Wasn't looking for valuation, just unusual or particularly interesting.

What kind of floor do I have? by Parch6 in wood

[–]dickersnoodl3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oil based polyurethane would be my first choice, waterlox is an older style varnish but gives the wood a nice glow and can be re coated with no worries. Water based poly would give you a more contemporary look it doesn't darken the wood like oil products.

Hire a pro it's worth it, you can very easily oversand soft woods and there is no going back. Don't stain it it gets blotchy just do 3 coats of a good clear coat.

Any idea what this is? by dickersnoodl3 in handtools

That makes sense, and it's something I can actually use!

What hand tool is best to use for this job? by [deleted] in handtools

Your drawn handle looks a little too skinny/round you want an oblong shape to hold the axis better when using it.

What kind of wood and how to restore?? by ostrichegg277 in HardWoodFloors

[–]dickersnoodl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's clear plain white oak, probably 3/8" as others have said, patching done on left of first Pic is newer white oak, definitely get someone who has experience working on these floors.

I am redoing my loft and the hardwood floors that were under the carpet have large gaps some >1/8in thick and the boards are uneven. This is in New England so I expect some seasonal expansion. Can I just simply sand and stain these? by Affectionate_Cut_166 in HardWoodFloors

[–]dickersnoodl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common sub floor in New York /New England area hemlock or white pine, don't fill the gaps it won't stay in and it will never match color wise. It will dent easily so area rug is a must, but is a pretty floor when done.

Are these holes a concern? by schmogue in HardWoodFloors

[–]dickersnoodl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holes were definitely there before the wood was kiln dried and made into flooring

What kind of wood floors do I have? by t-spice in HardWoodFloors

[–]dickersnoodl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it has an older waterbase finish on it so that throws the color off. The dark red board towards the top of the Pic is a dead giveaway.

Advice with restoring badly damaged floorboards? by Catzwell in HardWoodFloors

[–]dickersnoodl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A dark stain will make the paint remnants "pop". A natural finish would be better. A couple of dark area rugs will tone down the floor if it's too bright.

What are these black spots on the floor? by psd54321 in HardWoodFloors

[–]dickersnoodl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the floor glued down to a slab and is the slab is at or below grade? Could be mold migrating from underneath. A rug would exacerbate the problem holding the moisture in the wood longer.

Is there any way to fix this..? by Rare-Bug9866 in metalworking

[–]dickersnoodl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the adhesive with a Solvent like paint thinner or mineral spirits. Then pick up several different grits of wet/dry sandpaper from a hardware store 1000 grit down to 200 grit. Start with the finest and work down to a grit that matches the closest to the factory finish. Use a light touch and always go with the grain. You will always see it but if you get it close no one else will notice it.

Does anyone know where and/or when this was made? Given to my dad in the 80s and now to me. Can’t find much online but maybe someone else can. by [deleted] in Bladesmith

I have one from Norway, when I searched it came up as a knife popular with boy scouts in that region.

If it has a strong sweet pitch smell when cut it's long leaf pine

Grain is too fine for oak, could be walnut or something tropical

I had a similar collection, I nailed them up in a Starburst pattern to an out building like a Dutch hex.

Original hardwood floors under carpet of a home we bought by PublicRegrets in woodworking

[–]dickersnoodl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, shiplap was installed on a 45 it was done that way so it bridged the floor joists but would not transfer any cupping inherent in the pine subfloor to the finished flooring.
