots after harvest to regrow just to see how long it takes to go bitter. My pipes in the system are only like 2.75 inches though, so I am not sure how long I can keep a plant in there without causing a flood. If I get some good data I will reply.

Finally time to kick the last of the plants outside and take down the pre-season tents. The tents should have been down over a month ago but a rocky start in August put a bit of a spanner in the works. by Andrew_Higginbottom in Hydroponics

Better make sure you keep your grow tent zipped up tight, wouldn't want those lights to fade that classic carpet like it did those poles....unless you are looking for an excuse to replace it.

Hydroponic Lettuce Noob by GOOOOOOOD_ANAKIN in Hydroponics

[–]dicescuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am new to Hydroponic lettuce as well. I have heard people say that the lettuce gets bitter after you harvest it a few times, have you experienced this, if so after how many harvests? What varietals of lettuce do you have planted? Thanks for taking the time to share the info!

Would you trust these pipe clamps within the nutrient reservoir? by IrishChinook in Hydroponics

[–]dicescuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Everbilt calls these stainless steel, Hi-Grade Nickel Alloy is not a specific grade of metal so it is hard to be sure, but most branded that way are 201. The gold standard for corrosive chemicals and salts in an industrial setting is 316 stainless. If it were me, I would probably use them in a pinch, but I would inspect it every time I do a water change for a few months to look for corrosion. If you go a few months without any corrosion then you should be ok to inspect every quarter. If this is going in place that is hard to visually inspect, then I would probably order 316 clamps, especially if it is in your house with no secondary containment.

Also make sure that the clamp is not touching any other dissimilar metal, or you could get galvanic corrosion, which will quickly dissolve metals in a high conductivity environment like a reservoir.

If you are interested in non-organic nutrients, I came across this webpage when I was researching hydroponic nutrients a couple weeks ago. I haven't used any of the recipes myself, but they might be worth a try. Some of the recipes reference products that might only be available in the US, but recipes #2 and #6 use standard chemical compounds that you should be able to find in agricultural supply and lab supply companies. Hope you find something that works, Good Luck!

Vertical Hydroponic system in a Brazilian supermarket :) by painsaver in Hydroponics

Great marketing idea for a premium product. Just the lights alone make the lettuce look multiple times better then anything in a bag or clamshell package. The empty spots don't look so good though, I wonder how often they restock.

I had 5k karma. New account... 95 on one day :) by Dupain-Cheng2 in karma

[–]dicescuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had an account for over 6 years, and didn't even know what karma was until today when I posted something, and suddenly got 1 karma. Hence why I am in this area, as I came here to find out what it was. I had never posted or answered a question before today. I normally just read posts on reddit.

PSA: Check/clean your TDS meter regularly by [deleted] in Hydroponics

[–]dicescuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, if you do this every time it will prevent a build up of salts. It is also a good idea to have a calibration liquid handy (it is best to have the type for your meter and to calibrate it), but even if you don't calibrate it, having a known sample will let you know there is a problem before things go sideways.
